From Bedfont & Feltham FC Manager Adam Bessent:

Good afternoon everyone and welcome to The Orchard. I hope our match officials and all associated with Eversley & California enjoy their short stay with us.

It has been 4 weeks since our last league game here and due to poor weather and AC London's expulsion we've only played 2 competitive games in that time. Last Saturday was our poorest performance of the season. We are currently the highest scorers in the league but we were also very proud to hold the best defensive record. We made lots of mistakes and our work rate off the ball wasn't good enough. Luckily for us our front 4 were on song and carved out chances in the tough conditions, which they duly put away.

As disappointing as the performance was, the boys kept plugging away in the second half and never gave up on getting something from the game. We won't play brilliantly every week, but it's important we still pick up points when we're below par. Everything considered, we'll take the point, learn from it and move on to today's game. Our visitors today are a young side, well coached and are capable of beating anyone in this league so we will have to get back to our best to get a positive result.

These are my last set of notes before the Christmas break so on behalf of the players and the rest of the management team; I'd like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and thank you for your ongoing support. I hope you enjoy the game.

Yellows fight back for valuable draw.

Facing a very strong Epsom & Ewell side at Chipstead on Saturday in appalling conditions The Yellows came away with a hard fought point.

The Yellows took the lead through Reece Gairy on 11 minutes with a nice finish to give the visitors the lead. 0-1. Epsom fought back with the equaliser shortly after to draw level.1-1.

Due to the torrential rain both defences were making mistakes and the home side took the lead when they took advantage of slack defending. For the neutrals amongst the spectators it was turning into a very entertaining game.2-1.

On 38 minutes Kelvin Karanja secured an equaliser for The Yellows after a well worked move to get to half time level.2-2. The second half continued at a frenetic pace but it was the home side who once more took the lead.3-2. But again the visitors came back to draw level when Farhad Mahboudi netted to level again at 3-3 on 67minutes.

Shortly after this Epsom took the lead once again the as the match was heading towards the final whistle.4-3.It looked like the home side had secured all 3 points But in the 90th minute up popped Farhad Mahboudi to score from the tightest of angles to secure an important point. Final Score 4-4. Credit all 22 players for giving home and away spectators a match that will not be forgotten, having been played in such bad weather conditions. Thank you to our hosts for looking after us and look forward to meeting you all back at The Orchard in the New Year.

Our Visitors – Eversley & California

Eversley FC was originally formed in 1910 but returned to play in Eversley Village in 2008. Eversley FC were founder member of the Surrey Elite Intermediate League the Boars became Champions in Season 2008-09 (on goal difference). The following season Eversley joined the Combined Counties in Division 1. In the first three seasons they finished mid table.

California Youth Football Club was formed in 1975 when a group of parents brought together an Under 8’s team based in the California area of Wokingham, Berkshire and from where the Club takes its name. The Club now is providing foundation and youth football for all age groups, the Club expanded to become one of the largest youth soccer clubs in the area, and in the year 2000 it was the first Berks & Bucks FA affiliated club in the area to be awarded the FA Charter status, also winning the South of England FA Charter Merit Award in 2002; it is currently an FA Charter Development Club.

California FC introduced girls’ soccer to the area in 2000, Today our Ladies 1st Team play their football in the TVS League.

California Youth FC established strong links with Eversley FC with the 2 clubs merged in 2012 to form Eversley & California Football Club moving to the Boars Den, where we play our games today.

Playing in the CCL in recent times as shown the Boars have consistently finishing in the top half of the division, only missing out on promotion by only a few points in the seasons past 2014-2015 & 2016-17. The season 2012-13 we finished in 2nd but could not go up due to ground grading.

The new era under our Chairman & Exe Committee, has brought in a Reserves/Development side who are playing in the highly rated Suburban League in 2017-18. Plus, by creating a training programme which includes the youth team players from under 16 in to Seniors it allows a clear pathway to allow all to play in the same way with the coaching coming from the group of coaches who now are implementing that training plan.

The extended ground improvements, which have completed in the last 2 years, to give us the required ground grading to have our first team being invited to enter the FA Cup 2017-18 season for the first time in our history. Unfortunately falling at the first hurdle and going out at our first attempt.

The Club now operates a structure for progression for youth players in the local community from soccer school from the very young, through from Under 7’s up to and including Under 18’s, which is a true player pathway into Senior men’s teams. Today we are already seeing several young players who joined the club at 6 years old, now playing regularly in our First & Development Teams.

The Boars now are also providing football coaching and matches for all abilities over the weekend at our ESA sports grounds. The Club runs an annual tournament supported by teams from far afield, soccer camps and specialist coaching courses throughout the year.

This Day in Football History:

15 December 1952 - The Prince of Denmark

On this day in 1952, Danish international striker Allan Simonsen was born in Vejle. He went on to become the first player to score in all three of the European Cup, UEFA Cup, and Cup Winners' Cup finals, and was the first Danish player to be named European Footballer of the Year.

He started his professional career in 1971 with his hometown club, Vejle BK, where he helped the club to the Danish league title in his first season. They repeated as champions in 1972, complemented with a victorious Danish Cup campaign. Simonsen's play drew the attention of defending Bundesliga champions Borussia Mönchengladbach, who signed him later that year.

Although it took his a while to acclimate to his new German surroundings, he ultimately became a key player for his new club, scoring 76 goals in 178 league appearances between 1972 and 1979. Along the way, he won three Bundesliga titles (1975, 1976, 1977), two UEFA Cups (1975, 1979), and one German Cup (1973). They also reached the final of the European Cup in 1977, but lost 3- 1 to Liverpool, with Simonsen scored the Germans' lone goal. His performance in the 1976-77 season made him the 1977 European Footballer of the Year. He was voted into the Danish Football Hall of Fame in November 2008.

