And to all who, in some way or another, have participated in the construction of this work, my sincere thanks. vi ABSTRACT THE POCAHONTAS NARRATIVES IN THE ERA OF THE ROMANTIC REPRESENTATIONS OF THE NATIVE AMERICANS AND THEIR INFLUENCE ON THE CONSTRUCTION OF AN AMERICAN NATIONAL IDENTITY MARIA DO SOCORRO BAPTISTA BARBOSA UNIVERSIDADE FEDERAL DE SANTA CATARINA 2004 SUPERVISING PROFESSOR: ANELISE REICH CORSEUIL This dissertation analyses five literary texts about Pocahontas and some of the visual representations about the Native American girl, which were produced during American Romanticism comparing / contrasting these texts with the founding narratives of James Fenimore Cooper, The Last of the Mohicans and The Pioneers , as well as with two other novels of the same period, Catherine Maria Sedgwick’s Hope Leslie and Lydia Maria Child’s Hobomok. The objective of this research is to show that the Romantic narratives on Pocahontas are important for the definition of an American national identity through the discussion of themes like miscegenation, liminal figures and the captivity narratives inserted in these texts. In order to make such analysis, this dissertation begins with a discussion of the historical aspects concerning the story of Pocahontas, then a survey about the theoretical background, dealing with the theories on nation and national identity of Ernest Renan, Benedict Anderson and Homi Bhabha. The theoretical chapter is followed by a comparative / contrastive analysis of the texts, including the visual representations, which concludes with the idea that Cooper’s narratives portray a traditional view of the American nation, while the Pocahontas textual and visual narratives give a different view of it. This analysis also led this dissertation to conclude that the story of Pocahontas has had a great influence on the construction of a national identity in the beginning of the nineteenth century, the moment when the American nation was establishing itself as a new one. The Pocahontas narratives do not deal with nation and national identity in the same way the other narratives do, but they are important as a way of establishing an alternative view of what it means to be an American. Nº. de Páginas: 247 Nº. de Palavras: 74.500 vii RESUMO Esta tese analisa cinco textos literários sobre Pocahontas e algumas representações visuais sobre a garota nativa americana produzidos durante o período romântico, comparando / contrastando tais textos com as narrativas de fundação de James Fenimore Cooper, The Last of the Mohicans e The Pioneers , bem como com dois outros romances do mesmo período, Hope Leslie , de Catherine Maria Sedgwick, e Hobomok , de Lydia Maria Child. O objetivo desta pesquisa é mostrar que as narrativas românticas sobre Pocahontas são também importantes para a definição de uma identidade nacional americana através da discussão de temas como miscigenação, figuras de borda e narrativas de cativos inseridas nesses textos. Inicialmente a tese apresenta uma discussão sobre os aspectos históricos referentes à história de Pocahontas, sendo feito um levantamento do referencial teórico, através das teorias sobre nação e identidade nacional de Ernest Renan, Benedict Anderson e Homi Bhabha. Dessa forma, há uma análise comparativa / contrastiva dos textos , incluindo as representações visuais, que leva à conclusão que as narrativas de Cooper retratam uma visão tradicional da nação americana, enquanto que as narrativas textuais e visuais de Pocahontas proporcionam uma visão diferente da nação. Essa análise também permite concluir que a história de Pocahontas teve uma grande influência na construção da identidade nacional no começo do século dezenove, no momento em que a nação americana estava se estabelecendo como uma nova nação. As narrativas de Pocahontas não tratam nação e identidade nacional do mesmo modo que as outras narrativas, mas são importantes como uma forma de estabelecer uma visão dos possíveis significados de identidade americana.     University of Dubuque / Charles C. Myers Library INVENTORY OF AMERICAN SHEET MUSIC (1844 – 1949) May 17, 2004 Introduction The Charles C. Myers Library at the University of Dubuque has a collection of 573 pieces of American sheet music (of which 17 are incomplete) housed in Special Collections and stored in acid free folders and boxes. The collection is organized in three categories: African American Music, Military Songs, and Popular Songs. There is also a bound volume of sheet music and a set of The Etude Music Magazine (32 items from 1932-1945). The African American music, consisting of 28 pieces, includes a number of selections from black minstrel shows such as “Richards and Pringle’s Famous Georgia Minstrels Songster and Musical Album” and “Lovin’ Sam (The Sheik of Alabami)”. There are also pieces of Dixieland and plantation music including “The Cotton Field Dance” and “Massa’s in the Cold Ground”. There are a few pieces of Jazz music and one Negro lullaby. The group of Military Songs contains 148 pieces of music, particularly songs from World War I and World War II. Different branches of the military are represented with such pieces as “The Army Air Corps”, “Bell Bottom Trousers”, and “G. I. Jive”. A few of the delightful titles in the Military Songs group include, “Belgium Dry Your Tears”, “Don’t Forget the Salvation Army (My Doughnut Girl)”, “General Pershing Will Cross the Rhine (Just Like Washington Crossed the Delaware)”, and “Hello Central! Give Me No Man’s Land”. There are also well known titles including “I’ll Be Home For Christmas (If Only In my Dreams)”.

