In 1983 I wrote th at the Soviet Union was 'as much the legatee of the pr enational dyn astic st ate s of the nineteenth century as the precursor of a twenty-first century intern ationali st order.' But, havi ng traced the nationali st explosions th at de stro yed the vast polyglot an d polyethnic re al ms which were ru led fr om Vi enna, London, Constantinople, Pari s an d Mad ri d, I could not se e that the tr ai n was laid at le ast as far as Moscow. It is me lancholy consolation to ob serve that hi st o ry se ems to be bearing out the 'logic' of Imagined Communities better than its au thor managed to do. It is not only the world that has changed it s fac e over the past xi IMAGINED COMMUNITIES twelve years. The study of nationalism too has been startlingly trans­ formed - in method, scale, sophistication, and sheer quantity. In the English language alone, J.A. Armstrong's Na tions Before Na tionalism (1982), John Breuilly's Na tionalism and the State (1982), Ernest Gellner's Na tions and Na tionalism (1983), Miroslav Hroch's Social Preconditions oj Na tional Revival in Europe (1985), Anthony Smith's The Ethnic Origins oj Na tions (1986), P. Chatterjee's Na tionalist Thought and the Colonial World (1986), and Eric Hobsbawm's Na tions and Na tionalism since 1788 (1990) - to name only a few of the key texts - have, by their historical reach and theoretical power, made largely obsolete the traditional literature on the subject. In part out of these works has developed an extraordinary proliferation of historical, literary, anthropological, sociological, fem­ inist, and other studies linking the objects of these fields of enquiry to nationalism and nation. 1 To adapt Imagined Communities to the demands of these vast changes in the world and in the text is a task beyond my present means. It seemed better, therefore, to leave it largely as an 'unrestored' period piece, with its own characteristic style, silhouette, and mood. Two things give me comfort. On the one hand, the full final outcome of developments in the old socialist world remain shrouded in the ob­ scurity ahead. On the other hand, the idiosyncratic method and preoccupations of Imagined Communities seem to me still on the margins of the newer scholarship on nationalism - in that sense, at least, not fully superseded. What I have tried to do, in the present edition, is simply to correct errors of fact, conception, and interpretation which I should have avoided in preparing the original version. These corrections - in the spirit of 1983, as it were - involve some alterations of the firstedition, as well as two new chapters, which basically have the character of discrete appendices. In the main text, I discovered two serious errors of translation, at least one unfulfilled promise, and one misleading emphasis. Unable to read Spanish in 1983, I thoughtlessly relied on Leon Ma. Guerrero's English translation of Jose Rizal's No li Me Tangere, although earlier 1. It was only in 1990 that I discovered how fascinatingly corrupt Guerrero's version was. For a· long, important quotation from Otto Bauer's Die Na tionalitatenfrage und die Sozial­ demokratie I lazily relied on Oscar Jaszi's translation. More recent consultation of the German original has shown me how far Jaszi's political predilections tinted his citations. In at least. two passages I had faithlessly promised to explain why Brazilian nationalism developed so late and so idiosyncratically by comparison with those of other Latin American countries. The present text attempts to fulfil· the broken pledge. It had been part of my original plan to stress the New World origi�s of nationalism. My feeling had been that an unselfconscious provincialism had long skewed .and distorted theorizing on ·the subject. European scholars, accustomed to the conceit that every­ thing important in the modern world originated in Europe, too easily took 'second generation' ethnolinguistic nationalisms (Hun­ garian, Czech, Greek, Polish, etc.) as the starting point in their modelling, no matter whether they were ·'for' or 'against' nation­ alism. I was startled to discover, in many of the notices of Imagined Communities, that this Eurocentric provincialism remained quite undisturbed, and that the crucial chapter on the originating Americas was largely ignored. Unfortunately, I have found no better 'instant' solution to this problem than to retitle Chapter 4 as 'Creole Pioneers.' The two 'appendices' try to correct serious theoretical flaws in the first edition.2 A number of friendly critics had suggested that Chapter 7 ('The Last Wave') oversimplified the process whereby early 'Third World' nationalisms were modelled. Furthermore· the chapter did not seriously . address the question of the role of the local colonial state, rather than the metropole, in styling these nationalisms.

