WORDS: BILL BADGER

f you are watching this weekend’s FA speak about his own mental health issues after he was Cup ties you might notice the unusual detained by police for his own safety in 2017. Each game kicks off that he got into such a situation before he spoke to one minute later than it usually would someone highlights how difficult it can be to recognise as part of an initiative to get people to you are struggling and if you do, to talk to someone spend 60 seconds reflecting on their mental health. about it.

I am sure that, like every game at this level, this match Lennon later said he stated to feel better within 10 will kick off at any time before 15:00 and 15:08, minutes of talking to someone at the hospital. It was so giving us that bit of extra time to think about not just hard to do and yet when he finally was forced to do it ourselves but others too. he felt an instant relief.

The club recognised they initiate conversations about it and highlight the help were well placed to be a community hub for mental that is available. health because community activity can create a sense of belonging, none less so than football. Aaron Lennon is probably the most famous player to

22 Just two years after joining up with local wellbeing providers the club is working with the local NHS Trust, Brent Council, Wembley Stadium and MIND to sustain the counselling and support services it has been able to provide. Prince William even visited the club earlier in the season to recognise its success.

At a basic level the club offers free tickets to those who would like to get out and see a game but can’t necessary afford it. Through their partners they are able to support people with a range of mental health issues, from depression to dementia and loneliness. Not every club is able to run the sort of scheme that Hendon are a part of but most clubs I have visited recognise that they play a role in their communities and feel that responsibility.

I personally suffer from anxiety which is always there and means I am susceptible to bouts of high anxiety and depression without there being any obvious cause. Others may be frequently affected by stressful events or it may occur just once in their lifetime. Just like physical health, your mental wellbeing needs to be actively managed to try to avoid falling into poor health. What that means in practice differs from person to person but the key is not telling people you are fine when you are not OK.

My football friends were the last people I wanted to talk to when I was struggling particularly badly. We laugh and joke and take the mick out of each other, no one ever talks about how they are feeling. I wasn’t going to be the one who let the side down and be seen as different. It turned out that talking about it in my football environment was easier than having to talk about it with my family and at work. I think if I had spoken to them first, it would have been a stepping stone to dealing with things much sooner. It was much easier talking to them than anyone else.

Football is beautifully uncomplicated. Conversations are frank and simple, in language we’re all familiar with. When I have told football people that I am struggling they’ve asked if there is anything that they can do for me while I am dealing with it and stress that offer of help is always there. Usually there isn’t anything they can do or that I want them to do. I just need it to be OK to say I am not OK.

Knowing that they have my back gives me the support to withstand a tough time or to seek further help if I need it. Just like Aaron Lennon found, just saying anything about can be a release, removing great burden from your shoulders.

So when you arrive today and someone asks how you are, reflect before you parrot our usual answer “I’m fine”. If you are ok check in with the people around you. You might help someone more than you could imagine just by asking how they are. And if you have got a couple quid spare Ryan and the players are raising money for mental health charity MIND, so why not support their efforts.

Lewis Francis took the ball around the keeper and tried to get it to Dwade James but he sent the ball over the bar. 0 match report match Dwade James had another chance 5 minutes later but his header hit the post before being cleared out of play for a corner. The ball was swung in by player-manager Ryan Maxwell and without a touch from anyone else, it went straight in to give Walthamstow the lead. 5

The goal gave Walthamstow confidence as they continued to press. 28.12.19 Lewis Francis had a shot comfortably saved by the Reserve keeper Peter Butcher Trophy before Stanley Muguo scored his first for the club to give Walthamstow a 2-0 lead. He was given plenty of space in the opposition box as he headed it in. A minute later, Stow had their third of the afternoon when Lewis Francis made a good run and tucked the ball into the far corner after being played through. Dwade James searched for his first of the afternoon but a tame header was comfortably saved by the keeper before he made it three from the penalty spot after just 23 minutes.

With 15 minutes before the break, James got his second. A good run from Samrai Gebrai allowed his to get the ball to Stow’s leading- scorer who slotted it past the keeper from close range.

The second half saw Walthamstow come out the quickest but in the opening minute, Dwade couldn’t get this shot off. Walthamstow had loads of chances but couldn’t find another goal. Dwade James saw a header saved comfortably before he sent a shot just wide as he tried to chip the on-rushing keeper.

Despite a couple more chances in the last 10 minutes, the game ended with Stow winning thanks to their five first half goals. 26 ryan fc soccer school
