And this is not my song, but it’s mine to use.” -- “Sadie” Joanna Newsom’s 2004 album, The Milk-Eyed Mender, was released at a time when music blogs were reaching new levels of popularity within certain sections of music and online communities. During this time, songs from nearly every high profile indie rock release seemed to find their way onto music blogs (often, to the chagrin of the music industry, far before slated release dates). Newsom’s songs were no exception – she was often something of a hot topic on blogs like Stereogum, My Old Kentucky Blog, Brooklyn Vegan, Gorilla vs. -

So, without further ado, I give you the best band ever, Brand New. Thanks to Shadman and Nick for their help with this post as well. Brand New is from Long Island, New York, and was formed in 2000. This group had their roots in another group called Rookie Lot, which three Long Island kids named Jesse Lacey, Garrett Tierney, and Brian Lane were in, along with two other members (who eventually join Crime in Stereo and Movielife respectively). The three remaining members, along with the addition of Vin Accardi (formerly One Last Goodbye), came together to form a new group. Vuala, Brand New. After several demos, they put out their debut in 2001 on Triple Crown Records. At this time they wrote catchy pop-punk songs full of teenage bitterness (well). Their next release, Deja Entendu, showed their maturation as a band and reaching a much larger audience. -
Masculinity in Emo Music a Thesis Submitted to the Faculty of Arts and Social Science in Candi
CARLETON UNIVERSITY FLUID BODIES: MASCULINITY IN EMO MUSIC A THESIS SUBMITTED TO THE FACULTY OF ARTS AND SOCIAL SCIENCE IN CANDIDACY FOR THE DEGREE OF MASTER OF ARTS DEPARTMENT OF MUSIC BY RYAN MACK OTTAWA, ONTARIO MAY 2014 ABSTRACT Emo is a genre of music that typically involves male performers, which evolved out of the punk and hardcore movements in Washington DC during the mid-80s. Scholarly literature on emo has explored its cultural and social contexts in relation to the “crisis” of masculinity—the challenging of the legitimacy of patriarchy through “alternative” forms of masculinity. This thesis builds upon this pioneering work but departs from its perpetuation of strict masculine binaries by conflating hegemonic and subordinate/alternative masculinities into a single subject position, which I call synergistic masculinity. In doing so, I use emo to explicate this vis-à-vis an intertextual analysis that explores the dominant themes in 1) lyrics; 2) the sites of vocal production (head, throat, chest) in conjunction with pitch and timbre; 3) the extensional and intensional intervallic relationships between notes and chords, and the use of dynamics in the musical syntax; 4) the use of public and private spaces, as well as the performative masculine body in music video. I posit that masculine emo performers dissolve these hierarchically organized masculinities, which allows for a deeper musical meaning and the extramusical signification of masculinity. Keywords: emo, synergistic masculinity, performativity, music video, masculinities, lyrics, vocal production, musical syntax, dynamics. ABSTRAIT Emo est un genre musical qui implique typiquement des musiciens de sexe masculine et qui est issu de movement punk et hardcore originaire de Washington DC durant les années 80. -

This Ain’t a Scene, It’s a Buzzer Race Sadboys are temporary. Sad trumpets are forever. Written by Brian Luong Tossups: 1. This band’s extensive and impressive merchandise catalogue can be attributed to guitarist Nick Steinhardt’s side occupation as a graphic designer. A live EP following this band’s sophomore studio album was titled Live on BBC Radio 1 and featured vocals from Jordan Dreyer of La Dispute. It’s not Red Hot Chili Peppers, but this band’s distinct asterisk-shaped logo was meant to evoke converging road markings leading to a sunset, and was first used in promotional artwork for the band’s second album, with that album’s initials “PTSBBAM” arranged in the negative spaces of the logo. This band’s 2016 single “Palm Dreams” was described by their frontman as a song about his inability to ask his mother about why she moved to California after she passed. The album from which that single is taken, as a whole, deals with themes of frontman Jeremy Bolm grieving the loss of his mother due to cancer. For 10 points, give the name of this Los Angeles-based post-hardcore band, which you may know from the albums Parting the Sea Between Brightness and Me and Stage Four. ANSWER: Touché Amoré 2. Jon Smith, PhD ACKNOWLEDGMENTS 2 An Internship with Kirvin Doak Communications I would like to thank my parents for their ongoing motivation to help me excel in not only in my education but also throughout life. Being the first generation student I never imagined attaining my master's degree, but here I am, thanks to you. Thank you for bringing me lunch when I was in elementary school, rides to the airport for undergrad sorority conferences, having patience with me when I was stressed about graduation, and most importantly for loving me unconditionally. I want to thank my gladiators (you know who you are) who reminded me as to why I was perusing this degree when all I wanted to do was give up. Helping me take notes, ask a question in class for me when I didn't understand a concept, bringing me an endless amount of coffee to ease the writing process and truly believing that I am going to be successful in the near future. And finally, I would like to thank my professors that I have had at Southern Utah University. -