Benedict Anderson's tribute was delivered at the Celebration of the Life of George McTurnan Kahin, May 6, 2000, Ithaca, NY. George Kahin was a national figure, and his life and career are being recounted in major newspapers. Of this there will be much telling abroad as well. But our loss is local and felt deeply. He was the bedrock on which many of us based our professional lives. We have all been touched by his warmth, his kindness, and made better by his example of courage, integrity, and his patient devotion to our corporate life. His passing brings a chill blast of mortality, a keen apprehension of the fragility of life and the tenuousness of the threads that bind us to each other. I would remind you that a tree was planted in George's honor at the center of the university—out on the contained immensity of the Arts Quadrangle. Today, its wet black branches are bare, but burgeoning life will return with the spring. And, across the Quadrangle, the library, with shelves stretching in the deep structure of its orders, fills silently with Southeast Asian witness, a consequence, in part, of George's advocacy and stewardship with Program funds. Many more books will flow out of the quiet labor now underway at the Kahin Center for Advanced Research on Southeast Asia.

    Revolution, Reform and Regionalism in Southeast Asia Geographically, Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam are situated in the fastest growing region in the world, positioned alongside the dynamic economies of neighboring China and Thailand. Revolution, Reform and Regionalism in Southeast Asia compares the postwar political economies of these three countries in the context of their individual and collective impact on recent efforts at regional integration. Based on research carried out over three decades, Ronald Bruce St John highlights the different paths to reform taken by these countries and the effect this has had on regional plans for economic development. Through its comparative analysis of the reforms implemented by Cam- bodia, Laos and Vietnam over the last 30 years, the book draws attention to parallel themes of continuity and change. The family left China for Ireland ahead of the massive Japanese invasion of northern China in 1941, but submarine warfare in the Atlantic led them to stay in California until after the war. Anderson won scholarships to Eton and then to Cambridge, where he took a first in Classics, read widely, discovered Japanese cinema, and was radicalized in demonstrations by students from former colonies against the Anglo-French invasion of Suez. Later, he came to especially value this traditional education and the learning of languages, noting that he took his old-fashioned educa- tion for granted, having no idea that he was a member of almost the last generation to benefit from it. He attributed his success to this education and his cosmopolitan experience of marginality, as an English boy in California, an Anglo-Protestant in Catholic Ireland, and a scholarship boy among the privileged at Eton. Others were more inclined to credit his amazing ability to learn languages and immerse himself in foreign cultures and his insatiable curiosity about a wide range of topics that enabled him to see his objects of investigation in a different light.

