Cynthia Cummings. associate vice president of Campus Life and one of the minds behind Unity Day, said the purpose ofthe event was to bond the university and establish a sense of unity in the com­ munity. "It's a chance to meet people you don't ordinarily associate with," Cummings said. "We tend to hang out with people we know and like and stick with a group, so this is a chance to mingle, meet and spend time with new people." The idea for Unity Day stemmed from the numerous hate crimes that plagued campus last semester, Cummings said. Various students from multicultural groups brainstormed with Cummings, University President David P. Roselle and Marilyn Prime, director of Student Centers, to develop an event to curb these incidences and create a sense of cohesiveness and understanding. The event kicked off with a march from various campus loca­ tions to the North Green, where students, faculty and com­ munity residents socialized and mingled against a backdrop of belly dancers, comedy skits and personal readings by students. Lalena Luna, program coordinator of Student Centers chairwoman of the Unity Day student planning com- mittee, said she left many of the decisions and planning up to the students on the committee, chosen from various cultural groups on campus. The committee chose the evening's Keynote speaker, Lee Mun Wah, a renowned Chinese-American therapist, educa­ tor, poet, filmmaker, folk-teller and author. Senior Jennifer Sun, committee member and co-President of the East and Southeast Asian Union, recommended Lee as the speaker. ~·1 heard of him through UConn, and they said how great he his, how he's been on Oprah and won all these awards and people leave [his workshops] crying," Sun said. This group had their roots in another group called Rookie Lot, which three Long Island kids named Jesse Lacey, Garrett Tierney, and Brian Lane were in, along with two other members (who eventually join Crime in Stereo and Movielife respectively). The three remaining members, along with the addition of Vin Accardi (formerly One Last Goodbye), came together to form a new group. Vuala, Brand New. After several demos, they put out their debut in 2001 on Triple Crown Records. At this time they wrote catchy pop-punk songs full of teenage bitterness (well). Their next release, Deja Entendu, showed their maturation as a band and reaching a much larger audience.

    CARLETON UNIVERSITY FLUID BODIES: MASCULINITY IN EMO MUSIC A THESIS SUBMITTED TO THE FACULTY OF ARTS AND SOCIAL SCIENCE IN CANDIDACY FOR THE DEGREE OF MASTER OF ARTS DEPARTMENT OF MUSIC BY RYAN MACK OTTAWA, ONTARIO MAY 2014 ABSTRACT Emo is a genre of music that typically involves male performers, which evolved out of the punk and hardcore movements in Washington DC during the mid-80s. Scholarly literature on emo has explored its cultural and social contexts in relation to the “crisis” of masculinity—the challenging of the legitimacy of patriarchy through “alternative” forms of masculinity. This thesis builds upon this pioneering work but departs from its perpetuation of strict masculine binaries by conflating hegemonic and subordinate/alternative masculinities into a single subject position, which I call synergistic masculinity. In doing so, I use emo to explicate this vis-à-vis an intertextual analysis that explores the dominant themes in 1) lyrics; 2) the sites of vocal production (head, throat, chest) in conjunction with pitch and timbre; 3) the extensional and intensional intervallic relationships between notes and chords, and the use of dynamics in the musical syntax; 4) the use of public and private spaces, as well as the performative masculine body in music video. I posit that masculine emo performers dissolve these hierarchically organized masculinities, which allows for a deeper musical meaning and the extramusical signification of masculinity.
