February 2014 Representing Today’S Great Labels This Month's Highlights DEALER INFORMATION SERVICE: NO. 265 FEBRUARY 2014 REPRESENTING TODAY’S GREAT LABELS THIS MONTH'S HIGHLIGHTS Select Music and Video Distribution Limited 3 Wells Place, Redhill, Surrey RH1 3SL Tel: 01737 645600 Fax: 01737 644065 Highlight Claudio MONTEVERDI of the month Madrigals of Love and Loss James Gilchrist Arcangelo Jonathan Cohen Gramophone Award-winning ensemble Arcangelo (in their first recording as a vocal and instrumental group) presents a selection from Monteverdi’s last three books of madrigals. These ardent and passionate works are microcosms of Monteverdi’s great operas, and among his most celebrated music. CDA68019 Franz SCHUBERT Der Wanderer and other songs Florian Boesch Roger Vignoles Florian Boesch and Roger Vignoles were shortlisted for a BBC Music Magazine award for their first Hyperion CDA68010 album (Loewe Songs and Ballads). Boesch’s warm, sensuously attractive baritone voice, first-rate diction and remarkable acting ability were enthusiastically praised. Now the duo turn to a selection of Schubert’s Lieder from the dark heart of the repertoire. Zoltán KODÁLY String Quartets Nos 1 & 2; Intermezzo; Gavotte Dante Quartet In the chamber works recorded here, spanning Kodály's career, we can hear an unwavering desire to place genuine Hungarian folk music (rather than the ‘style hongrois’ espoused by the Strauss family and many CDA67999 other composers ) within classical music traditions. Bartók wrote of his compatriot that ‘if I were to name the composer whose works are the most perfect embodiment of the Hungarian spirit, I would answer, Kodály’. Alexander ZEMLINSKY Symphony in D minor; Symphony in B flat major BBC National Orchestra of Wales Martyn Brabbins The BBC National Orchestra of Wales and Martyn Brabbins perform two works from the crucible of the Viennese fin de siècle. CDA67985 Karol SZYMANOWSKI Masques, Métopes and Études Cédric Tiberghien In Cédric Tiberghien’s first solo recording for Hyperion he embraces the sensual, crepuscular sound-world CDA67886 of Szymanowski’s piano music. Tiberghien’s expressive, mercurial, quicksilver playing with its extraordinary pianissimos and kaleidoscopic range of colour makes him an ideal performer of this repertoire. Antonín Herbert v DVORÁK HOWELLS Piano Quintet in A, Op 81 Choral Music String Quintet in G, Op 77 Wells Cathedral Choir The Gaudier Ensemble Rupert Gough Malcolm Archer (from CDA66796) (from CDA67494) CDH55472 CDH55456 2 FEBRUARY 2014 Felix MENDELSSOHN Mendelssohn in Birmingham, Vol. 1 The Hebrides; Symphony No. 5 ‘Reformation’; Symphony No. 4 ‘Italian’ City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra Edward Gardner ‘Mendelssohn in Birmingham’ is an exciting new recording project with the CBSO and its Principal Highlight CHSA 5132 of the month Guest Conductor, Edward Gardner. It celebrates Mendelssohn’s special relationship with the city’s Town Hall and will feature the complete symphonies recorded there. York BOWEN Chamber Works Phantasy Quintet, Op. 93; Clarinet Sonata, Op. 109; Rhapsody Trio, Op. 80; Piano Trio, Op. 118; Piano Trio in D minor (unfinished) Gould Piano Trio Robert Plane Mia Cooper CHAN 10805 David Adams Chandos continues to champion the works of York Bowen, this time turning to the chamber works of this great composer who, after years of neglect, is finding ever growing audiences. DEBUSSY, RABAUD, WIDOR, PIERNÉ, MILHAUD, MUCZYNSKI, BERNSTEIN, MARTINŮ The Virtuoso Clarinet, Vol. 2 Michael Collins Michael McHale Chandos exclusive artist Michael Collins here presents the second volume in his series designed to display the extraordinarily wide range of music written for the clarinet. Volume 1 was BBC Music CHAN 10804 Magazine Editor’s Choice and received IRR Outstanding from International Record Review, which stated: ‘It is difficult to imagine a finer performance than is given here.’ Sergey PROKOFIEV Piano Concertos Jean-Efflam Bavouzet Gianandrea Noseda BBC Philharmonic Exclusive Chandos artist Jean-Efflam Bavouzet performs all five of Prokofiev’s formidable piano concertos in partnership with Gianandrea Noseda conducting the BBC Philharmonic. CHAN 10802(2) Kurt ATTERBERG Symphonies, Vol. 2 Symphony No. 2; Symphony No. 8 Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra Neeme Järvi Neeme Järvi and the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra present Vol. 2 in their series of the Symphonies of Atterberg. CHSA 5133 FEBRUARY 2014 3 SHEPPARD, DAVY, MUNDY The Voice of the Turtle Dove The Sixteen Harry Christophers In 2014 The Sixteen returns to its grass roots for the repertoire of the 14th Choral Pilgrimage tour as it revisits COR16119 the golden age of Renaissance polyphony in England. Ludwig van BEETHOVEN (1770-1827) Piano Concerto No. 3 in C minor, Op. 37 Wolfgang Amadeus MOZART (1756-1791) Piano Concerto No. 24 in C minor, K 491 Highlight Yevgeny Sudbin of the month Minnesota Orchestra, Osmo Vänskä BIS1978 The sequel to BISSACD1758 (2010), Sudbin and Vänskä go one step further and include Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 24, which is often regarded as having been the inspiration for Beethoven’s work. The mood is dramatic, even Romantic – memorably described as an ‘explosion of passion, of dark tragic emotions’. Carl NIELSEN (1865-1931) Symphony No. 4, Op. 29 ‘The Inextinguishable’; Symphony No. 5, Op. 50 Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra, Sakari Oramo These two central works in Nielsen’s production have now been selected for the first instalment of a complete Nielsen cycle by Sakari Oramo and the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra. Having enjoyed a close BIS2028 collaboration since 2008, this team has become ever more fine-tuned, as demonstrated on their previous BIS release, a performance of Elgar’s mighty Symphony No. 2. The Image of Melancholy EIKE: Savin; HOLBORNE: Image of Melancholy; Wanton; Muy Linda; Last Will and Testament; DOWLAND: Sorrow, Stay; Flow My Tears; Susanna; BIBER: Die Kreuztragung; BUXTEHUDE: Klag-Lied; Ó CATHÁIN: Tabhair Dom do Lámh; BALKE: Introducing Susanne; BYRD: Ye Sacred Muses; GOW: Niel Gow’s Lament Berit Norbakken Solset, Barokksolistene, Bjarte Eike (Artistic Director and Violin Soloist) BIS2057 This music does not belong to any particular style, but forms a musical matrimony between Nordic folk, the rich sounds of the Elizabethan consort and a modern approach to music-making (soundscapes by Jon Blake). Ludwig van BEETHOVEN (1770-1827) The Late Quartets arranged for String Orchestra String Quartets Nos. 13-16 Camerata Nordica, Terje Tønnesen Besides providing the greater dynamic spectrum that a larger ensemble can bring to the music, Tønnesen’s BIS1096 main aim in these transcriptions has been to strengthen the contrasts between intimate passages and fuller textures. Allan PETTERSSON (1911-1980) Symphony No. 9 Norrköping Symphony Orchestra, Christian Lindberg An ongoing cycle of all Pettersson’s symphonies - Christian Lindberg and the Norrköping Symphony Orchestra have received great acclaim for previous instalments. Vol. 6 was described as ‘a release that could well be the BIS2038 ideal introduction to Pettersson’s singular musical vision’ (IRR on BIS1980) and this release is accompanied by a bonus DVD, ‘Vox humana’ an 81-minute documentary on the composer. (Hybrid SACD + Bonus DVD) 4 FEBRUARY 2014 BRAHMS Symphony No. 3 in F major; Symphony No. 4 in E minor London Philharmonic Orchestra LPO-0075 Vladimir Jurowski LPO Principal Conductor Vladimir Jurowski completes his survey of Brahms’s four symphonies. Michael NYMAN The Piano Sings 2 Michael Nyman MNRCD131 The Piano Sings 2 features well-known music from well-known films (The Draughtsman’s Contract and The Piano), unknown music from unknown films (Conor McPherson’s The Actors and Michael Winterbottom’s Everyday) and also music from Enemy Zero (1997) which resurfaced in Michael’s soundtrack for Dziga Vertov’s Man with a Movie Camera and in his own film Nyman with a Movie Camera. PENGUIN CAFE The Red Book The Penguin Café: Neil Codling, Cass Browne, Darren Berry, Rebecca Waterworth, Andy Waterworth, Oli Langford, Des Murphy, Vincent Greene, Peter Radcliffe, Tom Chichester-Clark DPC104 Arthur Jeffes worked on a project with the International Space Orchestra and NASA Ames in 2012, out of which came the pieces Aurora and 1420, which have since been beamed into space as part of NASA’s Kepler project. These touchstones marked a ‘satellitic’ beginning for a new album, a collection of songs that would then return to earth to undertake a rich, cross-continental, musical journey. Felix MENDELSSOHN The Complete Works for Cello and Piano Marie Macleod Martin Sturfält 5060192780383 Having played hundreds of concerts together, this talented piano and cello recital duo decided to make this live recording of Mendelssohn’s complete works for cello and piano. The result is a thrilling account of the repertoire, brilliantly performed and wonderfully recorded. Robert SCHUMANN Piano Music Leon McCawley The wonderful Leon McCawley continues his exploration of 19th century repertoire for SOMM with the piano music SOMMCD 0134 of Robert Schumann, one of the greatest composers of the Romantic era. Leevi MADETOJA (1887-1947) Symphonies Nos. 1-3; Okon Fuoko Suite, Op. 58 Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra, John Storgårds ODE 1211-2 This new release completes Ondine’s two-disc survey of Madetoja’s symphonies. Considered one of Sibelius’ finest contemporaries in Finnish orchestral music, Madetoja merges the landscape and folk songs of his native province of Ostrobothnia with a French elegance (Symphony No. 3) to create a unique voice. Leevi Madetoja (1887–1947) Symphony No. 2 / Kullervo / Elegy 1. Kullervo, Symphonic Poem, Op. 15 14:13 Symphony No. 2, Op. 35 2. I. Allegro moderato – 13:23 LEEVI MADETOJA II. Andante 13:36 SYMPHONY NO. 2 III. Allegro non troppo – 9:39 KULLERVO IV. Andantino 4:53 ELEGY 3. Elegy, Op. 4/1 (First