e extend a warm welcome this evening Wto one of our oldest friends in Enfield FC.

It appears that Enfield have recently changed their name by dropping the date of ‘1893’, referring to the original year they were formed.

I just wish they had made it clear to the Essex Senior League, they seemed to have edged their bets by using both names.

Today’s programme is an away game at their old Cherry Orchard Lane ground, where they played for forty years. What a delightful name for any football ground, it makes you think of Mary Poppins.

I gather this was renamed as Churchbury Road – I know what I prefer. Enfield left here in 1936 and relocated to Southbury Road, where I recall us losing 7 – 0 in the FA Cup back in the sixties.

This game was played on 31st October 1925, my

8 old dad’s birthday, in the 3rd Qualifying Round of the FA Challenge Cup. On the day Leyton won by three goals to one.

We went on to beat Cheshunt in the next round and St Albans City in the 1st Round proper. Finally going out to Reading in the 2nd Round by six nil! Sadly, no prize money in those days.

On the day Enfield, of the Athenian League, had a couple of county players in W Green and J E Dyson. Leyton, of the London League, boasted Tommy Cable at centre-half and Tommy Hawkings, Harry Hall and George Smith upfront. Along with both full- backs Harry Terris and Jim Preston, all of whom would represent Leyton in their first FA Amateur Cup Final the following season.

I noticed in the programme notes that Tom Swift, the walking football mascot, would be paying a visit. It is said he had walked 10,000 miles wearing the appropriate home teams colours.

He had apparently visited almost all the major grounds in England since 1920. He even walked from Sheffield to Wembley to attend the FA Cup Final, in 1926, taking six days.

Hope he took care crossing the M25!
