Welcome to Greenhill House

I would like to introduce you to Greenhill House. I hope this pack answers many of your questions, and I would be delighted to welcome you to visit us to find out more. It’s an exciting time for all the staff and residents of Greenhill House, as the home has recently been redeveloped and is now a modern, purpose-built care home, with spacious, bright rooms, en-suite bathrooms and a dedicated dementia wing. Jenny Futcher, Home Manager

Once the smallest home in the Care Group, Greenhill House has been redeveloped into a spacious and modern purpose-built home which comprises 20 residential bedrooms, a dementia wing for 16 residents and care suites. The care home has been kept purposefully small, and on a domestic scale. The design is such that the majority of the bedrooms are on the upper floor and the living spaces are on the ground floor, making it more familiar for people who are used to living in two-storey houses. The bedrooms are at least 20m square, and include a shower en suite. There is a newly fitted commercial kitchen and laundry room which provide services across the development. There is a separate coffee lounge (not attached to the residential area or the dementia wing) which can be used by care home residents, family members and visitors and the wider community. The staff are always friendly, helpful and really care for the people who live at Greenhill. Greenhill has a mixture of old and new staff and that makes it exceptional in my eyes. You have the ethic of the old ways and what is good and [also] brought new ideas to allow for change but in a special way in which everyone is involved and is happy with their choices. I think that you are very caring and make everything you do personal to the individual and their families. I also feel part of Greenhill as do my family. We would not want Mum to be anywhere else. Please don’t stop the magic.

Features • The home has been designed with the utmost sensitivity to the local environment and built sympathetically to blend into its surroundings. The modern development boasts energy saving technology and efficiency exceeding the strict requirements of building control. • We have a hairdresser’s salon located in the home for the use of all residents. • Greenhill House is also fitted with the Eclipse Nursecall System. This is one of the most advanced nursecall systems available, and is specifically designed for people with dementia. In the evenings, the system senses if a resident gets out of bed and will sound an alarm if they are out of bed for more than a preset time. This time can be tailored to individual needs. • There is also a hotel-style telephony system linked to each room. Serving delicious and nutritious meals Greenhill House benefits from its own kitchen and catering staff, with meals prepared daily on-site, to suit a wide range of dietary requirements. There are varied menus, ensuring plentiful choices for residents. These are served in the dining room, although residents may choose to have meals in their room if they prefer. Keeping active Greenhill House has an activities co-ordinator who organises a variety of activities for residents to take part in. We have IT facilities available for all to use including Wi-Fi and Skype, which can be used to maintain contact with friends and relatives that may not live locally. Greenhill House is located in the friendly village of Cheddar. A bit of history Cheddar is a large village in Somerset, located on the edge of the Mendip Hills. Lending its name to the famous Cheddar cheese which is still made today, the village is also well-known for its natural feature, Cheddar Gorge, the largest gorge in the UK. An important site in Roman and Saxon times, Cheddar has a long history. The name Cheddar is believed to originate from the Old English word ‘ceodor’, meaning deep dark cavity or pouch. Cheddar was listed in the Domesday Book of 1086 AD as Ceder, meaning ‘Shear Water’ and in 1130 AD, Cheddar Gorge was recognised as one of the ‘Four wonders of England’. The local school, Kings of Wessex , is built on the site of an Anglo-Saxon palace, and the 14th century ruins of the chapel of St Columbanus can still be seen. Cheddar is now a major tourist destination.
