If HIV in the obscene, late night voicemail messages left and AIDS are gay diseases, that means that the other 1,413 to us by drunks who want to go on a rant and who (we’ll be generous and count HIV/AIDS as 2) were “put on fi gure gay people to be an acceptable scapegoat. gaycalgary and edmonton magazine #59, September 2008 5 So if they can’t fi nd moral high ground through immunity to HIV/AIDS, then they have to fi nd fault in circumstance. This is the argument that AIDS is the result of the corrupt “gay lifestyle”, where their defi nition of our lifestyle usually includes the term “promiscuity”. ALL human beings (not just gay people) are designed to enjoy having sex – it is a ba- sic physical need that cannot be ignored, even with the help of a bible and a trusty fl og. Yes, it’s no secret that the bible thumpers hold a dim view on any kind of sex – even if they can’t help doing it, they sure as heck aren’t allowed to enjoy it because God says so! Nevermind that the bible was written at a time when STDs weren’t well understood, so when Mr. Apostle’s geni- tals started to itch and welt after bedding the skanky town prostitute, he probably thought God was trying to tell him something: hey doofus, avoid skanky prostitutes, not sex is evil!! Damnit, he went with sex is evil. Bacteria and viruses are nasty, selfi sh little opportunists that misuse their hosts often with little regard for the dam- age that they cause – their survival depends on it. They can and will fi nd any possible way to exploit our vulnerabilities, be it an untrained immune system or a more general fl aw in the design of our species. If, according to bible thumpers, sex is evil and we’re supposed to be good, then the need for sex (and the enjoyment thereof) is a major fl aw in the design of a human being. HIV/AIDS is indeed transmitted through sexual contact (among other means), and bible thumpers love to rub our faces in this fact because it supports their assertion that sex is evil – and even better, that promiscuous homosexual sex is evil. But AIDS is virtually a non-issue for lesbians, soning, the only thing left to do for bible thumpers (and their so it must only mean promiscuous homosexual MALE sex is less mystical redneck counterparts) in their quest to prove evil. It’s all so confusing, so to save the day, here is kicker themselves more virtuous than homosexuals, is point out #2: most other diseases, many very deadly, are spread by what they perceive to be the case: that HIV/AIDS is more particles expelled by the carrier and inhaled or ingested by prevalent in the gay community than in the straight com- the next victim. This is of fl ossing, bleeding, laughing, sneezing, coughing, urinating, course due in part to the prominent African epidemic, which defecating - you get the picture. Any interaction between I’ve disgustingly seen used by racists as an opportunity to the outside of the body and the inside of the body is a put in their two cents about how evil black people are. Even chance for disease to slip in and out. But I don’t know of more disgustingly, the same breed of bible thumper is over any life forms yet that are completely self-sustaining, able in Africa discouraging condom use and leaving the people to survive without input and output from their environment to act out superstitions that make the disease spread faster and fellow beings. If spreading disease is a sign of evil, you (sex with a virgin as a cure for HIV). might as well blame the human race for being alive! In fact, one might argue that a climate of religious op- When unable to contort their minds to invent divine rea- pression is the common factor between Africa and the gay community – where the necessary education, openness, and communication needed to prevent the disease from spread- ing are hampered by unreasonable biblical expectations. How’s that for a right-back-at-you? Now I can’t say that people who contract HIV/AIDS are completely innocent in the matter. The reality is we all have to take measures to protect ourselves and others from the dangers we face in life. Still, HIV/AIDS is a harsh conse- quence for sex, and even more tragic in rape cases where sex is uninvited. Hate the disease, don’t hate the victim – they suffer enough as it is. HIV/AIDS is a HUMAN disease, and any person who cheers on something that kills their own species is a deplor- able traitor, no better than an accessory to murder.

