of the central aesthetic struggles of twentieth-century poetry in English, the attempt to resolve the tension between closed and open forms. Koch admired the poems of William Carlos Williams for being so “odd and exciting;” they “catch the music of a man alive in his time.” Koch’s poems aspire to do the same, and more often than not they achieve that sound. It’s the sound of a man happy to be alive despite the world’s terrors, and who is awake to that feeling. I don’t think readers of poetry will ever tire of it; I suspect it will continue to convey something real about their own experience. It’s the sound of a man reaching into history without embarrassment or sense of piety, to draw forth whatever elements of poetic form are best suited to his occasions—from tight rhyming stanzas, to heroic couplets, to long and short free verse lines, to experimental serial structures—cheerfully ripping out the lining of yesterday’s attitudes and shaking off the lint of a persistent yet tired idiom. The spirit of poetry lives in Koch’s work, but we return to the work because it is alive with the spirit of Koch himself. If he started to write his first real poems by thwarting the expectations of literary convention in 1952, he continued to write into the twenty-first century by escaping the expectations of New York School poetics, in its tertiary generation. I discovered Koch’s work late, in the mid-nineties, with the poem “One Train May Hide Another,” and the book from which it takes its name; finding the single volumes that preceded it, many of them out of print, was no small discovery. -

30-05-2008, Primavera Sound Festival, Barcelona 3rd Bridge Helix From Experimental Punk to Ancient Chinese Music & Universal Physical Laws of Consonance This article is a written excerpt of my lecture I gave at the Primavera Sound Festival in Barcelona about my self built musical instruments. I explained what kind of instruments I make, why I make them and for which bands. I showed the audience my own copies and played a little on those instruments. Additionally I gave a deeper explanation about one particular instrument I have created, the Moodswinger. After finishing this instrument I rediscovered this instrument is not only a musical instrument, but also a educational measurement instrument which shows a universal system of consonant values based on simple physical laws. I discovered all musical scaling systems all over the world are derived from this basical system, inclusive the worst inharmonic deviated tuning system of all these variations, our Western 12-tone logaritmic equal tempered scale. - Yuri Landman The Beginning I bought my first guitar and bass guitar when I was 18. I always had a fascination for direct and simple punk rock structures instead of highly practised virtuose guitar playing used in symphonic rock and hard rock. In line of this estethical rule I refused to take traditional guitar lessons from a jazz or blues guitar teacher. I took notice of some chords and know where to put my fingers for a C7 or minor D-chord, but I have never practised long enough to play them well. I cannot even play Nirvana’s Polly properly for instance. -

A Review of Nate Logan’s Inside the Golden Days of Missing You (Magic Helicopter Press, 2018) Jessie Janeshek The Midwest is a weird place. I say this as a West Virginian, remembering the first time I traveled far enough west in Ohio to realize what flat land really looked like. Since then, having spent time in Nebraska and Missouri, I can say that the Midwest conjures a wonderful surreality and an eerie sense of possibility, a feeling that you just don’t get surrounded by hills. On the plains you just keep looking. It’s hard to judge time or space. How far off is that black cloud? How far off is that farmhouse? Funnel clouds, funnel cakes…anything can happen out there. The poems in Nate Logan’s debut collection Inside the Golden Days of Missing You capture this weirdness. As Logan writes in “Bad Execution,” “Some big questions approach a person/strolling through a cornfield…” In “We’re an American Band,” the ten-part, penultimate poem of the book, “I high-five each cornstalk as I slip/into the night’s paint sample. Folding/in half is the first magic trick I learned/and so Midwestern…” But Logan’s world is also broader than that. Poems move through California, the Great Salt Lake, Marfa, Pennsylvania, New Hampshire, the Caribbean, and an episode of “Guantanamo Baywatch” and, in pieces like “The River Nate” and “Lumbering” (in which “I don’t feel/like a haunted lumberyard tonight”), they use physical geography to explore speakers’ emotional terrains. The work is diverse in form, ranging from prose poems to shorter stanza-ed poems to longer poems in parts to “Slot Machine,” a three-columned poem that should be gimmicky but isn’t. -

At that point Alice Notley was finding New York less amenable and was keen to go somewhere else. Livingston 1 Diane DiPrima’s Search for a Familiar Truth The image of Diane DiPrima∗ sitting on her bed in a New York flat, eyes cast down, is emblematic of the Beat movement. DiPrima sought to characterize her gender without any constraints or stereotypes, which was no simple task during the 1950s and 1960s. Many of the other Beats, who were predominately male, wrote and practiced varying degrees of misogyny, while DiPrima resisted with her characteristic biting wit. In the early days of her writing (beginning when she was only thirteen), she wrote about political, social, and environmental issues, aligning herself with Timothy Leary’s LSD Experiment in 1966 and later with the Black Panthers. But in the latter half of her life, she shifted focus and mostly wrote of her family and the politics contained therein. Her intention was to find stable ground within her familial community, for in her youth and during the height of the Beat movement, she found greater permanence in the many characters, men and women, who waltzed in and out of her many flats. -
