Significance - Bimetallism, as an economic and political issue, gained perhaps its greatest fame during the Presidential campaign of 1896, under the banner of William Jennincs Bryan. Although nryan was defeated on his free platform, bimetallism refused to die, reappearin3 as a solution to financial crises for years following that historic campaign. Such a crisis was the depression of 1929 and aany men of national prominence began to consider bimetallism as an aid to financial recovery.

The papero of Frank J. Cannon deal with this period of crisis and reflect the vigor of the advocates in their fight for the remonetization of silver. Cannon, as President of the Bimetallic Association and Chairman of the International Silver Cotmnission, corresponded t-Tith senators and governors throughout the West in his efforts to win converts to the cause. His papers s~an the years from 1929-33, and although they relate most directly to the Bimetallic Association, they help to tell the story of the many interpretations of, objections to, and personalities linked uith bimetallism during the depression.

Provenance - The Frank J. Cannon collection was a gift of Miss Caroline Evans, as noted in The Colorado Magazine, XXI (January, 1944), 38. This collection consists of approximately 2,050 pieces, mainly correspondence, in coming and outgoing, manuscripts by Cannon and others, printed resolutions, news releases and statements to the press, notes, and publications pertaining to Cannon's support of bimetallism and his t·7ork with the Bimetallic Association in the 1920's and 1930's.
