After a disapointing evening on Tuesday, we look to get back to winning ways this afternoon in the league

Good afternoon everyone, welcome to Wadham Lodge for another home game, this time against Sawbridgeworth Town. We’ve got four away games on the bounce after today, and only two home games planned between now and the end of November.

I think that by now, most of you will have heard about the return of Dwade James to the club. We’re all delighted to have him back, and after a few weeks of hard work, we finally got our man on Thursday.

The headline figures are that Then on Wednesday, we featured in the New Dwade scored 64 goals in 60 starts for us, but he York Times. Max looks back at a disapointing night on Tuesday, but has news of a big return to the playing squad.

Good afternoon all,

Welcome back to Wadham Lodge for today’s fixture against Sawbridgeworth Town FC; a warm welcome to all of their management team and players for this afternoon’s ESL contest.

Results and performances have generally picked up over the last few games in the league and we have started to see performances week to week, bar Tuesday’s night display away to Hoddesdon. We were poor defensively and didn’t keep the ball well enough over the course of 90 minutes and especially in the midfield areas, which allowed Hoddesdon to build up a head of steam. To be fair to them, they punished us on the counter-attack, although we had good opportunities in the game to answer back, but we just couldn’t find the target on the night a missed a few guilt-edged chances. A performance we need to learn from but one to forget quickly and put behind us and move on.

In terms of the squad we have had a bit of a reshuffle to the playing staff; Emile Aiken and Reece Conway have left the club via mutual consent. I’d like to thank all three players for their contributions over this season and wish them all the very best. Dwade James returns today, and this is a huge coup for the football club, Dwade has been in the pipeline for a few weeks now and after a short spell away with Hendon and due to circumstances out of Dwades control, its worked out better for Dwade to return to his home town club and play football regularly after such a long lay off. Dwade is a player I hold in high regard not just for his goal-scoring attributes but his all-round persona and attitude which is going to be so important to us moving forwards.

Today is our last home game until the 3rd of November, and we’re looking for a result and a reaction from Tuesday night. The players are fully aware of the expectations set by us as a management team and our league ambitions this year, and we need to rally together and start to realise our full potential. There’s still lots of positives this season; a fantastic run in the FA Cup, we’re still in the FA Vase and the league is a marathon and not a sprint and we are right in the mix and will be at the end of the season. Despite the rain, there was great support on Tuesday from the Rabble, and we can’t thank you enough.

COME ON YOU STOWWWWW!!

Kind Regards, Max Mitchell

For obvious reasons, I just hope we can mount another serious challenge for the top places, not just to get our club back into the

SAWBRIDGEWORTH TOWN

CLUB INFO FOUNDED: FORM: 1897 L L D L L POSITION 2020/21: NICKNAME: 21ST ROBINS HIGHEST LEAGUE FINISH 2ND - ESSEX SENIOR (1993) LAST SEASON:

Sawbridgeworth had a season to forget last season and were spared their blushes when the season was declared null and void. After 28 games, they founded themselves rock-bottom and 14 points adrift of 18th-placed Tower Hamlets, having only picked up 8 points. They had won two, drawn two and lost 24 whilst scoring 30 but conceding 99.

Sawbo had only progressed in one cup competition as they beat Redbridge 3-1 in the Peter Butcher Trophy but weren’t able to play in the Quarter-final due to the season being cut short. Their runs in the FA Cup, FA Vase, Errington Challenge Cup, Gordon Brasted Trophy and Herts Senior Cup were all ended at the first hurdle.

This season has seen a change in fortune for the Robins. They currently sit 10th after seven games having won two, drawn two and lost three. They have already picked up the eight points they had all season last year whilst scoring 15 but conceding 22. They reached the Preliminary Round of the FA Cup after being Romford 2-1 before it was brought to an end by St Margaretsbury whilst they were eliminated from the First Qualifying Round of the FA Vase after losing 4-2 on penalties to Sporting Bengal United.

13 CLUB HISTORY Formed in 1897 by members of Sawbridgeworth Cricket Club, Sawbridgeworth Town Football Club played their first friendly match on Pishiobury Park, a large tract of common land to the south of the Town.

At the turn of the century they joined the East Herts league and later relocated to Great Hyde Hall. At this time, they were playing in the Stortford League and had their headquarters in the White Lion Hotel in the centre of town.

Just after the first world war they moved to their next ground - a field next to the Hand & Crown Public House. This venue became very popular at the time and staged many local cup finals.

They moved to their present ground in 1930. At the time the facility was known as Cambridge Road but following construction of a housing estate and provision of a new entrance it was rechristened Crofters End.

Following the second World War Sawbridgeworth Town FC joined the Spartan Lague for their first taste of senior football, however this proved not to be successful and they rejoined the Stortford League.

With the building of a new clubhouse in 1975, the club reapplied for Senior status and joined the Essex Senior League. After a few years and steady improvements to the ground, floodlights were erected which enabled the Robins to participate in further cup competitions and evening games.

The 2005-6 season was one of the more successful in recent history for the Robins, with the senior side winning the Herts Charity Shield, the reserves becoming the league champions and the ladies side reaching the play-offs of their division.

Richard Branchflower took over the managerial reigns in 2007. His appointment was part of a grand plan from chairman Steve Day to integrate the youth, reserve and first team squads, but it didn’t quite work out with Branchflower resigning in late 2008 after a bottom half

The next three seasons with Wickham in charge saw releative indifference, with his side finishing in the lower echelons of the table, turning it around in his final season to finish a very good sixth.

Marc Das was promoted from assistant manager in 2013 to take full control of the first team, and lead his side to 6th and 5th place finishes. However, frustrated as what he saw as a lack of ambition, he moved on to

Takeley at the start of 2015-16.

10th, 5th and 8th-placed finishes have followed in the season’s following Das’ departure, with John and Mark Watters moulding Sawbo into one of the most consistent and solid teams in the division.

Sawbo reached the final of the Essex Senior League Cup in consecutive seasons, but were defeated 1-0 both times; in 2017 by Takeley and by League champions Great Wakering Rovers in 2018.

21 THE BEER HUNTER Welcome everybody - no fewer than five away trips on the bounce after today’s game, so let’s crack straight on. First up, we’re off to St Margaretsbury - here, the nearest pub to the ground is the Jolly Fisherman, situated by the river just up the road from St Margaret’s station.

This is a McMullen’s house, offering their AK Original Mild, Country Bitter and a seasonal special. There is also an extensive food menu.

Following that we have another trip up country, this time to the picturesque and historic town of Saffron Walden. As you’d expect, there’s no shortage of pubs here, and the nearest one to the ground appears to be the King’s Arms in Market Hill. Described by CAMRA’s online guide (whatpub.com) as “ A venerable wooden- beamed multi-room pub”, there’s a good choice here - Adnam’s Southwold Bitter, Otter Bitter, Timothy Taylor’s Landlord and two guests; food is also served.

Not far away in Gold Street, the Old English Gentleman is another old (18th c) pub, with Woodforde’s Wherry plus two changing guests, plus bar food and sandwiches. If you fancy exploring further, there are a number of other pubs dotted around the town.

In sharp contrast, the next trip - to Clapton’s latest home-in- exile down in Docklands - offers only one pub within reach of the ground: the Fox@Connaught in Lynx Way.

A lone original docks survivor surrounded by redevelopment, this tall, imposing red-brick building offers Fuller’s London Pride and Shepherd Neame Spitfire, also food.