movement from the Symphonic Suite, Op. 4) 5:53 –2– Leevi Madetoja To be an orchestral composer in Finland as a contemporary of Sibelius and nevertheless create an independent composer profile was no mean feat, but Leevi Madetoja managed it. Though even he was not LEEVI MADETOJA completely immune to the influence of SYMPHONY NO. 2 his great colleague, he did find a voice for KULLERVO ELEGY himself where the elegiac nature of the landscape and folk songs of his native province of Ostrobothnia merged with a French elegance. Madetoja’s three symphonies did not follow the trail blazed by Sibelius, and another mark of his independence as a composer is that his principal works include two operas, Pohjalaisia (The Ostrobothnians, 1924) and Juha (1935), a genre that Sibelius never embraced. Madetoja emerged as a composer while still a student at the Helsinki Music Institute, when Robert Kajanus conducted his first orchestral work, elegy (1909) for strings, in January 1910. The work was favourably received and was given four further performances in Helsinki that spring. It is a melodically charming and harmonically nuanced miniature that betrays the influence of Tchaikovsky in its achingly tender tones. Later, Madetoja incorporated Elegia into his four-movement Sinfoninen sarja (Symphonic Suite, 1910), but even so it is better known as a separate number.

  • Grand Piano Catalogue
GRAND PIANO CATALOGUE GRAND PIANO CATALOGUE 2014 1 GRAND PIANO CATALOGUE GRAND PIANO The 2014 Grand Piano Catalogue marks the second year of this exciting label’s mission to source and record keyboard music that has previously remained generally undetected and undervalued, either through the promotion of works by unknown composers or little- known works by familiar ones. The last 12 months have seen a doubling in size of the label’s discography and a strengthening of its growing international reputation. The 48 discs to date have proved to be an authoritative foundation for Grand Piano’s future development and elicited an impressive cache of critical acclaim. “Anyone who is seriously interested in piano music should check out Grand Piano.” (The Listener) Collectors will appreciate the compendiums of keyboard works by individual composers: among those already available are the complete piano works of Mieczysław Weinberg, the complete piano sonatas of Christian Gottlob Neefe and Beethoven’s complete piano duets. Included in the ongoing series are the complete piano works of Camille Saint-Saëns and Alexander Tcherepnin, plus the complete piano sonatas of Nicolas Medtner. A number of composers are new to the catalogue this year, representing countries from the full breadth of Europe, and beyond. These include Arno Harutyuni Babadjanian (Armenia), Edwin York Bowen (England), Ferrucio Busoni (Italy), Dimitar Nenov (Bulgaria), Manuel María Ponce (Mexico) and Teresa Carreño (Venezuela). “The Grand Piano label continues to uncover gems of the piano repertoire.” (Fanfare) Exploring the Grand Piano label constantly throws up intriguing musical surprises, plus the visual delight of the discs’ attractive cover images, which feature either figurines by the award-winning Norwegian artist Gro Thorsen or one of Tony Price’s attractive studies in the play of light on water.

95782 The cello concerto genre has a relatively short history. Before the 19th century, the only composers a few other works, including Monn’s fine, characterful Cello Concerto in G minor. Monn died of of stature who wrote such works were Vivaldi, C.P.E. Bach, Haydn and Boccherini. Considering the tuberculosis at the age of 33. problem inherent in the cello’s lower register, the potential difficulty of projecting its tone against Joseph Haydn (1732–1809) made phenomenal contributions to the history of the symphony, the weight of an orchestra, it is rather ironic that most of the great concertos for the instrument the string quartet, the piano sonata and the piano trio. He generally found concerto form less were composed later than the Baroque or Classical periods. The orchestra of these earlier periods stimulating to his creative imagination, but he did compose several fine examples. In 1961 the was smaller and lighter – a more accommodating accompaniment for the cello – whereas during unearthing of a set of parts for Haydn’s Cello Concerto in C major in Radenín Castle (now in the 19th century the symphony orchestra was significantly expanded, so that composers had to the Czech Republic) proved to be one of the most exciting discoveries in 20th-century musicology. take more care to avoid overwhelming the soloist. Probably dating from the early 1760s, the concerto is believed to have been composed for Joseph Antonio Vivaldi (1678–1741) composed several hundred concertos while employed as a violin Weigl, principal cellist of Haydn’s orchestra. This is the more rhythmically arresting of Haydn’s teacher (and, from 1716, as ‘maestro dei concerti’) at the Venetian girls’ orphanage known as authentic cello concertos.
