Issue no. 98 - End of Summer Term July 2011 The Kings’ Messenger

Kings is an ! One year after the Secretary of State for Education invited the school to apply to become one of the Government’s new-style Academies, we finally received official confirmation that Kings would convert to an Academy on 1 June 2011.

You will be aware that we had had initially planned to become an Academy on 1 September 2010, but lengthy delays caused by the Church of England meant that this was not possible.

As The Kings of Wessex Academy, we are now self-managing, and independent of Local Authority, and receive funding directly from Central Government. The major benefits of Academy Status are greater control over the academy budget to achieve the best for our students, reduced bureaucracy, with increased funding to improve education and focus on teaching and learning both here at Kings, and in the wider community.

We will continue to serve the needs of all students, and maintain the existing admission criteria with no selection based on ability. The Academy is run by an Academy Trust, composed of our existing Governing Body, and all staff will continue to be employed by the Academy Trust; with continued representation by parents and members of the community.

We are also committed to our special ethos and values, including status as a Church of England School and the strong partnership with Cheddar Valley Schools. Kings Fitness and Leisure will continue to be owned and operated by the Academy. So - here’s looking to the future as The Kings of Wessex Academy...! Head’s-Up from Mr Richardson Headteacher, The Kings of Wessex Academy

Dear Parents, I am delighted to bring you this end of Summer Term 2011 report – the first, in our official capacity as The Kings of Wessex Academy!

I am sure, like you, I could never have foreseen the long drawn-out process a year ago when the Secretary for State invited us to apply to become one of the Government’s new-style Academies. But, I am confident that this is a positive step as we build on our success as an Outstanding School to provide a world class education for all our young people.

It has of course been business as usual with this Summer Term inevitably the Season of Exams. This is the culmination of Year 11 Mentoring Plus meetings, lunchtime and after school catch-up sessions, the Easter Revision programme, exam briefings, Controlled Assessments and of course - revision, revision, revision! I thank all our staff and Mentors for their constant and conscientious work encouraging students to achieve their very best. You will know that we have high standards here at Kings and we believe passionately academic success is an important foundation in preparing for our young people for the future.

A big practical thank you also to the Exams Office led by Assistant Headteacher Mr Hughes for their meticulous management of this enormous exercise, our team of External Invigilators and of course, our Caretakers who all play their part in the smooth running of the exams. We can do no more now but await the results in August!

After all the hard work - it was time to celebrate. The Year 11 Celebration Assembly was held on Monday 20 June 2011 organised by Year 11 Leader Eric Holdsworth and Acting Year 11 Leader Adrian Targett, along with a team of enthusiastic super students. They began the afternoon with a barbeque, before a packed programme of readings, singing, music – sharing many special memories of their three years here at Kings. The following Tuesday 28 June 2011 they donned their party frocks and DJ’s for their Prom at The Webbington Hotel in Loxton It seemed as though they had grown up overnight! See the photos shortly...

Meanwhile, we held a very special Year 13 Leavers’ Assembly and barbecue on Friday 27 May 2011 before they left Kings for the last time to go on exam leave. And not to be out-done for their do, the Senior Student Team organised their Prom on the pier at Weston-super-Mare on Friday 1 July 2011.

Continuing the educational cycle, the new Year 9 Team headed by Year Leader Mrs Lowis is working to ensure a smooth transition for our Year 9 September intake students. We were delighted to welcome our new-Year 9-to-be students for Transfer Day on Tuesday 5 July 2011, and it was great to see around with their new Tutors.

Moving upwards, we held our Sixth Form Induction Day on Wednesday 29 June 2011, when students spent a day with us enjoying taster lessons in their chosen ‘A' Level subjects, and other Sixth Form privileges – not least, not wearing uniform! conference to prepare for Work Experience Week at the beginning of July. Many students tell me they found this beneficial in opening their eyes to possible careers, and striving to fulfil their future ambitions. Year 9 students had their turn to be good citizens in the PSHE/Citizenship Conference.

Governors were in Subject Teams for their Summer Term Day in June, which also coincided with the Cheddar Churches Tent Event held here on our field. I know Governors appreciate this contact time with staff and students to inform their decisions and direction for Kings, and I thank them.

