DEALER INFORMATION SERVICE: NO. 265 FEBRUARY 2014 REPRESENTING TODAY’S GREAT LABELS THIS MONTH'S HIGHLIGHTS Select Music and Video Distribution Limited 3 Wells Place, Redhill, Surrey RH1 3SL Tel: 01737 645600 Fax: 01737 644065 Highlight Claudio MONTEVERDI of the month Madrigals of Love and Loss James Gilchrist Arcangelo Jonathan Cohen Gramophone Award-winning ensemble Arcangelo (in their first recording as a vocal and instrumental group) presents a selection from Monteverdi’s last three books of madrigals. These ardent and passionate works are microcosms of Monteverdi’s great operas, and among his most celebrated music. CDA68019 Franz SCHUBERT Der Wanderer and other songs Florian Boesch Roger Vignoles Florian Boesch and Roger Vignoles were shortlisted for a BBC Music Magazine award for their first Hyperion CDA68010 album (Loewe Songs and Ballads). Boesch’s warm, sensuously attractive baritone voice, first-rate diction and remarkable acting ability were enthusiastically praised. Now the duo turn to a selection of Schubert’s Lieder from the dark heart of the repertoire. Zoltán KODÁLY String Quartets Nos 1 & 2; Intermezzo; Gavotte Dante Quartet In the chamber works recorded here, spanning Kodály's career, we can hear an unwavering desire to place genuine Hungarian folk music (rather than the ‘style hongrois’ espoused by the Strauss family and many CDA67999 other composers ) within classical music traditions. Bartók wrote of his compatriot that ‘if I were to name the composer whose works are the most perfect embodiment of the Hungarian spirit, I would answer, Kodály’. Alexander ZEMLINSKY Symphony in D minor; Symphony in B flat major BBC National Orchestra of Wales Martyn Brabbins The BBC National Orchestra of Wales and Martyn Brabbins perform two works from the crucible of the Viennese fin de siècle. CDA67985 Karol SZYMANOWSKI Masques, Métopes and Études Cédric Tiberghien In Cédric Tiberghien’s first solo recording for Hyperion he embraces the sensual, crepuscular sound-world CDA67886 of Szymanowski’s piano music. Tiberghien’s expressive, mercurial, quicksilver playing with its extraordinary pianissimos and kaleidoscopic range of colour makes him an ideal performer of this repertoire. Ludwig van BEETHOVEN (1770-1827) Piano Concerto No. 3 in C minor, Op. 37 Wolfgang Amadeus MOZART (1756-1791) Piano Concerto No. 24 in C minor, K 491 Highlight Yevgeny Sudbin of the month Minnesota Orchestra, Osmo Vänskä BIS1978 The sequel to BISSACD1758 (2010), Sudbin and Vänskä go one step further and include Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 24, which is often regarded as having been the inspiration for Beethoven’s work. Ludwig van BEETHOVEN (1770-1827) The Late Quartets arranged for String Orchestra String Quartets Nos. 13-16 Camerata Nordica, Terje Tønnesen Besides providing the greater dynamic spectrum that a larger ensemble can bring to the music, Tønnesen’s BIS1096 main aim in these transcriptions has been to strengthen the contrasts between intimate passages and fuller textures. Allan PETTERSSON (1911-1980) Symphony No. 9 Norrköping Symphony Orchestra, Christian Lindberg An ongoing cycle of all Pettersson’s symphonies - Christian Lindberg and the Norrköping Symphony Orchestra have received great acclaim for previous instalments. Felix MENDELSSOHN The Complete Works for Cello and Piano Marie Macleod Martin Sturfält 5060192780383 Having played hundreds of concerts together, this talented piano and cello recital duo decided to make this live recording of Mendelssohn’s complete works for cello and piano. The result is a thrilling account of the repertoire, brilliantly performed and wonderfully recorded. Robert SCHUMANN Piano Music Leon McCawley The wonderful Leon McCawley continues his exploration of 19th century repertoire for SOMM with the piano music SOMMCD 0134 of Robert Schumann, one of the greatest composers of the Romantic era.
