    Postfeminist Double Binds: Volume 6 Number 2 How Six Contemporary Films Perpetuate the September 2009 Myth of the Incomplete Woman Samantha Senda-Cook University of Utah Sweet Home Alabama, The Wedding Planner, How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, Down With Love, Never Been Kissed, and Miss Congeniality appear to promote feminist ideals. They feature smart, successful women who are determined to excel at their careers. However, each face a truly difficult decision—the career or the man? In a modern twist on two classic double binds, these six films contrive situations that place the potential male lover in direct opposition to career advancement. In some cases, the women keep their jobs, but in all they prioritize love, specifically “true love.” Additionally, the films each emphasize some transformation that the main character must undergo before she can ultimately succeed personally and professionally. While three films require the woman to relax—not worry so much about her career—the other three depict an ugly-duckling tale. Using Gregory Bateson’s concept of the double bind, Kathleen Hall Jamieson’s articulation of the double binds that women face, and theories of postfeminism, I contend that these films attract a large number of viewers by misusing the tenets of feminism. (François Jullien 2011: 132) Even though this may go against traditional thinking, one could thus speak of an a priori prosthetics. (Bernard Stiegler 2003a) Is this still capitalism? What if it was something worse? (McKenzie Wark 2013) Audit—the ongoing evaluation of performance—began as a fairly narrow range of technical procedures in financial accounting. However, it has now expanded its range to ‘account’ for a wide range of behaviours, thoughts and even feelings, in the workplace and elsewhere. This article first suggests that audit cultures are a response to the ‘abyss of the differential.’ This is the abyss faced when too much generative difference threatens established interests, and thus everything these interests control. Such interests often face a double bind, because they also rely on exploiting generative difference and are thus fully immersed in it. Audit is seen as a useful response to this double bind—to the abyss of the differential. Audit enables both control and ongoing exploitation of the differential. This article secondly aims to summarise some of the recent discussions of audit and then develop aspects of them. Audit technics/cultures use a flexible series of control procedures that differentially declare what is (un)acceptable. The subject of alternative lives fascinated him throughout his long career and he tackled it repeatedly in his work to various degrees. But it becomes the central theme in “The Jolly Corner” (1908), a strange tale about a man who decides to go after a rather unusual type of dop- pelgänger: the self he would have been if he had stayed in his Ameri- can hometown. As we shall see, this narration of a ‘road not taken’ aspires to materialize the ‘might-have-been.’ Just like the text, which becomes a means to actually ‘take’ the road not taken, the story it is presenting and promoting is the life not lived. The American expatriate Spencer Brydon comes back to his native land after an absence of thirty-three years, to take care of his inherited property which consists of two houses. The story takes its name from the family house which is the scene where the pursuit and the final encounter with his alter ego will take place.

While Berenstain accurately identifies norms of inquiry that ought to be avoided, her account ultimately establishes more barriers to the project of resisting oppression than it removes, necessitating the development of an alternative normative framework. DOBSON University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada ABSTRACT: It has often been observed that Alice Munro is a master of narrative complexity. “The love of a good woman”, in particular, is a story that challenges conventional notions of structure in short fiction through digression or deferral, discontinuity, layering, and so on. Ross (2002) rightly observes that conventional theories of reading fail to get at the process involved in achieving successful “apprenticeship” with Munro’s short fiction. This paper explores the intricacies of Munro’s creative craft as exemplified in “The love of a good woman” and proposes an approach to facilitating students’ engagement with complex narratives. Through creative writing in a computer-based “wiki” environment, it is argued, we encourage students to undertake the project of “layering” narrative and of establishing and interrogating complex narrative relations. This creative exercise, in turn, may facilitate their understanding of short fiction such as Munro’s. KEYWORDS: Digital literacy, textuality, English education, literacy education.   • Practicing Love of God in Medieval Jerusalem, Gaul and Saxony
    he collection of essays presented in “Devotional Cross-Roads: Practicing Love of God in Medieval Gaul, Jerusalem, and Saxony” investigates test case witnesses of TChristian devotion and patronage from Late Antiquity to the Late Middle Ages, set in and between the Eastern and Western Mediterranean, as well as Gaul and the regions north of the Alps. Devotional practice and love of God refer to people – mostly from the lay and religious elite –, ideas, copies of texts, images, and material objects, such as relics and reliquaries. The wide geographic borders and time span are used here to illustrate a broad picture composed around questions of worship, identity, reli- gious affiliation and gender. Among the diversity of cases, the studies presented in this volume exemplify recurring themes, which occupied the Christian believer, such as the veneration of the Cross, translation of architecture, pilgrimage and patronage, emergence of iconography and devotional patterns. These essays are representing the research results of the project “Practicing Love of God: Comparing Women’s and Men’s Practice in Medieval Saxony” guided by the art historian Galit Noga-Banai, The Hebrew University of Jerusalem, and the histori- an Hedwig Röckelein, Georg-August-University Göttingen. This project was running from 2013 to 2018 within the Niedersachsen-Israeli Program and financed by the State of Lower Saxony.     Things within Things Possible Readings of Alice Munro’s “The Love of a Good Woman” Ulrica Skagert University of Kristianstad Abstract: Alice Munro’s “The Love of a Good Woman” is perhaps one of the most important stories in her œuvre in terms of how it accentuates the motivation for the Nobel Prize of Literature: “master of the contemporary short story.” The story was first published in The New Yorker in December 1996, and over 70 pages long it pushes every rule of what it means to be categorised as short fiction. Early critic of the genre, Edgar Allan Poe distinguished short fiction as an extremely focused attention to plot, properly defined as that to which “no part can be displaced wit- hout ruin to the whole”. Part of Munro’s art is that of stitching seemingly disparate narrative threads together and still leaving the reader with a sense of complete- ness. The story’s publication in The New Yorker included a subtitle that is not part of its appearing in the two-year-later collection. The subtitle, “a murder, a mystery, a romance,” is interesting in how it is suggestive for possible interpretations and the story’s play with genres. In a discussion of critical readings of Munro’s story, I propose that the story’s resonation of significance lies in its daring composition of narrative threads where depths of meaning keep occurring depending on what aspects one is focusing on for the moment. Further, I suggest that a sense of completion is created in tone and paralleling of imagery.
