A survey of Lord Howe Island Coleoptera was conducted by a team from the Australian Museum and the Natural History Museum of Denmark (University of Copenhagen), in February 2017. The primary purpose of the survey was to assess the status of larger species, with the assumption that these are more vulnerable to predation by the introduced rodent Rattus rattus. Critical size was arbitrarily designated 1 cm or more in length. The 32 large species collected are listed here with comments on both their status on the islands and their taxonomy. Nine of these species are newly recorded from the island. The small number of large beetle species collected by a second Australian Museum group working on Balls Pyramid, 22 km from the main island, is also included here. The cerambycid Oricopis insulana (Olliff, 1889) is recorded for the first time since its original collection in the early 1880s. Keywords: Lord Howe Island; Coleoptera Reid, Chris A. At the time of the visit, this drought had lasted for almost 3 months (Anonymous, 2018a). Sites such as Stephens Reserve, which had been prolific for foliaceous and leaf litter Coleoptera in 2000–2003, were extremely depauperate. However the two southern mountains were still receiving some rain and cloud cover, providing damp conditions. We therefore decided to concentrate our collecting efforts on sites from Intermediate Hill southwards. We also made a day visit to Blackburn Island at the edge of the lagoon, which is rat-free. Balls Pyramid. None of the authors visited Balls Pyramid. Instead, because of the nature of the terrain, a climbing expedition was organised which stayed on Balls Pyramid from 21 March 2017 to 26 March 2017. The climbers were given basic training in searching for insects and were accompanied by one of our colleagues from the Australian Museum, the terrestrial gastropod taxonomist Frank Köhler. The climbers took samples of low vegetation for sifting by Köhler and also went spotlighting at night. Balls Pyramid had also suffered from drought and conditions were extremely dry

They were arrested at the Australian Perth airport in April, 2008 for attempting to smuggle 1350 rare dead beetles out of the country as they were about to board a flight to the United States. The two individuals were only identified as by their age: one, 62 years old from Naples, Florida, and the other, 63 years old from Cambridge, Massachusetts. They were charged with exporting a regulated native species without a permit. Australian Customs officers acted on a tip from the public and stopped the men from boarding a flight to the United States. Customs officials allegedly found 1350 mostly native tiger beetles in glass vials of alcohol, concealed in empty plastic yogurt containers in the men’s luggage. A similar incident occurred in December 2002. Customs officials stopped two men from Nara Prefecture, Japan, aged 48 and 33, in an attempt to smuggle more than more than 600 rare stag beetles and 400 other insects out of Australia in cereal boxes and biscuit packets. The incident occurred at Sydney's Kingsford Smith Airport as the men attempted to board a flight to Thailand. About two-thirds of the specimens were alive. The men were charged with matters relating to the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999.

However, the degree and nature of contemporaneity in beetle and angiosperm diversi- fication remain unclear. Here we present a large-scale molecular phylogeny for weevils (herbivorous beetles in the superfamily Curculionoidea), one of the most diverse lineages of insects, based on Ϸ8 kilobases of DNA sequence data from a worldwide sample including all families and subfamilies. Estimated divergence times derived from the combined molecular and fossil data indicate diversification into most families occurred on gymnosperms in the Jurassic, beginning Ϸ166 Ma. Subsequent colonization of early crown-group angiosperms occurred during the Early Cretaceous, but this alone evidently did not lead to an immediate and ma- jor diversification event in weevils. Comparative trends in weevil diversification and angiosperm dominance reveal that massive EVOLUTION diversification began in the mid-Cretaceous (ca. 112.0 to 93.5 Ma), when angiosperms first rose to widespread floristic dominance. These and other evidence suggest a deep and complex history of coevolution between weevils and angiosperms, including codiver- sification, resource tracking, and sequential evolution.

Our relationship with insects has been on display throughout the history of art, sometimes explicitly, but frequently in inconspicuous ways. This is because artists can depict insects overtly, but they can also allude to insects conceptually, or use insect products in a purely utilitarian manner. Insects themselves can serve as art media, and artists have explored or exploited insects for their products (silk, wax, honey, propolis, carmine, shellac, nest paper), body parts (e.g., wings), and whole bodies (dead, alive, individually, or as collectives). This review surveys insects and their products used as media in the visual arts, and considers the untapped potential for artistic exploration of media derived from insects. The history, value, and ethics of “insect media art” are topics relevant at a time when the natural world is at unprecedented risk. INTRODUCTION The value of studying cultural entomology and insect art No review of human culture would be complete without art, and no review of art would be complete without the inclusion of insects. Cultural entomology, a field of study formalized in 1980 (43), and ambitiously reviewed 35 years ago by Charles Hogue (44), clearly illustrates that artists have an inordinate fondness for insects.

    Palm Conservation – Palm Specialist Group Lepidorrhachis mooreana (H. Wendl. & Drude) O. F. Cook Status: Not Evaluated in IUCN Red List. Vulnerable according to Dowe in Johnson (1996). Preliminary evaluation based on IUCN 2001 criteria: Endangered (EN B1a,bv) Common name Little Mountain Palm. Natural range Lepidorrhachis mooreana is restricted to the summits of Mt. Gower (875 m) and Mt. Lidgbird (777 m) on the remote Lord Howe Island. It occurs only above 750 m in dwarf mossy forest that dominates the summit plateau of Mt. Gower and the narrow summit ridge of Mt. Lidgbird. This forest is home to numerous remarkable endemic species including the pumpkin tree (Negria rhabdothamnoides), an arborescent member of the Gesneriaceae, and Dracophyllum fitzgeraldii (Ericaceae). It is also the primary nesting locality of the providence petrel (Pterodroma solandri) and is a stronghold for the woodhen (Tricholimnas sylvestris), an endemic member of the rail family that was recently rescued from the brink of extinction. However, less that 0.5 km2 of Lord Howe’s total surface area of 12 km2 is found above 750 m. The total area of suitable habitat available to Lepidorrhachis is thus extremely limited. Recognition characteristics Lepidorrhachis is very easily distinguished from the two other endemic palm genera on Lord Howe Island, Howea and Hedyscepe. It is a short solitary palm with a stem that rarely exceeds 2 m in height. It has stiff, arching leaves with short, deeply split leaf sheaths that do not form a distinct crownshaft. The sheaths are also covered with buff indumentum. Its bushy inflorescences are born below the leaves and are unisexual, both male and female inflorescences occurring on the same plant.