Where did he find words like "the pursuit of happiness?" He greatly respected John Locke, whose Second Treatise of Civil Government (see, for example, chapter 2, section 5) addresses mankind's natural rights of life, liberty and the pursuit of property. He thought Discourses Concerning Government (by Algernon Sidney) - which disputes the "natural power" of kings - "is probably the best elementary book of the principles of government." (See Jefferson's December 13, 1804 letter to Mason Weems.) And ... he admired the philosophy of Scotsman Henry Home (Lord Kames) whose book of essays on morality is one of the few which Jefferson personally annotated. Widely read, Jefferson absorbed the concepts of such writers and merged what he found useful with his own thinking.

The painting depicts three generations of Americans fighting for their new nation’s freedom, one of whom is marching along though slightly wounded in battle. Willard’s powerful portrayal of the strength and determination of the American people in the face of overwhelming odds inspired millions.     GEORGE WASHINGTON: A NEW MAN FOR A NEW CENTURY By Barry Schwartz George Washington never tolerated the notion, flaunted by some of his successors in the Presidential chair that the voice of the people, whatever its tone or its message, is the voice of God; nor was his political philosophy summed up in “keeping his ear to the ground, ” in order to catch from afar the ramblings of popular approval or dissent.... Will any one say that there is no need of such men now, or that the common people would not hear them gladly if once it were known that they dwelt among us? —The Nation, 18891 Every conception of the past is construed from the standpoint of the concerns and needs of the present.”2 Could the sociologist George Herbert Mead’s statement be applied to George Washington at the 1899 centennial of his death? Was Washington the same man at the turn of the twentieth century, when America was becoming an industrial democracy, as he was at the turn of the nineteenth, when the nation was still a rural republic? The title of the present essay suggests that the question has already been answered, but the matter is more complex than that. Because any historical object appears differently against a new background, Washington’s character and achievements necessarily assumed new meaning from the Jacksonian era and Civil War through the Industrial Revolution. Washington’s changing image, however, is only one part of this story. Focusing on the first two decades of the twentieth century, the other part of the story—“Washington’s unchanging image”—must also be considered.

SPRAGG Chronology Part 1 - Chapter 1 Updated February 5, 2021 “I’ll Never Say Never Again” “The Brothers” Jimmy and Tommy Dorsey The Dorsey Brothers’ Orchestra opened at the Glen Island Casino, New Rochelle, New York on May 15, 1935. Many celebrities attended the successful opening night and the band was in top form. All signs pointed to a successful summer season and further sales of more records. In addition, the Glen Island Casino was wired for numerous nationwide radio broadcasts. However, an undercurrent of tension existed between the brothers. May 30, 1935, during the Decoration Day holiday weekend (now known as Memorial Day), the situation came to a head. As Tommy led the band into the tune “I’ll Never Say “Never Again” Again”, the vocal trio of Roc Hillman, Skeets Herfurt and Don Matteson were approaching the microphone. They remembered hearing Jimmy say something like “Hey, Mac, that’s a little fast, isn’t it?” Tommy reportedly replied, “You want to take over? It’s all yours” and he walked off the bandstand before the audience at the Glen Island Casino. By late July Tommy reluctantly returned to finish the engagement with Jimmy and the band at the urging of Tommy Rockwell and a threat by Michael DeZutter, owner of the Glen Island Casino, to nullify the Dorsey Brothers’ Orchestra contract for the remainder of the engagement. Cork O’Keefe unsuccessfully tried to reconcile the brothers. Tommy refused to work with his brother and the Dorsey Brothers’ Orchestra became Jimmy Dorsey and his Orchestra.