    BENEDICTANDERSON 4 nationality as a socio-cultural concept - in the modern world everyone can, should, will 'have' a nationality, as he or she 'has' a gender - vs. the irremediable particularity of its concrete manifestations, such that, by definition, 'Greek' nationality is sui generis. (3) The 'political' power of nationalisms vs. their philosophical poverty and even incoherence. In other words, unlike most other isms, nationalism has never produced its own grand thinkers: no Hobbeses, Tocquevilles, Marxes, or Webers. This 'emptiness' easily gives rise, among cosmopolitan and polylingual intellectuals, to a certain condescension. Like Gertrude Stein in the face of Oakland, one can rather quickly conclude that ~. there is 'no there there'. It is characteristic that even so sympathetic a student of nationalism as Tom Nairn can nonetheless write that: '''Nationalism'' is the IMAGINED COMMUNITIES pathology of modern developmental history, as inescapable as "neurosis" in the individual, with much the same essential ambiguity attaching to it, a similar built-in capacity for descent into dementia, rooted in the dilemmas of help- Benedict Anderson lessness thrust upon most of the world (the equivalent of infantilism for societies) and largely incurable.'2 Part of the difficulty is that one tends unconsciously to hypostasize the existence of Nationalism-with-a-big-N (rather as one might Age-with-a-capi- tal-A) and then to classify 'it' as an ideology.     Athens Journal of Social Sciences- Volume 2, Issue 4 – Pages 285-296 The Three Faces of the Korean Nation By Étienne Girouard This article proposes a theory on how national genetics may solve the theoretical maelstrom engulfing the study of nations in Korea. The national genetics theory is firstly presented with the concepts of national genotype, national genotypic heritage, national chromosomes, national genes and national phenotypes being defined. National genetics is then applied to the heterodox case of Korea, where three different nations are often confused due to the striking resemblance between them. The themes of imperialism and political legitimacy are seen as sociopolitical chromosomes structuring Korea's continually evolving national genotype. It will be shown that these chromosomes are part of a national genotypic heritage that has framed all three national phenotypes of Korean modern history: the republican nation, the revolutionary nation and the developmental nation. Finally, this article will demonstrate how national genetics helps resolve previous antagonistic claims made about nations, nationalism and ethnicity in Korea. Keywords: elite nationalism, genetics theory, imagined communities, imperialism, Korea A Theoretical Maelstrom There are a myriad of distinctive features that help single out the Korean Peninsula as a compelling case study in the field of nations and nationalism. On one hand, proponents of ethno-symbolism see the former state of Koryo (935-1392) as a typical but rare case of a pre-modern nation (Ozkirimli and Grosby 2007: 528, Smith 1998: 190). On the other hand, primordialists, utilizing a national history and celebrating the alleged ethnic, cultural and linguistic homogeneity of a people tightly bound to its peninsula, support the argument that only one Korean nation has existed through the ages (Duncan 1998: 198).

    British Marxist Historians: An Appraisal Antony Kalashnikov Abstract This paper examines several of the leading British Marxist historians of the twentieth century and the contribution made by these Marxist historians to the field of historiography. The differences and similarities in the arguments presented by key Marxist historians is examined and critically analysed throughout this paper to identify the role these historians within the field. Introduction: In the second half of the twentieth century, Marxism became firmly integrated into the Western academic tradition as a valid and powerful mode of analysis. In 1950’s Great Britain, Marxism became particularly prevalent in the discipline of history. At least superficially, a group of historians was associated by their membership within the British Communist Party. Several critics, however, have argued that the British Marxist historians came to represent a school, of sorts, characterized by much more than paying homage to Marx and his historical materialism. Indeed, sociologist Harvey Kaye, in his book The British Marxist Historians, contends that they constitute a separate “theoretical tradition.” Specifically, he argues, they share a common theoretical problematic, historical problematic, approach to historical study (i.e. a methodology of class struggle analysis), and a contribution to British political culture.1 Social theorist Perry Anderson, for his part, also groups these Marxist Historians together, albeit indirectly, in his more negative critique of them. Particularly, he argues against their theoretical underdevelopment and lack of strategy. This essay will appraise the two scholars’ arguments for British Marxist historians’ commonality, in particular looking at the Marxist historians Edward Thompson and Eric Hobsbawm. In doing so, I will explicate Kaye’s and Anderson’s arguments, illustrating their points with examples from Thompson’s and Hobsbawm’s work.

The Mission The mission of the delegation was to: • observe the living conditions of the Khmer refugees, • boost the morale of the Khmer refugees, • encourage the struggle for freedom and peace of the Khmer refugees, • support the cooperation between the Khmer People’s National Liberation Armed Forces (KPNLAF) and the Nationalist Sihanoukian Army (ANS) in their effort to liberate Cambodia from the Vietnamese rule, and • educate the Westerners about the refugees’ plight and the Cambodian tragedy.
