Inno a Satana (4 min 48 s) . 65 INTRODUCTION Emperors’s In the Nightside Eclipse from 1994 was their first full-length studio album. It is never the less considered a landmark in black metal music, and defined a more symphonic and harmonic refined approach to the genre than what was previously known. The combination of dark mystic text material, cinematic orchestral harmonies and Ihsahn’s extremely theatrical vocal flexibility, makes it grandiose and almost operatic in character. This transcription is based on Emperor’s original studio recording. In general, black metal is music for the live stage, and fully compatible with transcription to sheets. It is our hope that this study score shall provide valuable insight into the many qualities, technical as aesthetical, of this music genre. Eventually, the score allows for other groups and musicians to play and interpret the songs, and thus in their own way to contribute to Emperor’s legacy. The numbering of the pieces starts with “Into the Infinity of Thoughts” as the first piece. 2) Black metal vocals are characterized by the use of so-called “death growl”, which is an extreme combination of screaming with a deep pressurized rusty vocal noise, and singing.     Band: Ihsahn (N) Genre: Progressive Black Metal Label: Candlelight Album Titel: Arktis. Spielzeit: 57:31 VÖ: 08.04.2016 Über den Frontmann der legendären Band Emperor, Ihsahn, muss man nicht mehr viel sagen. Mit "Arktis." veröffentlicht der norwegische Multiinstrumentalist sein mittlerweile sechstes Soloalbum und hat sich dafür einige Gäste ins Boot geholt. So geben sich unter anderem Einar Solberg (Leprous), Matt Heafy (Trivium), Jørgen Munkeby (Shining) und der norwegische Autor Hans Herbjornsrud die Ehre, was in mir sehr hohe Erwartungen weckt. "Disassembled" steigt direkt mit einem sehr eingängigen Riff ein, während die zweite Gitarre im Hintergrund einige atmosphärische Akzente setzt. Außerdem besticht das Stück (wie einige andere auch) mit grandiosen Klargesangspassagen, welche über die sphärische Musik nahezu dahingleiten. Doch auch die düstere und rohe Seite von Ihsahn hat weiterhin seinen Anteil an den Songs und bildet so einen beeindruckenden Kontrast. Im Verlauf des Albums zeigt sich immer wieder Ihsahns experimentelle Ader, zum Beispiel in den sehr elektronischen "South Winds" und "Frail", die wirken, als hätte man gnadenlos den progressiven Gedanken von Mayhem während ihrer "Grand Declaration of War"-Zeit auf die Spitze getrieben. Doch keine Angst, "Arktis." ist kein Album, dass vor Elektronik fast platzt. Im kompletten Gegensatz dazu stehen Songs wie "Until I Too Dissolve", welches viele Hard Rock-Anleihen vorweisen kann, das vom Saxophon (gespielt von Jørgen Munkeby) durchzogene "Crooked Red Line" oder der beeindruckende 9-minütige Übersong "Til Tor Ulven", über den ich noch nicht zu viel verraten möchte. Fazit: Ihsahn schafft es ein weiteres Mal, ein abwechslungsreiches und dauerhaft fesselndes Album vorzulegen, welches durch seine experimentelle Art sicher nicht nur innerhalb der Metalszene seine Befürworter finden wird.

    Late 1960's - Early 1970's The birth of heavy metal. Groups like Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple were the first heavy metal bands. Late 1970's The rise of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal. Bands like Iron Maiden and Judas Priest become very popular. 1978 Van Halen released their debut album. This began the Los Angeles/Sunset Strip scene, and many bands would come out of this era, including Motley Crue and Quiet Riot. The so called "hair bands" like Poison, Warrant and Ratt came from that scene as well. The Who's Keith Moon died. Bands formed this year: Dokken, Ratt, Whitesnake A sample of heavy metal albums released in 1978: Black Sabbath - Never Say Die Judas Priest - Stained Class UFO - Obsession 1979 The German band Accept releases their self-titled debut album. They are considered to be the first European power metal band. Ozzy Osbourne was fired from Black Sabbath and replaced by Ronnie James Dio. Bands formed this year: Europe, Hanoi Rocks, Trouble and Venom. Here is classical black metal served. Originally (founded in 2009), the band from London named itself Seed Of Detest. Under this name they released the "Seed" demo until the band, that consists of members of Eyes Of Solitude and drummer Khrudd (Colosus, Clouds, Deos, Vaer and just Eyes Of Solitude among others), changed the name into Sidious in 2012. However if I have a look at the bands in whom Khrudd plays and had played, I get the impression that there exists only one single drummer in the most populated city within Europe (more than eight millions of inhabitants) that is able to play black metal. For whatever reasons they chose the name Sidious first was a mystery to me. At least at first sight, because I only knew the word Sidious related to Star Wars. Darth Sidious, or imperator Palpatine. But if one has a closer look, the choice of the name is clarified. The english word "insidious" can be described as: act in a subtle and profound way with damaging effects. Darth Sidious in general is described as shifty, thoroughly evil, perfidious and mighty. This is a quite suitable description for what Sidious are delivering with their first album. After this incredibly long introduction I want to come to the gist which is the music. Because this music is pleasant by all means.

This heavy metal scene was populated by bands such as Emperor, Darkthrone, Burzum, Gorgoroth, and Satyricon. These bands performed chaotic music, often setting lyrics with themes of Satanism, anti-Christianity, murder, rape, and torture. Extremely fast or slow tempos, unusual song structures, distortion, and lo-fi sound quality distinguished the scene stylistically from other European and American heavy metals. The individuals who created this music did so under the disguise of masks: pseudonyms and corpsepaint, a makeup style that makes one look like a corpse. Members of black metal bands also engaged in extremely violent and criminal activities, including burning churches, murdering strangers and friends for various reasons, and committing suicide. This thesis explores the connections between the music and the transgressions of this music subculture, with masking at the intersection between the two.

Utfordringen når man tar utgangspunkt i enkeltpersoners erfaringer, er hvor skillet går mellom det normale og det eksentriske? Carlo Ginzburg følger denne problematikken ved å stille spørsmål om hvor vitenskapelig historiefaget bør være. Dersom man bruker svake vitenskapelige standarder, vil man få muligheten til å skape mange resultater. Slike svar må være tentative, men de trenger ikke nødvendigvis mangle plausibilitet av den grunn. Alternativet er strenge vitenskapelige standarder, som i verste fall vil ende opp med resultater som ikke sier noe annet enn det helt åpenvare. Historiefaget har i all tid søkt dypere enn det ”alle” vet, og må hele tiden balansere mellom åpenhet og gyldighet. Terje Emberland skriver om norrønamannen Alf Maria Amble i dette nummeret av Fortid. Han problematiserer innledningsvis hvor mye man kan hente ut av ett menneskes jødehat. Emberland hevder at det er noe helt eget ved psykopatologien til Amble, men gjennom å sette hovedpersonen inn i en bredere samfunnskontekst, kan man ane hvilke holdninger som rådet i samfunnet generelt. Amble ble i hvert fall ikke dømt hardere for sin antisemittisme. Slik blir skildringen av en person med på kaste lys på samfunnet, på tross av at fokuset først og fremst er på Amble selv. Slike analyser av enkeltmennesker eller mindre grupper kan selvfølgelig ikke stå alene som forklaringsmodell. Like fullt er slike bidrag viktige og sentrale i historiefaget. Man er nødt til å ta innover seg at det er mennesker som er studiefeltet til historikeren.