In 1979, after scoring the winning goal in that year's UEFA Cup Final, he moved to Barcelona. In three seasons there, he added the Copa del Rey (1981) to his silverware collection, then scored another match-winning goal in European competition to beat Standard Liège in the 1982 Cup Winners' Cup.

After a short time with Charlton Athletic (1982-83), Simonsen finished his playing career back in Vejle, winning yet another Danish league title in 1984 before retiring in 1989. He moved into management with Vejle BK (1991-94), the Faroe Islands (1994-2001), Luxembourg (2001-04), and Danish club FC Fredericia (2011-13).

Game of The People

Ground debate: League Two and its ancient homes

FOOTBALL is full of financial imbalances and the gap between the Premier and, for example, League Two is painfully vast. The gulf is so substantial that there is an argument for shifting the bottom two division of the to part-time status. However, the emotional pull of the game is such that this is unlikely to happen in the near future. Supporters of clubs at the lowest end of the structure are just as passionate as fans of Manchester United and City. The growth in English football has mostly been at the top end, with Premier League attendances rising some 82% since 1992-93. Similarly, the Championship has seen gates increase by 93%. Compare that to the 24% growth of League One and 35% in League Two in that same period and it is clear that football’s new audience is gravitating towards the high profile, heavily marketed, end of the industry. This is further evidenced as you go down the ladder – in the past 10 years, attendances at non-league step 3, often considered the very essence of the game outside of the Football League, have remained unchanged, confirming that this level still faces challenges in terms of winning support. In an era when new stadiums have helped redefine some clubs, making them more community accessible and enabling them to generate more income from their facilities, it is perhaps surprising that fewer than half a dozen League Two clubs are playing in recently-built grounds: Colchester, Forest Green, MK Dons, and Northampton. That said, there is no shortage of clubs that aspire to relocate to a new site. Clubs like Bury, United, Grimsby Town, Lincoln City and Macclesfield Town have all looked at the possibility of moving. Those that own their own home are in a better position than those at the mercy of their landlords. Clubs like Bury and Carlisle, with stadiums found in the middle of heavy residential areas, are arguably sitting on prime redevelopment land. Finding that happy compromise of space and accessibility is a challenge for any club, though. Most new grounds are not centrally-based, for obvious reasons. When most traditional stadiums were built (Bury have been at Gigg Lane since the era of gas lamp and horse-drawn transport), the pressure on inner-city traffic just wasn’t an issue. Although people complain that out-of-town means out-of-sight, very few people walk to games these days as the demographic and use of the inner-city has completely changed. At League Two level, of the current 24 clubs, 11 have been at their current homes for over a century, with Bury leading the way with 133 years and Lincoln in residence at Sincil Bank since 1895. While many fans dread the thought of moving from the comfort blanket of their ancestral home, there has also been a shift in sentiment that relocation can bring many benefits – fans of West Ham United might not agree with that view, but conversely, the impressive structures at Manchester City and Arsenal have created eye-catching stadiums that combine function with form. Tottenham’s regulars probably cannot wait to move into the new White Hart Lane. Certainly there are some homely grounds in League Two, but many are limited in terms of their potential for expansion and with some clubs owning sites that are ripe for building – solving space issues as well as financial problems – the temptation to call in the developer must be huge. Currently, the stadium utilisation level among League Two clubs is around 43%. Last season, Lincoln generated 86.8% and Luton Town 83.9%, but at the opposite end, Morecambe’s Globe Arena was just 23% full at most games. Compare these figures with the near-capacity utilisation level of the Premier and it is easy to see where future trends are heading. Grounds like Crewe’s Gresty Road, Notts County’s Meadow Lane and Carlisle’s Brunton Park are steeped in the history and folklore of the game in Britain. But is their time coming to an end? For decades, these football homes have also provided landmarks in their respective towns, not least because of the floodlights that can be spotted for miles and provide a marker of a sort. But as we have seen at places like Forest Green and Dartford, where ecology is making a stand (no pun), football is changing. The question can clubs avoid being over-sentimental and acquire the appetite for change in order to ensure long-term survival? With thanks to Neil Jensen. Introducing Sideburn Bob - The People's Champion

Since 1974 #sideburnbob has been gracing Non-League football programmes either as a front cover or inside a programme for various advertising, as far as I am aware he was first spotted in the 1974 Derby County Ram Boutique advert and thereafter in other various League Club programmes first appearing on the 1976 Kilmarnock programme as a front cover, from there on in fronting 100s of non-league programmes with his glory years being 1980's & 90s.

The mystery of exactly where Bob came from continues. Tony Williams who many of you will know from his Non-League publications wrote in the non league grounds of Great Britain that he had first spotted Bob in a 1950s football magazine and had pasted him into a scrapbook. Doubt remains on this siting as nothing was ever spotted again for over 20 years until the Ram Boutique advert. Popular suggestion is he is in fact clipart which is more plausible as Bob looks like a 70s character and famous footballer Malcolm MacDonald with his ever present partner looking like Rodney Bewes from the Likely Lads which older readers will have fond memories of. So, why do I love this character? Well simply because it brings back memories of programmes collected throughout the years. He is an iconic figure for me - some of my first memories of attending games within Non-League.

Throughout the 2017-18 season, there were many clubs surprisingly interested in issuing programmes with the iconic image either on the front cover or within the programme itself. Prolific issuers were Portland United, Sholing Sports and Bedfont & Feltham and big thanks goes to those 3 programme editors - and of course, to all the other editors that issued.

#sideburnbob the People's Champion will continue to be an iconic figure for me and the search is on for his history and collecting programmes.