By Benjamin Hawkcliff Community | Event It was a long time coming. After years of having nary a bear- related group or event in Edmonton, Daren Kavich (featured on this month’s cover) and Aaron Granley put things into motion to create a night out for furry men of Alberta. In March 2008, the fi rst Beef Bear Bash took place at Boots Bar and Lounge, and it has been smooth sail- ing ever since. “We were at Boots complaining how nobody comes out, everyone in Edmonton seems to stay home. It’s basically a fun night out It also draws from outside of Edmonton. Many from Cal- gary, Red Deer, and other parts of Alberta will make the trip to Edmonton specifi cally to include a Beef Bear Bash in their plans. “I think it is great, it means everyone is having a great time and enjoying themselves. We’ve had people from places like Winnipeg or Saskatchewan who have shown up because they were in Edmonton and thought it would be nice to meet people while visiting the province.” As the weather turns colder, the bears kick it up a notch with their next event on October 4th - a costume and fetish themed evening. “It will defi nitely heat things up a bit more than the aver- age party. The development – now part of a larger project termed “The Rivers” - aims to rejuvenate prime real estate east of City Hall to Fort Calgary and from 9th Avenue north to the banks of the Bow River. This may have an impact on an established and well known bar in our community: The Calgary Eagle. The Calgary Eagle is locat- ed in the Franklin Building. 22 gaycalgary and edmonton magazine #59, September 2008 ‘Big Brother’ is Alive and Well… …and Coming to a Government Agency Near You

By Stephen Lock Politics When George Orwell wrote his classic dystopian novel “Nineteen Eighty-Four” in 1948, he envisioned a gritty world dominated by a dictator known as Big Brother in which all aspects of citizens’ lives, now reduced to “proles” (Newspeak for ‘proletar- ian’ - the Marxist working class), were electronically monitored and controlled. Privacy was a thing of the past, only nobody remembered the past and all references to the past, or anything else Big Brother did not wish the proles to know about, were wiped from the public record. Privacy is a basic right. Without it, humans are too often reduced to being pawns of the state with all our individual ingly becoming a rare commodity and the various foibles, indiscretions, thoughts, views, actions, and beliefs invasions of that privacy by the state and its laid bare for all to see and, too often, punished. agents - to say nothing of business inter- ests - needs to be vigorously resisted. Too often it is not. Like the proles In an era so dominated by electronics, privacy is increas- in the Oceania of Nineteen Eighty-Four too many of us are complacent and even prepared to accept certain invasions of privacy “for the greater good,” arguing that if someone has nothing to hide, then why should the individual be concerned about having their hard drive searched or their internet activity looked at? A more Big Brother-ish concept would be diffi cult to come up with. Recently, Xtra! printed a piece about a gay couple re- turning from the US who were detained by the Canadian Border Service Agency (CBSA), apparently because there was a problem with the paperwork on a vehicle they had purchased at a vintage car show in Gettysburg, PA and were towing back to their home in Ottawa. However, for some reason the Canadian border guards chose to go through their truck and open their laptop. One of the men, Rick Frenette, is quoted in Xtra! as saying, “they opened up the laptop, and I guess one of the icons said ‘porn’ on it.” How many gay men don’t have porn on their computers? There is certainly nothing illegal about gay porn, or possess- ing it, as long as it is clearly between consenting adults. When the agent came across some locked material, he asked for the passwords, which were provided to him. While the border guards seem interested in the contents of Rick and his partner Shawn’s laptop, they never checked the men’s cell phones, Shawn’s Blackberry, or the loose burned CDs in the truck’s glove compartment. The two men were then left alone for an hour as border guards conferred in an offi ce. When the offi cers returned, Rick and Shawn were informed their laptop was to be confi s- cated due to “questionable material” having been found. The “questionable material” was a downloaded video of