After the various rounds of the Maths Challenge through the year, we were left with three year 9 students still in the competition. Scott Jenkins and Andrew Rose were sitting the Cayley Paper of the British Mathematical Olympiad and Alex Beretvas the Grey Kangaroo paper. Scott and Andrew achieved certificates of merit at this level. All three students have achieved at a very high level and we look forward to further achievements later in their Mathematical careers.

A Reminder to current Year 9 students: You will be sitting the “real” Science GCSE exams in January of Year 10. These are going to be very important as the Exam Board no longer allows umpteen re-sits! So, be prepared - and revise, revise, revise!

Mrs B Riddick, Subject Leader for Science/Chemistry At the time of writing the highlight of the term’s activities has yet to happen - the annual Year 9 trip to the Eden Project.

Speak to Frau Rebello if you are interested in going on the German trip! Design Technology Week

We held our annual Design Technology Week in June with a wealth of exciting events for our dynamic young designers of the future.

Year 9 students enjoyed a fun-packed day at Legoland in Windsor. For the first rainy hour students enjoyed the opportunity to try the water-based rides at the theme-park. The afternoon turned sunny, and the wet clothes soon dried. The submarine ride through the Lego Atlantis area was very well remarked on, due to the variety of brightly coloured fish that lived there - including a manta-ray! The only major complaint of the day was 'The grass isn't made of Lego!' Alastair Bevan Campbell, Kings and Queens News Team

Year 10 Product Design students visited Alton Towers, and after exploring the park designed for homework a new ride in leaflet format.

The charity Practical Action launched a sustainable design competition for Technology students completed by our Year 9 students. The top seven entries were sent off to the charity with Alex Beretvas highly commended for his traffic-saving bus idea. His final design is being showcased on the Practical Action website (www.practicalaction.org).

During Technology Week, all Year 9 students had opportunity to enter the Fab – Design a Den competition to design a new bedroom. The prize is to have their bedroom design made into a reality. Recent MEng Graduate from Exeter University Matthew Bugler worked with two Year 9 classes and helped launch the competition, and discussed Engineering as a career. (see here in the photo below).

Year 10 Food Technology students participating in the Master Chef Competition spent a cooking afternoon preparing their two courses for judges Ms Riddick and Mr Friend. The winning chef was Laura Botsford (first left) for her yummy asparagus spaghetti and chocolate fondant, who received a set of professional pastry cutters and a certificate.

Well done to Daniel Mehlig who has successfully gained an Arkwright Scholarship. This year there were 904 applicants, 470 candidates interviewed and 300 scholarships awarded. Both our Technology Department and Daniel will receive a scholarship for his two years in the Sixth Form.

Cheddar Valley First Schools collaborated with Fairlands Middle School to run a “Squashed Tomato Challenge Day” when students worked in school teams to design the most innovative and practical transportation system for a packet of tomatoes to travel down a hillside. After much designing, discussing and testing the schools faced each other in the final experiment and Lympsham First School were the winners for their imaginative pulley design. Each student received a certificate and squashed tomato key-ring manufactured on our laser cutter. By Miss G Chapman Students make money! This year’s Big Pitch winners will present their final report to members of the Mendip Rotary Club on Thursday 14 July 2011. Raising their own capital initially, Alex Beretvas and Scott Jenkins decided to set up their own business „Cakes of Wessex‟ and have produced cakes and cookies during the year, adjusting their products effectively to meet the needs of different markets.

To begin with the two bakers produced stock to sell at Cheddar car boot, aiming for the Christmas market at the end of December. Joined by Jack Hughes, a third Company Director, they sold well - developing their customer service skills as they went along. Alex emerged as a very confident seller on the day, no customer left without buying at least two items! A successful morning saw all of their stock go.

They next decided to focus their efforts on making to order, but not before exploiting the Year 9 Open Evening in February to increase their sales. Effective organisation, good customer service and excellent teamwork were all essential to get their order business of the ground. Good initial interest in their products, including attractive labels and a clearly laid-out order form helped boost sales and ensure the process ran smoothly.

Our congratulations to Alex and Scott, who have sustained their business over the year and generated a good profit!

