TRI ŠALAMUNOVE PARODIČNE SATIRE IN NJIHOV KONTEKST Marjan Dolgan Inštitut za slovensko literaturo in literarne vede ZRC SAZU, Ljubljana Sredi šestdesetih let 20. stoletja so v zgodnji liriki Tomaža Šalamuna na stale tri pesmi, ob katerih je mogoče opazovati recepcijo parodije, pred vsem pa satire v totalitarnem, komunističnem sistemu. Ta družbenopoli tične satire v literaturi ni dovoljeval, zato je prvo pesem kriminaliziral in pesnika spravil v zapor, kar je edinstven primer v zgodovini slovenske literature. Druga satirična pesem je ostala v senci prve. Tretja pesem pa je parodično in satirično izrabila časnikarski umetnostnozgodovinski tekst, toda to pesnikovo dejanje je povzročilo samo časnikarjev užaljen javni odmev, vendar nobenih sankcij, kajti časnikar ni bil komunistični politični veljak. Three parodic satires by Tomaž Šalamun. Three early poems by Tomaž Šalamun from the mid-1960s give us an opportunity to examine the re- ception o f parody, and particularly satire in the totalitarian, communist regime. The regime did not allow socio-political satire in literature: it criminalized the first poem and imprisoned the poet, and that is an un- precedented case in the history o f Slovenian literature. The second sati- rical poem remained in the shadow of the first one. The third poem used parodically and satirically a newspaper article on art history, but only brought about an offended public response by the journalist and no sanctions, because the journalist was not a notable communist po- litician. Meje parodije in satire Literarni teoretiki opredeljujejo parodijo kot literarni tekst, ki delno ali v celoti smeši kak drug tekst.1 Vendar povezava obeh besedil ni nekaj samoumevnega, saj obstaja samo takrat, ko jo bralec zazna.

  • Téa Obreht E Sara Nović: L'esotico Alla Balcanica
e-ISSN 2499-1562 ISSN 2499-2232 Annali di Ca’ Foscari. Serie occidentale Vol. 53 – Settembre 2019 Téa Obreht e Sara Nović: l’esotico alla balcanica Olivera Miok Università Ca’ Foscari Venezia, Italia Abstract In the contemporary literary universe, where the ‘commercial pole’ of liter- ary field prevails over the ‘autonomous’ one, according to the dichotomy introduced by Pierre Bourdieu and furtherly developed by Pascale Casanova, the phenomena of so-called ‘world fiction’, has been becoming increasingly widespread. Considering that many readers read the works of fiction in order to experience the Other and the Alterity, the writers originating from or somehow related to peripheral cultures are expected to represent their cultures. The value of authenticity is attributed to their representations, even if the author’s autonomy is significantly limited by the rules of the chosen genre (‘world fiction’), and of the literary field they are trying to penetrate. Starting from these premises and focusing on the extraordinary success of two American writers of Balkan origin, Tea Obreht and Sara Nović, in this paper I will try to provide some answers to the following questions: what is the expected image of the Balkan in the USA literary field? Is the discourse of balcanism still present? And why do these images, although fictional, have an importance for the real world? Keywords Commercial pole. Literary field. The Balkans. Téa Obreht. • Informacija Za Medije

  • I PRACTICAL MAGIC: MAGICAL REALISM and the POSSIBILITIES
i PRACTICAL MAGIC: MAGICAL REALISM AND THE POSSIBILITIES OF REPRESENTATION IN TWENTY-FIRST CENTURY FICTION AND FILM by RACHAEL MARIBOHO DISSERTATION Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at The University of Texas at Arlington August, 2016 Arlington, Texas Supervising Committee: Wendy B. Faris, Supervising Professor Neill Matheson Kenneth Roemer Johanna Smith ii ABSTRACT: Practical Magic: Magical Realism And The Possibilities of Representation In Twenty-First Century Fiction And Film Rachael Mariboho, Ph.D. The University of Texas at Arlington, 2016 Supervising Professor: Wendy B. Faris Reflecting the paradoxical nature of its title, magical realism is a complicated term to define and to apply to works of art. Some writers and critics argue that classifying texts as magical realism essentializes and exoticizes works by marginalized authors from the latter part of the twentieth-century, particularly Latin American and postcolonial writers, while others consider magical realism to be nothing more than a marketing label used by publishers. These criticisms along with conflicting definitions of the term have made classifying contemporary works that employ techniques of magical realism a challenge. My dissertation counters these criticisms by elucidating the value of magical realism as a narrative mode in the twenty-first century and underlining how magical realism has become an appealing means for representing contemporary anxieties in popular culture. To this end, I analyze how the characteristics of magical realism are used in a select group of novels and films in order to demonstrate the continued significance of the genre in modern art. I compare works from Tea Obreht and Haruki Murakami, examine the depiction of adolescent females in young adult literature, and discuss the environmental and apocalyptic anxieties portrayed in the films Beasts of the Southern Wild, Take iii Shelter, and Melancholia.
