  • Advanced Technologies Management for Retailing: Frameworks and Cases
An Excellent Addition to Your Library! Released: June 2011 Advanced Technologies Management for Retailing: Frameworks and Cases Eleonora Pantano (University of Calabria, Italy) and Harry Timmermans (Eindhoven University of Technology, The Netherlands) The application of advanced technologies to point of sale systems is a promising and relatively unexplored field of study, in particular when considering the introduction of digital content and technologies allowing consumers to inter- act with products in new ways. Many e-retailers already exploit the opportunities offered by interactive technologies, such as 3D virtual models, in order to enhance consumers shopping experience. Their use in stores, however, is still limited. The development and use of new shopping assistants for supporting and influencing consumers during their shopping experience plays a key role for both retailers and researchers. Advanced Technologies Management for Retailing: Frameworks and Cases contributes to our understanding of applications of new technologies and their impact on the design and development of point of sale systems and on consumers’ behavior. This volume covers a large range of topics that contribute to understanding consumers’ behavior in new computer-aided retailing environments, and how this influences buying behavior while providing useful knowledge on the management of these new technologies and on the management of the digital contents as a reliable teaching resource for teachers and researchers. Topics Covered: • Changing In-Store Consumers’

  • Mapping Excellence in National Research Systems: the Case of Italy1
MAPPING EXCELLENCE IN NATIONAL RESEARCH SYSTEMS: THE CASE OF ITALY1 GIOVANNI ABRAMO Laboratory for Studies of Research and Technology Transfer, Dept of Management, School of Engineering, University of Rome “Tor Vergata” – Italy and Italian Research Council CIRIACO ANDREA D’ANGELO, FLAVIA DI COSTA Laboratory for Studies of Research and Technology Transfer, Dept of Management, School of Engineering, University of Rome “Tor Vergata” - Italy The study of the concept of “scientific excellence” and the methods for its measurement and evaluation is taking on increasing importance in the development of research policies in many nations. However, scientific excellence results as difficult to define in both conceptual and operational terms, because of its multi-dimensional and highly complex character. The literature on the theme is limited to few studies of an almost pioneering character. This work intends to contribute to the state of the art by exploring a bibliometric methodology which is effective, simple and inexpensive, and which further identifies “excellent” centers of research by beginning from excellence of the individual researchers affiliated with such centers. The study concentrates on the specific case of public research organizations in Italy, analyzing 109 scientific categories of research in the so called “hard” sciences and identifying 157 centers of excellence operating in 60 of these categories. The findings from this first application of the methodology should be considered exploratory and indicative. With a longer period of observation and the addition of further measurements, making the methodology more robust, it can be extended and adapted to a variety of national and supranational contexts, aiding with policy decisions at various levels.

  • The Places of Political Science in Italy: the University of Torino and the University of Calabria at Cosenza Interviews with Alfio Mastropaolo* and Giorgio Giraudi‡
Italian Political Science, No. 5, Autumn 2010, 36-41 The places of Political Science in Italy: The University of Torino and the University of Calabria at Cosenza interviews with Alfio Mastropaolo* and Giorgio Giraudi‡ With this issue we start a journey across Italy to visit the places where political science is taught. IPS will visit both large and small universities, places where political science has a long tradition and others where it was implanted more recently. The goal is to draw a map and also to assess what is the state of the discipline in Italian universities. Before starting we will only remind a few numbers (updated to October, 2010) which give a first rough measure of the situation of Political Science in Italy: Faculties of Political Sciences: 37 Academic staff: Full professors: 62; associate professors: 53; assistant professors (ricercatori): 85; post docs (assegnisti di ricerca): 47. PhD: • 5 Programs (University of Milano, University of Pavia, University of Siena, Univer- sity of Torino, SUM Firenze) • number of enrolled PhD candidates per year: approx. 20/30 Some of these programs (for instance Firenze SUM) involve a consortium of more than one university. There are a few other programs where political science is part of a broader set of disciplines (Lucca IMT, etc.). Main Political Science Journals: Rivista Italiana di Scienza Politica (1971- ), Teoria Politica (1985-2009), Quaderni di Scienza Politica (1994- ), Rivista Italiana di Poli- tiche Pubbliche (2002- ). * Alfio Mastropaolo, is currently professor of Political Science at the University of Torino where he is the coordinator of the PhD program. Contact: [email protected] ‡ Giorgio Giraudi, received a PhD in Political Science from the University of Florence and is currently assistant professor in Political Science at the Università della Calabria at Cosenza.
