JAN MALEN PRODUCER/SHOW DIRECTOR/CHOREOGRAPHER AT JAN MALAN UMZINGELI PRODUCTIONS Namibian-born, Jan Malan, director of Umzingeli Productions, is one of the leading show producers. ‘Umzingeli’ means ‘hunter-gatherer’ in Xhosa and Zulu, as the company prides itself on finding and nurturing fashion and beauty talent that hails from Africa. Since starting his show production career in 1985, his momentous work, energy and positivity towards the indus- try has led him to stage high profile productions in 20 countries spread over four continents. Using his powerful knowledge of the events industry, he brainstorms truly innovative concepts and execute them professionally with an enthusiasm that can only be described as electric. His endeavors have not only highlighted the beautiful women of Africa, but also exposed Africa’s fashion talent to the world. Malan pioneered “Africa Designs” for M-Net and AngloGold, a pan – African fashion designer competition, in the year 2000. This was the first time that African designers showed on schedule at New York Fashion Week in a group show. Following this international milestone, Malan staged five more shows for designers of African descent on schedule at the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in New York between 2001 and 2012. Noticing his talent for organization and eye for detail he was asked to serve as a venue manager for IMG in 2001 and 2002 under the guidance of New York Fashion Week founder, Fern Mallis. Not one to sit back, he applied his new knowledge and magic to the “Fairlady South African Fashion Awards” (The Catherine’s) in 2003 and subsequently won a Golden Loerie (The South African Advertising Awards) for it. But regardless of an impressive client list, which includes names such as Elton John and Tyra Banks, Malan has continued his passion for charity work giving of his time to produce shows for the Witwatersrand Hospice, The Organ Donor Foundation, The South African Federation for Mental Health and most recently, United Colours of Fashion in New York. The organization saw fit to honor him with a “Producer of the Year Award” for 2012. Some of his proudest moments includes being appointed as a goodwill ambassador and show director for Sun International’s “Positive Rocks”, official producer for the “Catwalk the World” initiative by the UN World Food Programme and his current membership of the “36 Boutiques Style Council,” South Africa’s premier online retailer based in Cape Town. In 2012 he superbly produced 10 events for Mercedes-Benz that was held throughout South Africa. He returned to New York to stage a milestone standalone show for David Tlale on schedule at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week. The year is not over yet! You still have time to make good on this year's resolutions and to get a head start on your goals for 2013. These months are a great time to exercise outdoors and enjoy cooler temperatures. Discover park trails and take in some new scenery, whether you're walking, hiking, biking, rowing, or enjoying any other outdoor activity. Try kayaking or canoeing for an excellent whole-body workout and a great change of pace. Remember, it doesn't have to seem like exercise to be a great work- out. Even raking leaves or doing outdoor yard work is a great way to get the heart pumping and burn calories. Are you geared up for the fall premieres of your favorite television shows? While you watch, do standing lunges, triceps dips off the couch, or lift weights. During commercials, do push-ups, planks, or stretch. In a one-hour show, you probably have close to 20 minutes worth of commercials when you could be working out. The best way to enjoy fall is to exercise outdoors, but it is getting darker earlier and staying dark later in the morning, so be smart and safe.

  • How American Idol Constructs Celebrity, Collective Identity, and American Discourses
AMERICAN IDEAL: HOW AMERICAN IDOL CONSTRUCTS CELEBRITY, COLLECTIVE IDENTITY, AND AMERICAN DISCOURSES A Dissertation Submitted to the Temple University Graduate Board In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy By Amanda Scheiner McClain May, 2010 i © Copyright 2010 by Amanda Scheiner McClain All Rights Reserved ii ABSTRACT This dissertation is a three-pronged study examining American themes, celebrity, and collective identity associated with the television program American Idol. The study includes discourse analyses of the first seven seasons of the program, of the season seven official American Idol message boards, and of the 2002 and 2008 show press coverage. The American themes included a rags-to-riches narrative, archetypes, and celebrity. The discourse-formed archetypes indicate which archetypes people of varied races may inhabit, who may be sexual, and what kinds of sexuality are permitted. On the show emotional exhibitions, archetypal resonance, and talent create a seemingly authentic celebrity while discourse positioning confirms this celebrity. The show also fostered a complication-free national American collective identity through the show discourse, while the online message boards facilitated the formation of two types of collective identities: a large group of American Idol fans and smaller contestant-affiliated fan groups. Finally, the press coverage study found two overtones present in the 2002 coverage, derision and awe, which were absent in the 2008 coverage. The primary reasons for this absence may be reluctance to criticize an immensely popular show and that the American Idol success was no longer surprising by 2008. By 2008, American Idol was so ingrained within American culture that to deride it was to critique America itself.
