Received 27 February, 2016; Accepted 14 April, 2016 This research was performed with the purpose of examining the differences of acclaim, their causes, and acclaim status of original recordings of popular songs and their cover versions rearranged in different styles. The research was conducted using the qualitative research method. The participants were asked to listen to three songs with two different cover versions of each. The researcher then asked them to complete a survey form. The research subjects were the second semester junior and senior preservice music teachers of the 2014-2015 academic year (n:49). Data from the first question and cover choices (oriented towards their musical tastes) are presented as a frequency distribution table in line with the data obtained, and the acclaim criteria and opinions on the acclaim criteria and underlying reasons for the selected pieces were analyzed using the content analysis method. According to the general conclusion of the research, when the acclaim of subjects was examined for all three pieces, it was observed that cover interpretations were preferred. Musical analysis and transcription reveal Franklin’s re-authoring techniques, which relate to rhetorical strategies of motivated rewriting, talking texts and call-and-response introduced by Henry Louis Gates, Jr. The extent of her re-authoring grants her status as owner of the song and results in a new sonic experience that can be clearly related to the cultural work the song has performed over the past 45 years. Multiple social movements claimed Franklin’s ‘Respect’ as their anthem, and her version more generally functioned as a song of empower- ment for those who have been marginalised, resulting in the song’s complex relationship with feminism. Franklin’s ‘Respect’ speaks dialogically with Redding’s version as an answer song that gives agency to a female perspective speaking within the language of soul music, which appealed to many audiences. When used in the context of music, it refers to the 1960s, a formative stage in introducing foreign pop music with Turkish lyrics into the Turkish cultural repertoire. The present study views the aranjman era, which has so far constituted a blank space, from the perspective of translation studies. It first sketches out a theoretical framework fusing Even-Zohar’s «invention», «import» and «cultural repertoire» with André Lefevere’s notions of «rewritings» and «patrons». Briefly reviewing the latest approaches in song translation studies, the study proposes subcategories to the term «rewriting» to refer to instrumentation, voice and lyrics levels as «reperforming», «resinging» and «relyricizing» respectively, which altogether enable the song to be rewritten in another language. These acts cannot be achieved in the absence of music producers, who are the «patrons» initiating the recording or «rerecording» of a song in any given music industry. From a general perspective, it was the collaboration of these patrons and rewriters that introduced first the inventions and then the imports into the Turkish pop music cultural repertoire.     How Civil Wars End How Civil Wars End Lise Morjé Howard and The International System, Norms, and the Alexandra Stark Role of External Actors Historically, civil wars were fought to the ªnish, with the complete military defeat of the losing side.1 But in the 1990s, as this article demonstrates, civil wars were more likely to end in negotiated settlements rather than victory by one side. Why? We argue that civil wars began to end in this historically distinct manner because of a fundamental change in the international norms of conºict resolution—namely, the rise of a norm of negotiated settlement. This norm arose in the context of a new international political environment dominated by U.S. unipolarity and liberal democracy; the ideas and principles of the liberal order undermined the acceptability of military victory. In the post–September 11 environment characterized by the war on terror- ism, however, the norm of negotiated settlement has been challenged by countervailing notions of appropriateness—namely, stabilization over democ- ratization and non-negotiation with terrorist groups. As a result, civil wars are ending less frequently, and less often in negotiation. The dominant inter- national political environment shapes norms of conºict resolution, which, in turn, inºuence how civil wars end.     Three Narratives of Civil War: Recurrence, Remembrance and Reform from Sulla to Syria† DAVID ARMITAGE Department of History, Harvard University For most of their history, from the ancient world until the nineteenth century, civil wars were a subject primarily for orators, poets, historians and novelists. They have been of pressing concern to lawyers for barely a hundred and fifty years, for social scientists only since the 1960s and for literary scholars mostly during the twenty-first century. Civil wars have accordingly been absent from social theory and from interdisciplinary study more generally: there is as yet no great treatise on civil war to sit alongside Clausewitz’s On War or Arendt’s On Revolution, for example.1 Civil War and Narrative is therefore especially welcome for joining fields that have been put asunder and for bringing practitioners and scholars together to examine the centrality of narratives to experiences of civil war from the mid-seventeenth century to contemporary Rwanda and South Sudan, among other locales torn by civil war. I have argued elsewhere that the experience of civil war—the efforts to understand it, to ameliorate it and even to prevent it—have shaped conceptions of community, authority and sovereignty and continue to inform them to this day. Without the challenge of civil war, I contend, our conceptions of politics, sovereignty, revolution, international law, cosmopolitanism and globalisation would have been very different, even poorer.2 Indeed, civil war may have done more than war to shape our conceptions of politics—“the continuation of civil war,” in Foucault’s teasing revision of Clausewitz—than war itself.3 † This essay has benefited from the comments of audiences in London, Berlin, New Haven and Athens.
