    BOOK REVIEWS 835 WEB OF HATE: INSIDE CANADA'S FAR RIGHT NETWORK, by Warren Kinsella (Toronto: HarperCollins Publishers, 1994) [The antiscmite] is a man who is afraid ... of himself, of his conscience, his freedom, of his instincts, of his responsibilities, of solitude, of change, of society and the world ... Antisemitism, in a word, is fear of man's fate. The antisemite is the man who wants to be pitiless stone, furious torrent, devastating lightning: in short, everything but a man. 1 Warren Kinsella's message in Web of Hate'- is that racism is alive, well, and growing in Canada. Kinsella focuses on white men who hate. It is difficult to define those whom they hate: they hate all who are not like them; they hate people of colour and people who do not share their language or traditions; but, most of all, they hate the Jewish community. Anti-semiti~m seems to be the symbol of their racism, the banner under which they march. While Web of Hate should interest the general reader, it is, in many ways, a book for lawyers. Lawyers both historical 3 and contemporary 4 populate its pages. The book relates technical evidential issues that arose in hate crime trials, including a "present memory refreshed" issue in the trial of a Manitoba Klan leader; the qualification of an "expert" in the Keegstra trial; and a false distinction Doug Christie sought to draw in the Finta trial respecting the weight of testimony taken on oath and on affirmation. 5 Kinsella also poses the problem of adapting existing hate legislation and its enforcement to new computer technology, particularly to the transmission of hate literature by electronic mail from the United States to Canada.6 Despite its legal appeal, Web of Hate is primarily a work of journalism.

Drobnicki This bibliography is a supplement to three earlier ones published in the March 1994, Decem- ber 1996, and September 1998 issues of the Bulletin of Bibliography. During the intervening time. Holocaust revisionism has continued to be discussed both in the scholarly literature and in the mainstream press, especially owing to the libel lawsuit filed by David Irving against Deb- orah Lipstadt and Penguin Books. The Holocaust deniers, who prefer to call themselves “revi- sionists” in an attempt to gain scholarly legitimacy, have refused to go away and remain as vocal as ever— Bradley R. Smith has continued to send revisionist advertisements to college newspapers (including free issues of his new publication. The Revisionist), generating public- ity for his cause. Holocaust-denial, which will be used interchangeably with Holocaust revisionism in this bib- liography, is a body of literature that seeks to “prove” that the Jewish Holocaust did not hap- pen. Although individual revisionists may have different motives and beliefs, they all share at least one point: that there was no systematic attempt by Nazi Germany to exterminate Euro- pean Jewry.

    Preaching Premiers: The Political and Religious Errands of William Aberhart and Ernest Manning1 BRIAN FROESE Canadian Mennonite University In July 1932 William Aberhart, principal of Crescent View High School in Calgary, arrived in Edmonton, as he did every July, to mark exams. At these annual grading sessions Aberhart regularly met with a chemistry teacher, Charles Morton Scarborough, of Edmonton. Scarborough was an avid reader of Major C.H. Douglas’ social credit theories and, while grading exams, would extol the virtues of social credit, attempting in vain to attract Aberhart to his view. However, 1932 was different from other summers. That July Aberhart arrived in Edmonton in an unusually sullen mood as the economic depression and severe drought were seriously grinding on the Albertan economy. He watched helplessly as the graduates of his school could not find work. One graduating student even committed suicide that spring.2 Aberhart, like many others, saw his income slashed as the Canadian jobless rate hit 20% and Albertan incomes declined overall by 62% from 1928 to 1932, second only to Saskatchewan at 72%. Private Albertan debt climbed to the highest level in Canada.3 Even military enlistment was affected as Albertan young men were allegedly rejected at an exaggerated rate on account of rickets caused by malnourishment.4 Alberta was at the time a rural society, and as mortgage rates on farms and equipment rose, many could not make the interest payments. The cities were no better as 15% of Edmontonians and 13% of Calgarians lived on the relief rolls. Relief numbers would be higher but single men were not counted, being sent to work camps, and many central Europeans if not deported were Historical Papers 2014: Canadian Society of Church History 82 Preaching Premiers simply cut from the rolls.5 Aberhart was also very busy.

    TILBURG UNIVERSITY UNIVERSITY OF TRENTO MSc Sociology An integrated and dynamic approach to the life cycle of populist radical right parties: the case of Lega Nord Supervisors: Dr Koen Abts Prof. Mario Diani Candidate: Alessandra Lo Piccolo 2017/2018 1 Abstract: This work aims at explaining populist radical right parties’ (PRRPs) electoral success and failure over their life-cycle by developing a dynamic and integrated approach to the study of their supply-side. For this purpose, the study of PRRPs is integrated building on concepts elaborated in the field of contentious politics: the political opportunity structure, the mobilizing structure and the framing processes. This work combines these perspectives in order to explain the fluctuating electoral fortune of the Italian Lega Nord at the national level (LN), here considered as a prototypical example of PRRPs. After the first participation in a national government (1994) and its peak in the general election of 1996 (10.1%), the LN electoral performances have been characterised by constant fluctuations. However, the party has managed to survive throughout different phases of the recent Italian political history. Scholars have often explained the party’s electoral success referring to its folkloristic appeal, its regionalist and populist discourses as well as the strong leadership of Umberto Bossi. However, most contributions adopt a static and one-sided analysis of the party performances, without integrating the interplay between political opportunities, organisational resources and framing strategies in a dynamic way. On the contrary, this work focuses on the interplay of exogenous and endogenous factors in accounting for the fluctuating electoral results of the party over three phases: regionalist phase (1990-1995), the move to the right (1998-2003) and the new nationalist period (2012-2018).

    Quando Pivetti sloggiò Sironi. “Discriminazione erotica e non politica” L’intrigante racconto che qui ha fatto Franco Miracco sul restauro del grande affresco (“L’Italia tra le arti e le scienze”) di Mario Sironi mi ha fatto tornare alla mente un episodio di cui fu vittima non solo il grande pittore che fu tra gli iniziatori del movimento artistico del Novecento ma, con lui, tutte o quasi le grandi firme dell’arte del secolo breve. Tutto accadde improvvisamente, all’indomani di quel 15 aprile 1994 quando, per uno di quei paradossi del contrappasso, la presidenza della camera, dopo appena due anni (causa scioglimento anticipato della legislatura) era passata da Giorgio Napolitano a Irene Pivetti, ventinove anni, prima legislatura, leghista. Berlusconi aveva vinto le elezioni grazie anche ai voti leghisti e restituì la cortesia con uno spropositato regalo a Bossi che al più alto scranno di Montecitorio piazzò la sua figlioccia-rivelazione. Che si tradusse in un torto alla camera: forse neppure quei due immaginavano che la terza carica dello Stato sarebbe finita nelle mani di una matricola integrista, austera nei suoi tailleurini che lasciavano scoperta solo quella parte del collo sul quale doveva brillare sempre la croce di Lorena. Ma, quel che più conta, una ragazza del tutto ignara dei meccanismi, delle regole, persino del bon ton parlamentare: poco male, l’importante era che sul ponte di comando ci fosse un garante leghista dei desiderata del Cavaliere. Il questionario è stato uno dei concreti strumenti attraverso cui la popolazione ha contribuito attivamente al progetto, indicando i caratteri significativi e distintivi del proprio territorio, dando luce a ciò che purtroppo non esiste più, ma merita di essere ricordato, nonché a ciò che merita di essere conservato, valorizzato o addirittura trasformato.