“The Chocolate Brothers”: Tom Powell and George Willis were also involved in the Big Pitch scheme. Credit must first go to Tom and George for thinking up one of the best business names we have had on the scheme in recent years. The chocolatiers produced hand-made chocolates using moulds, bagged them up attractively and successfully tempted members of the Mendip Rotary Club to purchase their quality products. Well done also to Tom and George!

The Big Pitch competition will start again for Year 9 in September. The Mendip Rotary Club provide each team with a Business Mentor, and students learn about skills and qualities needed to run a business. If any Year 9’s are interested in finding out more, Now, talking of chocolate... please come and see Mr Lee or Mrs Wilson in the AS Level Business Studies students went on a Business Studies Department at the start of September.

Chocolate Factory Trip. There‟s the chance to make a profit - and keep it!

As we walked towards the building, the smell of fresh chocolate was leading the way...Following our noses we reached the entrance, all very excited for all the free chocolate ahead! Obviously we hadn’t just visited the chocolate factory for the endless amounts and the coco bean ride - we were there to learn also.

We met with the Manager in charge of Educational visits who gave us an insightful talk about the Kraft/Cadbury merger and the product portfolio of this global company. We discovered which advertising methods worked best, and realised the popularity of the famous Gorilla advert and also the struggle that they faced whilst introducing a new product with a ‘stripes or spots’ campaign.

Funnily enough - our host was a huge fan of Cheddar Gorge and the goats in the hills!

After watching a presentation filled with chocolate, our mouths were watering - which made the tour even better.

Firstly, we were handed two chocolate bars to eat as we were educated on the history of Cadbury, which was very interesting, as we could see that even years back, Mr Cadbury had to really think about his marketing, and most likely had a corporate aim.

As we entered the next room, rather apprehensively, the doors were filled with signs warning that people with medical conditions; or people who can’t deal with abrupt movement should sit on the back rows. Obviously the whole class filled the front rows, and we were shook like coco beans which was hilarious (although probably not a good idea after over-indulging on Crunchy and Curly-Wurly bars!). We were in a magical world where chocolate supplies were limitless – with a chocolate bar at every door we entered.

The next show was how chocolate was made years ago It would take up to 12 hours for the chocolate to cool - a contrast to today’s technology. Finally, we ended up on the coco bean ride. This wasn’t necessarily ‘thrilling’, but everyone had the best time. We may have been a little too old to watch the baby coco beans guide us through coco bean land, but we loved every minute.

By the time we got to the shop at the end, most people felt too ill to buy any chocolate, but had to seize the opportunity of the biggest bars of Cadbury ever, so we all filed out with our bags of chocolate treats.

Seeing how a real factory functioned, with the hierarchy of employees and the aims and objectives for a real business (rather than a class case study) was fascinating. It has to be said, the funniest part was when we sneaked into the ages 5-14 playing area and let loose.

So, overall, the day was a fantastic introduction to A2 Level Marketing, with a delicious and memorable theme. By Amy Nicol (Kings and Queens News Team)

The Art of Communication in the 21st Century Here at Kings, we take pride in communicating with our parents and guardians, and strive to improve the way we correspond. In the Headteacher’s September mailing to parents, we thank you in advance for completing and returning the data collection sheet, including your up-to-date email contact address. Merci Beaucoup and Vielen Dank!

The Languages Department are very grateful to the PTA for their generous donation to buy a fantastic set of high quality digital headphones. The sets have already been used by some of our GCSE classes in preparation for their Controlled Speaking Assessments. For the Teachers, it has been wonderful to conduct a lesson in the dedicated ICT suite with students listening attentively to the phrases!

The durability and sound quality is by far superior to our previous headphones and their use will be twofold. GCSE and AS/A2 Level Language students will benefit enormously from developing their listening skills by accessing interactive aural websites and sound files for past listening exams with more success.

Also, many of students can feel very self-conscious having to speak out in class and this facility takes them out of the spotlight and allows them to record themselves and assess their own progress at their own speed. Students will be able to improve their own pronunciation and intonation by listening to authentic speakers and by using the recording system with much greater success. Given the nature of the Controlled Assessments for speaking at GCSE and the increased number of students studying Languages following the introduction of the English Baccalaureate, this is a valuable Teaching and Learning resource.

