:: View email as a web page :: For the past 15 years, Manchester Orchestra has been one of the most popular emo bands on the planet. The one person who has been there every step of the way is founding singer-songwriter Andy Hull, who started the band when he was in his teens and has charted his own growing-up process with each album. Manchester Orchestra has also matured a lot over the years, evolving from an intense and volatile post-hardcore outt on albums like 2009’s Mean Everything To Nothing to the expansive and philosophical indie rock of their latest, The Million Masks Of God, which drops next week. Along the way, they’ve managed to somehow grow their audience while retaining committed fans who connected with the early records as teenagers, including famous acolytes like Phoebe Bridgers and Julien Baker. “Even though everything did well at that time, it wasn’t really accepted by critics and ‘cool’ people,” Hull recently mused about his back catalogue, “and that totally worked in our favor, because it still holds up. It sounds, to me, pretty timeless.” Ahead of the release of The Million Masks Of God, Hull reected on every Manchester Orchestra LP, candidly breaking down the myriad fascinating dramas that marked the process of making each record. 61.1 ONLY US I see through your eyes; you breathe with my lungs; I strain with your ear to make out the words your mother sung. I bless with your hand; you pray on my knees; it’s my blood in your veins, and your heart is beating in me. Finally when will it be enough? To find there’s no them, there is only us. There’s only us. I strike with your fist; you shoot with my gun; we spit in your face with with my mouth, and curse me with your tongue. We cast us aside; we silence our plea; but the system that terrifies you should terrify me. We burn at our stakes, we die by our swords, we choke in our trenches, we drown in our wars. We’re locked in our chains though we long to be free; we keep building walls till it’s so hard to see we are one with everything. We are one, but it’s so hard to see. THRICE PALMS PAGE 003 87594-2 61.2 THE GREY There was a time when I tried to hold the ocean in my fists – when I mistook the language for the light. There was a tightness that gripped my soul and bubbled at my wrists, and choked me within inches of my life. But now I’m letting go, and I can finally breathe – I can finally breathe. And my hands are open, reaching out – I’m learning how to live with doubt – I’m learning how to lean into the grey.

So, without further ado, I give you the best band ever, Brand New. Thanks to Shadman and Nick for their help with this post as well. Brand New is from Long Island, New York, and was formed in 2000. This group had their roots in another group called Rookie Lot, which three Long Island kids named Jesse Lacey, Garrett Tierney, and Brian Lane were in, along with two other members (who eventually join Crime in Stereo and Movielife respectively). The three remaining members, along with the addition of Vin Accardi (formerly One Last Goodbye), came together to form a new group. Vuala, Brand New. After several demos, they put out their debut in 2001 on Triple Crown Records. At this time they wrote catchy pop-punk songs full of teenage bitterness (well). Their next release, Deja Entendu, showed their maturation as a band and reaching a much larger audience.
