Deepa Ranganathan A Guest in Someone Else’s House: The Construction of Asian Americans as Foreigners ABSTRACT Social workers, like many people, wrongly tend to think of Asian Americans as beings exempt from the problems of racism. The social work profession considers “race” to be a property inhering almost solely in African Americans. Meanwhile, the profession assigns the property of foreign “culture” primarily to Asian Americans. This thesis uses the work of Critical Race Theory (CRT) scholars to show that social workers, in presuming that Asian Americans are a class of people who are essentially foreign, are actually reproducing a form of exclusionist racism that Asian Americans have faced for generations. A partial solution to this problem might involve social workers’ educating themselves about way racism manifests in the lives of Asian Americans. However, this thesis relies on the work of several poststructuralist scholars to show that, to fulfill their ethical obligation to combat oppression, social workers must also know something of the way identity is constructed—how the power relations between those designated “normal” and those designated “other” mutually maintain a system of conflict and opposition that holds everyone in artificially fixed and limiting positions.

Laitin† Marie-Anne Valfort‡ February 17, 2014 Abstract There is widespread evidence that immigrants from Muslim-majority countries are discriminated against in Western Europe, relative to immigrants from European Christian-majority countries. Yet, it is not clear whether this discrimination is based on religion (Muslim), region of origin (since the bulk of Muslim-majority countries are located in regions outside Europe), or both. Relying on European Social Survey data and an identification strategy that seeks to separate religion from region of origin, our findings indicate that religion rather than region of origin explains such discrimination. Nearly a third of all Americans are of nonwhite and non-European descent. Latinos and Hispanics have recently eclipsed African Americans as the largest minority group in the United States. Between 1990 and 2000, Asians doubled the size of their population to more than 4 percent of Americans. Although immigration has altered the racial and ethnic composition of every state in the nation, surprisingly little is known about the consequences of this new heterogeneity for American politics. This book explores the impact and political consequences of immigration. After considering the organizations that mobilize new citizens to politics, the authors examine the political psychology of group consciousness for political mobiliza- tion. Finally, they consider the emerging patterns and choices of new voters. Jane Junn is Associate Professor in the Political Science Department and the Eagleton Institute of Politics at Rutgers University.     Postfeminist Double Binds: Volume 6 Number 2 How Six Contemporary Films Perpetuate the September 2009 Myth of the Incomplete Woman Samantha Senda-Cook University of Utah Sweet Home Alabama, The Wedding Planner, How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, Down With Love, Never Been Kissed, and Miss Congeniality appear to promote feminist ideals. They feature smart, successful women who are determined to excel at their careers. However, each face a truly difficult decision—the career or the man? In a modern twist on two classic double binds, these six films contrive situations that place the potential male lover in direct opposition to career advancement. In some cases, the women keep their jobs, but in all they prioritize love, specifically “true love.” Additionally, the films each emphasize some transformation that the main character must undergo before she can ultimately succeed personally and professionally. While three films require the woman to relax—not worry so much about her career—the other three depict an ugly-duckling tale. Using Gregory Bateson’s concept of the double bind, Kathleen Hall Jamieson’s articulation of the double binds that women face, and theories of postfeminism, I contend that these films attract a large number of viewers by misusing the tenets of feminism. Smith During the three decades between the end of World War I and 1950, African and West Indian scholars, professionals, university students, artists, and political activists in London forged new conceptions of community, reshaped public debates about the nature and goals of British colonialism, and prepared the way for a revolutionary and self-consciously modern African culture. Black intellectuals formed organizations that became homes away from home and centers of cultural mixture and intellectual debate, and launched publications that served as new means of voicing social commentary and political dissent. These black associations developed within an atmosphere characterized by a variety of internationalisms, including pan-ethnic movements, feminism, communism, and the socialist internationalism ascendant within the British Left after World War I. The intellectual and political context of London and the types of sociability that these groups fostered gave rise to a range of black internationalist activity and new regional imaginaries in the form of a West Indian Federation and a United West Africa that shaped the goals of anticolonialism before 1950.

Lynn: Preserving the White Man’s Republic: The Democratic Party and the Transformation of American Conservatism, 1847-1860 (Under the direction of Harry L. Watson) In the late 1840s and 1850s, the American Democratic party redefined itself as “conservative.” Yet Democrats’ preexisting dedication to majoritarian democracy, liberal individualism, and white supremacy had not changed. Democrats believed that “fanatical” reformers, who opposed slavery and advanced the rights of African Americans and women, imperiled the white man’s republic they had crafted in the early 1800s. There were no more abstract notions of freedom to boundlessly unfold; there was only the existing liberty of white men to conserve. Democrats therefore recast democracy, previously a progressive means to expand rights, as a way for local majorities to police racial and gender boundaries. In the process, they reinvigorated American conservatism by placing it on a foundation of majoritarian democracy. Empowering white men to democratically govern all other Americans, Democrats contended, would preserve their prerogatives. With the policy of “popular sovereignty,” for instance, Democrats left slavery’s expansion to territorial settlers’ democratic decision-making.
