Does the mention of these musicians make you picture a round black record? A vinyl record? The vintage vinyl is almost as much of a classic as the bands themselves. These vinyl records are commemorated annually on August 12. Vinyl records are also known as a gramophone record, phonograph record or a record. It is an analog sound storage medium consisting of a flat disc which has an inscribed, modulated spiral groove. Vinyl records are referred to based on rotational speed The RPM’s, or revolutions per minute of the more popular vinyls are: 45 33 1/3 78s Other features of vinyl records included reproductive accuracy or “fidelity” (High Fidelity or Hi-Fi, Orthophonic and Full-Range), their time capacity (long playing or single), and the number of channels of audio provided (mono, stereo or quadraphonic). Vinyl records were also sold in different sizes such as: 12 inch 10 inch 7 inch Vinyl records left the mainstream in 1991. They continued to be manufactured and have started to become increasingly popular with collectors and audiophiles. Perhaps the most famous records in the universe are the two copies of the Golden Record placed aboard the Voyager 1 and 2 spacecrafts. The Golden Records feature musical selections from different cultures and eras, spoken greetings from Earth-people in fifty-five languages, and other messages. Each record is encased in a protective aluminum jacket, together with a cartridge and a needle. Instructions, in symbolic language, explain the origin of the spacecraft and how the record is to be played. Today, Voyager is nearly 12 billion miles away from Earth. Da-da-da daaaaah: Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony, performed by the Philadelphia Symphony Orchestra under Leopold Stokowski, was the first 12-inch recording released by RCA Victor in 1931. On June 21, 1948, Columbia Records put the needle down on history’s first successful microgroove plastic, 12-inch, 33-1/3 LP in New York. According to the Wired.com article“Columbia’s Microgroove LP Makes Albums Sound Good,” engineer Peter Carl Goldmark “set out with his staff to evolve the 78-rpm record to 33-1/3 rpm” in an effort to “extend playback time to more than 20 minutes per side and shrink vinyl grooves to an accessible, acceptable millimeter size.” When a record is played, the sound can be different on the outer edge than the inner edge. This is caused because the tracks on the inside are closer together than the outer tracks. Vinyl recordings have been around longer than you think- they have been traced back to the early 19th century in France, as well as to a man named Emile Berliner. Goldmark, a Member of the National Academy of Engineering, President and Director of Research of Goldmark Communications Corporation, and previously for many years Chief Research Executive of Columbia Broadcasting System (CBS), died on December 7, 1977. He was widely acknowledged as one of the world's leading electronic inventors and innovators. He was responsible for more than 160 inventions in such fields as acoustics, television, phonograph recording, and film reproduction, which have had an important effect on the development of electronics for entertainment and education. Prior to founding Goldmark Communications, Dr. Goldmark had the principal responsibilities for research at CBS. Starting in 1936 with two technicians and one room, he built an industrial research laboratory rated as one of the leading electronics and communications research organizations in the world. He retired as President and Director of Research of CBS Laboratories and Vice-President of Columbia Broadcasting System, Inc., on December 31, 1971. As the head of Goldmark Communications Corporation, which he founded in January 1972, Dr. Goldmark continued research and development efforts in such fields as cable television, electronic publishing, satellite communications, and many others destined to have a profound effect on society and the quality of life for mankind. A television (TV) system transmits both audio and video signals to millions of households through electromagnetic waves and is one of the most important means of entertainment as well as information access. With the never-ending technological breakthroughs and the continuously increasing demands of audio and video services, the TV system has evolved over generations with several important developmental periods in less than a century. 1.1.1 Birth and Development of Television Black-and-White TV Era In the mid-1920s, the Scottish inventor John Logie Baird demonstrated the successful transmission of motion images produced by a scanning disk with the resolution of 30 lines, good enough to discern a human face. Though color television as now brought into homes worldwide is a different system from his invention—the so-called field sequential system— without his initiative, introduction of color television might have been long delayed. Although several efforts toward producing long-playing records were in progress, Gold- mark's concentration on 33-1/3 r.p.m. succeeded. When President Carter presented to him the National Medal of Science in 1977, just a few days before his death, he added to the citation the personal remark that he was particularly grateful to Dr. Goldmark for developing the long-playing record. Peter Carl Goldmark was born on Aradi Street No. 60, in Budapest, Hungary on December 2, 1906. Little is known about his early years. From his autobiographical book, Mav- erick Inventor, which he published with the aid of Lee Edson, a free-lance writer, we take it that his mother was very musical.

La obra de la ingeniería civil de México tiene desafíos inéditos, como: 1.- La llegada inminente de cambios tecnológicos disruptivos que cambiarán los modos de vida y de producción en los próximos años. 2.- El cambio climático causado por efectos ambientales antropogénicos. 3.- La necesidad de insertarse en un sistema de planeación nacional del desarrollo que permita construir con la mayor eficiencia: A) La infraestructura estratégica que garantice el crecimiento del país. B) Las obras públicas que fomenten el desarrollo integral del país con sustentabilidad y aumento de la competitividad nacional. C) Impulsar la movilidad y el bienestar social de los mexicanos.
