Lewis A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS May 2008 Committee: Jeffrey Brown, Advisor Becca Cragin ii ABSTRACT Jeffrey Brown Advisor Through their representations of torture, 24 and Battlestar Galactica build on a wider political discourse. Although 24 began production on its first season several months before the terrorist attacks, the show has become a contested space where opinions about the war on terror and related political and military adventures are played out. The producers of Battlestar Galactica similarly use the space of television to raise questions and problematize issues of war. Together, these two television shows reference a long history of discussion of what role torture should play not just in times of war but also in a liberal democracy. This project seeks to understand the multiple ways that ideological discourses have played themselves out through representations of torture in these television programs. This project begins with a critique of the popular discourse of torture as it portrayed in the popular news media. Using an ideological critique and theories of televisual realism, I argue that complex representations of torture work to both challenge and reify dominant and hegemonic ideas about what torture is and what it does. This project also leverages post-structural analysis and critical gender theory as a way of understanding exactly what ideological messages the programs’ producers are trying to articulate.

Hemmig 2015 Abstract Like much of Subsaharan Africa, development has been an ever-present aspect to postcolonial life for the Halpulaar populations of the Fuuta Tooro region of southern Mauritania. With the collapse of locally historical modes of production by which the population formerly sustained itself, Fuuta communities recognize the need for change and adaptation to the different political, economic, social, and ecological circumstances in which they find themselves. Development has taken on a particular urgency as people look for effective strategies to adjust to new realities while maintaining their sense of cultural identity. Unfortunately, the initiatives, projects, and partnerships that have come to fruition through development have not been enough to bring improvements to the quality of life in the region. Fuuta communities find their capacity to develop hindered by three macro challenges: climate change, their marginalized status within the Mauritanian national community, and the region's unfavorable integration into the global economy by which the local markets act as backwaters that accumulate the detritus of global trade. Any headway that communities can make against any of these challenges tends to be swallowed up by the forces associated with the other challenges.

    INTRODUCTION ‘PERHAPS THE GREATEST ARTIST OF THE LOT’ By all accounts Henry Wilson was a quiet man, modest to a fault. At first sight, apart from his distinctive aquiline profile, his appearance was unremarkable. He was not widely known to the general public, and even amongst friends it was hard to get him to talk much about his own works, which were mostly unsigned. When he died in Menton, France in 1934, he was buried in a leased plot, long since obliterated. Such unassuming worldly credentials belie the powerful originality of his work and his prodigious skills as a craftsman. In dramatic architectural schemes, and in the expressiveness of his executed buildings and sculptures; in his richly evocative jewellery and fine metalwork, in inspirational lectures and writings; in all these, he displays an exceptional intensity of invention and insight. The works summon up deep-seated meanings which often surpass their material reality. They, and the thinking that underlies them, most thoroughly represent Henry Wilson. And it is through the diverse, yet linked, aspects of his creativity that his character and impact is most properly revealed. As he himself wrote in 1902 ‘design is the expression of your personality in terms of the material in which you work’.1 Janet, the astute and observant wife of Wilson’s fellow designer and ideologist C.R. Ashbee, testified to the admiration felt for Wilson in arts and crafts circles when she described a group of Art Workers’ Guild members gathering for a rehearsal of their masque Beauty’s Awakening in May 1899. THE EFFECTS OF EXTREME MEDIA ON POLITICAL BEHAVIOR, ATTITUDES, AND MEDIA SELECTION by JAMES BENJAMIN TAYLOR Under the Direction of Sean Richey ABSTRACT This dissertation examines the role of extreme media (i.e. political talk radio and cable news opinion shows) on the political attitudes of viewers and listeners. I investigate whether extreme media has both positive and negative externalities for democratic citizenship. Specif- ically, I use laboratory experiments, national survey data, and qualitative interviews to test the impact of extreme media on viewers' political knowledge, trust in government, efficacy, and political tolerance. I use laboratory experiments in controlled settings to uncover the impact of viewership on political knowledge, trust in government, and efficacy. I confirm these lab findings with the national survey data, by using propensity score matching and ordered probit models to demonstrate that exposure to extreme media produces political knowledge and efficacy, but decreases trust in government.
