13 The Beer Hunter A warm welcome to one and all today for (hopefully) our next step forward on the road to Wembley! A particular pleasure to welcome back our old friends from Great Wakering - always a good day out when we were in the same league together.

If today’s game ends in a draw and goes to a replay down there, the village has several pubs strung along its main street, of which the nearest to the ground is the White Hart. This lovely- looking, welcoming old pub is all low ceilings, comfy chairs and horse brasses, and offers three real ales - Greene King IPA, Wells & Young’s Bombardier and a guest beer, often from the local Leigh-On-Sea Brewery. It also offers an extensive menu of home-cooked food.

The menu is also a main attraction further down the road at the Exhibition Inn, though beerwise the choice here is limited to Greene King IPA and a guest.

Back up near the ground, the Castle seems to have expanded its beer range since our last visit (according to CAMRA’s Whatpub website at whatpub.com), and now has Fullers London Pride, Sharp’s Doom Bar, Timothy Taylor’s Landlord and a guest, often from the local George’s/Hopmonster brewery. And guess what - they too are noted for their home-cooked food. They sure do like to eat well in Wakering!

Back here in E17, there are not one but two beer festivals on this weekend. After the match today you can get on up (to quote James Brown) to the Orford House Beer Festival in Orford Road - free admission, 12 real ales plus lagers, ciders, music and street food. And tomorrow it’s the turn of the Contemporary Cask Festival (£5 admission) at the Pump House Museum in South Access Road, with a number of real ales served on gravity in an old Vic Line carriage, plus keg beers, cocktails, wine in a can (!), locally-made soft drinks and bar snacks - and maybe a bit of music too.

In the Leyton Reserve side we had Eddie Whetton, Les Downes, Ted Hasley, with Ray Gramlick out on the wing. Also playing was Dennis Hall, who scored the winner against us in the 1952 Amateur Cup Final. Our centre forward was Johnny Dankaro, a Nigerian mining engineer.

Johnny had toured England with the Nigerian National team a few years earlier. At centre-half was Johnnie Bays (pictured right). John was fixture secretary of the Essex County FA for many years. I only learnt from David Ward last week that John had sadly died.

John had played for Leyton Orient, Chingford Town and Walthamstow Avenue. He had joined the Essex FA in 1974, becoming a life member in 1995. He passed away in February 2016, aged ninety-two. I used to bump into him in the Lea Bridge Road.

WHAT YOUTH CLUB(S) DID YOU PLAY FOR? I started off at LOASS before playing for Buckhurst Hill and Waltham Abbey. I was also a scholar at Brentford and Colchester United.

WHO WAS YOUR FOOTBALLING IDOL GROWING UP? It was David Seaman minus the ponytail. He made me want to be a goalkeeper.

WHAT TEAM DID/DO YOU SUPPORT AND WHY DID YOU CHOOSE THAT TEAM? It was Arsenal because of David Seaman. I’m also half Scottish to tied to supporting Rangers because of my IF YOU COULD SIGN FOR ANY CLUB, WHAT family. WOULD BE YOUR DREAM CLUB TO PLAY FOR? WHAT IS YOUR BIGGEST ACHIEVEMENT IN I would love to play for Barcelona because I’d probably FOOTBALL? get paid a lot without having to do much. Has to be making my professional debut in League 1 for Colchester United against Rochdale. WHO IS THE WORST DRESSED? It has to be Emiel [Aiken]. He has worn some very WHAT ARE YOU AMBITIONS? questionable clobber so far. Truthfully, I just want to enjoy my football. When I quit, I didn’t play for 18 months so I’m just happy to WHO HAS THE WORST TASTE IN MUSIC? be playing. It has to be Nicky Symons. He listens to club anthems which can get on your nerves and I prefer to listen to WHAT IS THE BEST THING ABOUT PLAYING lyrics. He also plays it off YouTube so you have to listen FOR WALTHAMSTOW? to the adverts. Chico [Ramos] is the best thing as he is the clean sheet guru but also Ryan [Maxwell] and the changing room. WHO HAS THE WORST BANTER? We have a good group of lads here. Both Benji Crilley and Jack Folan have the worst banter. It is just terrible. WHAT IS THE BEST GAME YOU’VE BEEN INVOLVED IN? WHO LIKES TO THINK THEY ARE THE CLUBS My debut has to be my favourite game. Although we HARD-MAN? lost 2-1 on the day, I only found out 40 minutes before It’s Ryan [Maxwell]. That’s it, full stop. the start that I was playing and right before I turned 21.

Danny McCullock drove a low cross into the box but the ball was directed wide by Ibe. Stansted had a penalty shout 10 1 minutes into the game for a hand ball when the ball bounced up and struck Jamie Bennett’s arm, but all shouts were waved away by the referee.

Walthamstow began to dominate as the first half went on with Ibe at the forefront of 0 the chances. He dragged a shot just wide before a good one-two with Dwade James gave the latter space but it was a comfortable save for Pellin the Stansted goal. 17.08.19

Essex Senior League Despite Stansted going close just before half time, Stow continued to press after the break and it didn’t take long for Dwade James to get his 3rd league goal of the season when Ibe slipped the ball into his feet after a fantastic ball from Kyan Gulliver. James just managed to the get the ball out of his feet and lift it over the keeper.

The goal certainly gave Stow the confidence going forward and forced Stansted into a tactic change as they needed to get something out of the game. Callum Ibe was unlucky not to score on his debut when he curled an effort towards the top corner but it was headed over by a Stansted defender.

McCullock had a number of chances but couldn’t find the back of the net. He tried his luck from distance but the ball was tipped over by the keeper before he cut in and had another effort but it was a comfortable save by the Stansted keeper. In the end, Stansted struggled to create much going forward, and Stow saw out the win comfortably.

Some excerpts from Tividale to Wembley.

Back in 1976, he wrote Journey to Wembley, a football Tividale: “The ground is half way up a hill. On three odyssey from Tividale to Wembley. James started on sides it is bounded by new homes, on the fourth it his FA Cup journey at Tividale and worked his way to opens out into a panoramic view of the Midlands the old twin towers to Manchester United v Liverpool, industrial sprawl.” and as a postscript, went to Rome to see Liverpool win their first European Cup. He followed the winners of Telford United’s player-manager, Geoff Hurst: “It was each round of the FA Cup to the next round. a smashing meal, though Hurst made another mental note – something about the serving of the dessert

Matlock Town: “A small club needs to make use of whatever resources it has – and cast-off sofas are not be rejected when the dug-out needs furnishing.”

Carlisle United: “The snow had gone from the ground, but the fields were grey-green with frost and a cold mist had retreated only a few hundred yards behind the iron fences of Brunton Park; a frontier-post of football indeed, guarded only by sheep. Nothing moves out there.”

Kevin Keegan: “The main reason people keep on about Keegan’s impending transfer is that Keegan himself never stops taking about it; even in a TV broadcast when the title was won, he couldn’t resist speculation about how the team would manage ‘next season…after I have left…’cos it’s time for me to go’. This is the tune he’s been playing for well over a year.”

James appeared to be an old- fashioned Fleet Street peddler who earned his spurs after being hired as an office boy. He belonged to a different age, but he was widely acknowledged as a great “all rounder”. He was 87.