So, on behalf of our Languages students: “Un grand merci” and “Vielen Dank” to the PTA! By Frau Rebello, Subject Leader for Languages

Back on the Battlefields

At the start of this half term, Year 9 Historians followed in the footsteps of World War I British soldiers on a poignant visit to the Battlefields of Belgium.

Aptly, the group visited Cheddar Villa, a small British cemetery and were fascinated by the contrast in styles of remembrance at Langemark, a German cemetery. Students also visited Tyne Cot cemetery with 11,000 soldiers’ graves, and the names of many thousands whose bodies have never been found.

Equipped with a key-card representing the identity of a person from WW1, students toured Ypres' In Flanders Field Museum, reviewing books, photos, front maps, newspapers, personal documents, posters - as well as audiovisual material and shadow battle archives.

Students were overwhelmed by the huge Canadian memorial at Vimy Ridge, and toured the underground tunnels used by soldiers during the war to fight around Vimy. A moving moment was walking in the trenches and the view of no-man's land. In the evening in Ypres, the group experienced the remembrance ceremony at the Menin Gate where the Last Post is sounded and wreaths laid. This has been a daily ceremony since 1928, when the roads are closed every night at 8pm, and even continued in secret during World War II as a sign of remembrance and respect for the British defence of Ypres throughout WW1.

Finally, on an edible note, the students enjoyed a cultural visit to a real Belgium chocolate shop where they learned about the art of Belgian chocolate, with opportunities for tasting and souvenirs to take home.

By Mrs F Shorrock, Subject Leader for History “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” – A Review by Jude Owens (Head’s PA)

The moon was out. Mendelssohn’s Overture was stirring. The scene was set.

This half term, our Year 9 thespians gave a hearty and happy performance of Shakespeare’s popular comedy “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” in the Kings Theatre.

The play opened with Duke of Athens, Theseus (Harry Baker), and Queen of the Amazons, Hippolyta’s (Ellie Voice) making marriage plans. Love is in the air. And on this midsummer’s night we soon discover love is also in the forest and in Fairyland - kingdom of Oberon (Tom Cooksey) and Titania (Jo Hill).

Oberon's head mischief-maker Puck - impeccably impish in green t-shirt and pointy ears, with sparkly green eye-shadow to match - runs wild with a magic flower, prompting hapless mortals to fall in love with the first being they spy upon waking. In Titania’s case - a donkey. That’s right. A magical disguise for weaver Bottom, played ingenuously - yet ingeniously - by Amy Clegg. Cue: a recipe for love disaster. On stage for most of the proceedings, with a fair share of smart soliloquies, Lilli Helps’ Puck delivers his lines with playful naughtiness: “Lord, what fools these mortals be!” True perhaps; but a teasing irony when Puck is dabbling with magic...

Comedy is aplenty and a delight. The audience kept up with love antics between young Athenian lovers Demetrius (Josh Daly), Lysander (Tom Hope-Stone Bell), Hermia (Sarah Appleby) and Helena (Ella Jameson) who squabbled in love, tripped-up in love, then fell in love – before, in true Shakespearean fashion, love found a way in the end for a triple wedding. After all, “The course of true love never did run smooth...”

The Fall-Out Scene between doting Lysander and Demetrious and heroines Helena and Hermia is well acted with some tough love lines delivered in rhyming couplets. As if Shakespearean dialogue is not tricky enough to enunciate. In the Knives Drawn Scene, the quartet skilfully threw their voices around the theatre, recreating the shadowy forest.

In ethereal contrast, Titania’s fairies in flowery dresses are as beautiful as their names - Peaseblossom (Jade Skyrme), Mustardseed (Katie Prior), Cobweb (Megan Kidner) and Moth (Rachel Perry) – dreamily dancing to Tchaikovsky’s Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy. Asleep on stage, Titania furthers the fantasy feel of these “moonlight revels”.

The Athenian amateur actors led by Ellie Dunlop’s precise Peter Quince - complete with beard and artiste articulation - performed their play (within a play) at the wedding. The audience relished these ladies dressed as lads with running commentary, lovers kissing through a makeshift human wall, and roaring lion - before the melodramatic death scene by aspiring actor Bottom.

