Historic Environment Scotland – Scottish Charity No. SC045925 Principal Office: Longmore House, Salisbury Place, Edinburgh EH9 1SH DUNBLANE CATHEDRAL SYNOPSIS Dunblane, on the east bank of the Allan Water and possibly named after St Blane (died c.590), is believed to have been a religious centre by the 9th century. In the 12th century the bishopric was re-established and a stone cathedral church built. Comprehensive rebuilding took place after 1237, and by the 1300s the cathedral comprised an aisled nave, incorporating the original tower, an aisle-less chancel and an adjoining north range housing sacristy, chapter house and treasury. After the Protestant Reformation (1560), parochial worship was relocated to the chancel. The neglected nave fast fell into ruin. The chancel and north range were restored by James Gillespie Graham in 1816-19. Major restoration of the nave was undertaken in 1889-93 to a design by Robert Rowand Anderson. Although the cathedral is in state care, it continues as a place of worship by the Church of Scotland. Among the fine furnishings are rare late medieval canopied stalls, considered amongst the finest in Scotland. On civic occasions we are proud to speak of our citizenship of the City and Royal Burgh of Brechin ; on Saturday evenings, football fans are familiar with the varying fortunes of our Football Team, Brechin City, whose ground is known as Glebe Park (once the perquisite of the Minister of the First Charge). With a population of less than 7,000 people, we may be a small burgh, apprehensive of what the Wheatley proposals will do to our community, but both natives and incomers are proud to be Brechiners and conscious that for close on a thousand years, the spiritual centre of our community has been the Cathedral. The first reference to this centre of Christian Life and Worship is to be found in the Pictish Chronicle, when in the reign of Kenneth II (971-995), it is recorded, " Hic est qui tribuit magnum civitatem Brechne Domino." It seems likely that prior to this date there was already a religious com- munity in existence, established by the Celtic Church. We can say then that the Church in Brechin was established in the Dark Ages and some time after King Kenneth 's gift of lands to the Culdee community, the famous Round Tower of Brechin was erected about 1000 A.D. The Friends of Bruton has led a previous pilgrimage and the positive response to that trip encouraged us to organize another. Knowing that Bruton Parish Church is one of the most historic parishes in the country, you can expect an emphasis on history. Looking at our itinerary, I hope you recognize the opportunity to tell significant stories of history and faith. We will have a tour leader, who will ground us in points of interest and facts. As our spiritual guide, I will do a number of reflections to open our hearts to things of the Spirit. We are in the midst of conversations with our Church of England family for some behind the scenes peeks into the special places we are set to visit. Dimensions: 285cm (112¼") High, 95cm (37½") Wide Stock Code: 43016 History William Wilson (1905–1972) learned stained glass making in an apprenticeship with James Ballantyne, and by studying under Herbert Hendrie. In 1932 he was awarded a Carnegie Travelling Scholarship by the Royal Scottish Academy, which he used to study at Edinburgh College of Art and to travel in France, Germany, Italy and Spain. In these travels he made pen and ink drawings of Venice, and Madrid, Granada, Ronda, and Toledo. He studied printmaking under Adam Bruce Thomson and became an accomplished watercolourist. He studied further at the Royal College of Art, London, producing etchings and engravings of subjects such as "Loch Scavaig, Skye" in the 1930s. Wilson taught stained glass making at Edinburgh College of Art. He started his own studio in 1937, making stained glass windows for Canterbury Cathedral and a number of Scottish Churches. This study explores various types of secondary education that are categorised under one of two generic terms - Jewish secondary education or secondary education for Jews. The former describes institutions, offered by individual Jews, which provided a blend of religious and/or secular education. The latter focuses on non-Jewish schools which accepted Jews (and some which did not but were, nevertheless, attended by Jews). Whilst this work emphasises London and its environs, other areas of Jewish residence, both major and minor, are also investigated. -

Premo) In 2017, Dennis Hurt (Clan member #636) and his Lady Susan, who are avid participants in the Colorado Scottish / Celtic Festivals each year, traveled to the United Kingdom as many of us have over these past decades. While visiting Scotland and particularly Edinburgh, they decided to “take in” St. Giles High Kirk (Kirk meaning Church; or High Kirk meaning Cathedral, in this case) which is located on High Street (The Royal Mile) in Old Town Edinburgh. St. Giles Cathedral or High Kirk of Edinburgh is THE principal place of worship of the Church of Scotland in Edinburgh (Wikipedia online). St. Giles High Kirk today – The Royal Mile – Edinburgh While online websites have a great deal of information with photos about St. Giles High Kirk, what is important to this narrative is the fact that the Thistle Chapel, a section therein, was dedicated in 1911 to the Most AnCient anD Most Noble OrDer oF the Thistle, SCotlanD’s Foremost OrDer oF Chivalry. Again from Wikipedia: “The Most AnCient anD Most Noble OrDer oF the Thistle is an order of chivalry associated with Scotland. JOHN FOSTER DULLES PAPERS PERSONNEL SERIES The Personnel Series, consisting of approximately 17,900 pages, is comprised of three subseries, an alphabetically arranged Chiefs of Mission Subseries, an alphabetically arranged Special Liaison Staff Subseries and a Chronological Subseries. The entire series focuses on appointments and evaluations of ambassadors and other foreign service personnel and consideration of political appointees for various posts. The series is an important source of information on the staffing of foreign service posts with African- Americans, Jews, women, and individuals representing various political constituencies. Frank assessments of the performances of many chiefs of mission are found here, especially in the Chiefs of Mission Subseries and much of the series reflects input sought and obtained by Secretary Dulles from his staff concerning the political suitability of ambassadors currently serving as well as numerous potential appointees. While the emphasis is on personalities and politics, information on U.S. relations with various foreign countries can be found in this series. The Chiefs of Mission Subseries totals approximately 1,800 pages and contains candid assessments of U.S. ambassadors to certain countries, lists of chiefs of missions and indications of which ones were to be changed, biographical data, materials re controversial individuals such as John Paton Davies, Julius Holmes, Wolf Ladejinsky, Jesse Locker, William D. Pawley, and others, memoranda regarding Leonard Hall and political patronage, procedures for selecting career and political candidates for positions, discussions of “most urgent problems” for ambassadorships in certain countries, consideration of African-American appointees, comments on certain individuals’ connections to Truman Administration, and lists of personnel in Secretary of State’s office.