By Rob Diaz-Marino Event | Spotlight “I moved to Edmonton from Toronto to slow down a bit after 15 years of working in clubs and at parties in that city. I didn’t realize the gay scene would be as slow as it is here,” says Jamie Miller, one of the founders of the Pure Parties that have grown to high acclaim in Edmonton, in mere months. “Soon after I arrived, The Roost shut down and that left a huge void in the gay community. There is only one dance club left…so that leaves a lot of people out, unable to get in on the weekends. …We wanted to create events that give people somewhere to go at least once a month.” Miller makes no mention of some of the smaller gay es- tablishments in the city, such as Boots and Prism, who do technically have dance fl oors. Both have invested money to improve their facilities since the Roost closed, and have hired weekend DJs. However, neither is set up primarily as a dance club, and as such they tend to be overlooked by the crowd Miller draws with the Pure Parties. Miller describes the monthly event as, “…a place for [peo- ple] to look forward to coming each month, which provides a safe place where guys can dance with their boyfriends and feel comfortable knowing they won’t get hassled.” He went on to say, “We’re going to throw unique events not seen in Edmonton’s gay scene for a long time. Born Reginald Kenneth Dwight on March 25th 1947, he became Elton John as tribute to former band- mates Elton Dean and Long John Baldry. In 1976 he came out as bisexual, but after his four-year marriage to music engineer Renate Blauel ended, he announced he was gay. He met his Canadian partner in 1993 and the two entered a civil partnership in December 2005. While music has always been Elton John’s claim to fame, he truly has overcome a lot in his 61 years. He has admitted to drug and alcohol addictions and bulemia. He overcame the stigma of being gay to continue to be a successful artist and performer. The other important side of John is his charitable work. He established the Elton John AIDS Foundation, a charity to fund programmes for HIV/AIDS prevention, for the elimination of prejudice and discrimination against HIV/AIDS-affected individuals, and for providing services to people living with or at risk of contracting HIV/AIDS. This cause continues to be one of his personal passions. To raise money for his AIDS charity, John hosts annually a glamorous White Tie & Tiara Ball, to which many famous celebrities are invited. Elton John last performed in Alberta in September 2006, to rave reviews and sold out audiences. A concert earlier this year in Kitchener, Ontario saw John, solo with only his piano, play for two hours and forty minutes. In an era of 70 minute paint-by-numbers shows, you defi nitely get your money’s worth at an Elton John concert, even at the high price of $149.00 for top tickets.

It was refreshing to have such a relaxed schedule with these happenings, where Leon would zip around camp to gauge how ready people were, and then the “town crier” would announce when times were confi rmed. I had resolved this year that I would let loose and enter the mud wrestling competition that I had seen in the photos from previous years. But with how cold the weather was, I chickened out completely. Instead I enjoyed myself taking pictures of other people getting dirty – including Leon who was accosted and dunked in the mud pit. Another ongoing source of entertainment for us were our next door neighbours, a clique from the Edmonton bears group that called themselves “The Heathers” – we would chuckle to ourselves every time one of the burly men would put on a queeny voice and call each other by the name. I later found out that it was a movie reference, but I already got the point. Though I’m somewhat used to roughing it from past holi- days in Mexico, I have to say this weekend I learned Steve is

A detailed and very interesting look at bathhouse behaviour can be found in Tewksbury (2002 – see refer- ence list at end). The end result is that whatever transpires is mutually agreed to before it gets enacted. Bathhouses are an established part of gay culture where the pursuit of casual sexual activity is the norm. There are few pretences between men clad only in towels, except for the fact that everyone differs in who they fi nd attractive and in what they are looking for at any particular time. As in all sexual encounters, it is important to practice that which is safe, sane, and consensual. Practicing safer sex is a must when engaging in sexual experiences with people of unknown HIV status. Bathhouses always have condoms available at no charge. Ask for them if they are not readily available throughout the establishment. Many famous individuals have frequented bathhouses, including Truman Capote, Michel Foucault, Rock Hud- son, and Rudolf Nureyev. [21] The bathhouse experience is what you want it to be. It is both a playground and an established institution of gay culture.