But as Mendelssohn beckoned the dawn ending this midsummer night’s fun and frolics, the audience all wondered was it really only a dream...?

This charming and comical production was directed by Year 12 student Chloe Kitching, ably assisted by Backstage Crew, Subject Leader and Teacher of Drama Simon Shorrock and Tess Banham, and Kayleigh Jade West and Chelsie Bailey and Patrick Smith.

‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’ is our 2012 academy production, with performances on Wednesday 8 to Friday 10 February 2012 involving students from Years 10-13. Auditions are taking place before the end of term for Years 10, 11 and 13 with the new Year 12 auditioning on their return in September. If you missed the auditions and would like to be involved in performing, then please see Subject Leader for Drama Mr Shorrock for further details. Please note there is some singing involved, but not for all cast members. If you are interested in working backstage, this team will be put together later when we will ask you to come forward.

In the Autumn Term, the Drama Department will be running trips to see ‘The Wild Bride’ by Kneehigh Theatre at the Old Vic in Bristol and ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ by Filter Theatre Company at the Tobacco Factory in Bristol.

Learning Resource Centre Wisdom...

Opening Times: Don’t forget - the LRC is open from 8.15am on Tuesday to Friday mornings for you to finish off any work, use the computers/ printers, or even read the papers or a book.

New Books: We have been updating our fiction stock this year, and regulars to the LRC will have seen a lot of new books on display. If there is anything you would like to read, but can’t find it, come and talk to the Librarians, if we haven’t got it, we will usually order it, and make sure you get it before anyone else.

Student Librarians: We are seeking student librarians to work at lunchtimes for one session a week. If you want to know more, come and talk to the Librarian.

Magazines: The LRC has acquired a new magazine display stand, and some new magazines, “Kingpin” – for those of you that skateboard, “Stuff” full of new gadgets and gizmo’s. But, if you would like to see something different than our current selection, come and tell me, and I will see what we can do.

Box tops for books: We are still collecting tokens from the top of cereal packets. You can bring them to the LRC, and either give them to the Librarian, or put them in the box on the counter.

Student Reading Group: The Reading Group has had a good year, reading through a selection of books, including Jason Wallace’s “Out of Shadows”; the books nominated for the Carnegie Award; and the shortlist for the Somerset Fiction Award. Our favourite matched the judges!

Bath Festival of Children’s Literature: Every year we take a group to one or two events. This year there is a choice of Horrible Histories; Eoin Colfer; Celia Rees and Mary Hooper; Angie Sage; David Almond, Melvin Burgess and Meg Rosoff; Darren Shan and Charlie Higson; and Meet Mackenzie Crook. Please see me if you are interested.

Reading Lunchtimes: We are holding reading lunchtimes on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, to encourage students to view new books acquired in the LRC. Overall, we feel it has been a success, as more books have been taken out. Research has shown that students who read a book a week, will do better in exams than those who don’t read.

Ben Attwood 10LD was selected to represent the West of England Judo Squad at this year’s National Teams event at Sheffield Arena, where he rubbed shoulders with an Olympian Team mate Tom Reed! At the start of the competition the UK was split into nine regions and divided up into pools, qualifying as runners-up in their pool, the West had the hard task of competing against Scotland. After a remarkable performance they defeated Scotland and progressed to the semi-finals, but were beaten by The Midlands – the overall winners. Ben and his team won a bronze medal at the National Team Championships!

The next day Ben competed at the West of England Open judo championships in Swindon, where he fought extremely well, and won a silver medal. Recently, Ben and his younger brother Toby competed at the Kent International Judo competition held at Crystal Palace, London. With over 1500 competitors, this is one of the hardest events on the Judo calendar. Ben fought well against some very tough opposition in his new 60kg weight category, only to be defeated in the Semi Final, finishing a very respectable 5th place. Ben has been selected to represent the West of England and is soon to compete at the National Team events in Sheffield.

Ben thanks the Cheddar Youth Trust for awarding him a grant to help with the many expenses involved in this underfunded sport.
