    Buffalo Sabres Daily Press Clips March 18, 2014 Sabres-Flames Preview Associated Press March 17, 2014 Jhonas Enroth will not join the Buffalo Sabres on their five-game road swing, and with backup Michal Neuvirth also injured, the league's worst team will likely begin its trip with a No. 1 goaltender who has 22 minutes of NHL game experience under his belt. Nathan Lieuwen will probably make his first career start Tuesday night when the Sabres take on the Calgary Flames. Enroth sustained a lower-body injury in Sunday's 2-0 loss to Montreal. ''He's going to get further evaluation and stay behind,'' coach Ted Nolan said Monday. ''Right now it looks at least a little bit better today than it did yesterday.'' After the Sabres (19-41-8) flew out of Buffalo on Monday, Enroth posted on his Twitter account a photo of his right leg in an immobilizing device and wrote, ''For the next couple weeks ... " Lieuwen stopped all 10 shots he faced in his NHL debut Sunday after being called up from AHL Rochester earlier in the day. Buffalo also called up Matt Hackett from Rochester on Monday to back up Lieuwen. Hackett, a former third-round draft pick, played 13 games with Minnesota from 2011-13 before the Sabres traded for him last April 3. Nolan said Neuvirth will travel with the Sabres, but his status for Tuesday is up in the air. Neuvirth has missed two games with a lower-body injury, but was able to work out on the ice Monday.

Signing Dano could be indicator BY KEN WIEBE, WINNIPEG SUN There are still several moving parts and a few issues left to uncover or resolve, but the expansion plans for the Winnipeg Jets are coming into focus. While it's still unclear whether the Jets asked veteran defenceman Toby Enstrom to waive his no-movement clause before Monday's deadline, you'd have to think the conversation took place. When Jets GM Kevin Cheveldayoff was asked directly about the topic of no-movement clauses at his year-end address, he said all options would be explored. Officially, the Jets won't be commenting on the process until after the protected lists are revealed on Sunday morning. Based on experience, one shouldn't expect too much detail to be given, even after the expansion draft picks are made public. It's a sensitive subject and one of the biggest reasons the NHL GM's didn't want the lists to be made public. Yes, it's possible the Jets could buy out the final year of Enstrom's $5.75 million contract, but that appears to be the most unlikely result. The Jets haven't bought out a player since the franchise relocated and it's hard to imagine Enstrom would be the first, especially since they still value his services when healthy. Buying him out would be both a costly proposition and leave a void on the left side of the defence depth chart.

To overcome the shortcomings of simple metrics for evalu- ating player performance, recent works have introduced more advanced metrics that take into account the context of the players' actions and per- form look-ahead. However, as ice hockey is a team sport, knowing about individual ratings is not enough and coaches want to identify players that play particularly well together. In this paper we therefore extend earlier work for evaluating the performance of players to the related problem of evaluating the performance of player pairs. We experiment with data from seven NHL seasons, discuss the top pairs, and present analyses and insights based on both the absolute and relative ice time together. Keywords: Sports analytics · Data mining · Player valuation. 1 Introduction In the field of sports analytics, many works focus on evaluating the performance of players. A commonly used method to do this is to attribute values to the different actions that players perform and sum up these values every time a player performs these actions. These summary statistics can be computed over, for instance, games or seasons. In ice hockey, common summary metrics include the number of goals, assists, points (assists + goals) and the plus-minus statistics (+/-), in which 1 is added when the player is on the ice when the player's team scores (during even strength play) and 1 is subtracted when the opposing team scores (during even strength). More advanced measures are, for instance, Corsi and Fenwick1. However, these metrics do not capture the context of player actions and the impact they have on the outcome of later actions.

The hypothesis is that NHL players have their peak performance at age 27, which indicates that long-term contracts that exceed this age create inefficiency. The study will examine player productivity by taking 30 NHL players and evaluating their performance in the years leading up to age 27 as well as years that follow. Performance measures include average point production and the highest average ice-time per game. The study will also use two OLS (Ordinary Least Squares) regressions where the dependent variables are average time on ice per game and capital hit, both good indicators of how valuable a player is to his team, as well as several statistical independent variables such as points, games played and most importantly age. By gaining knowledge of peak performance, NHL organizations could better manage their teams by limiting long-term contracts to players and as a result lessen the inefficiency that exists in the market. Besides my column in The Hockey News’ Ultimate Pool Guide, and my contributions to this year’s Score Forecaster (fifth year doing each), I put an ad in McKeen’s. That covers the big three hockey pool magazines and you should have at least one of them as part of your draft prep. The other thing you need, of course, is this Guide right here. It is not only updated throughout the summer, but I also make sure that the features/tidbits found in here are unique. I know what’s in the print mags and I have always tried to set this Guide apart from them. Once again, this is an automatic download – just pick it up in your downloads section. Look for one or two updates in August, then one or two updates between September 1st and 14th. After that, when training camp is in full swing, I will be updating every two or three days right into October.
