Page 10 PAGE 2 MESSAGE FROM THE ROSH YESHIVA Sefer Shemos is the story of the emergence of Klal Yisrael from a small tribe of the progeny of Yaakov, to a thriving nation with millions of descendants, who accepted upon themselves the yoke of Torah. It is the story of a nation that went out to a desert and sowed the seeds of the future – a future that thrives to this very day. More than sixty years ago, my grandfather Rav Yaakov Kamenetzky, zt”l, charged my father and mother with the formidable task, “Go to the desert and plant the seeds of Torah.” What started as a fledgling school with six or seven boys, flourished more than a hundred fold. With institutions of tefilah, and higher Torah learning, all the outgrowth of that initial foray into the desert, my father’s impact is not only eternal but ever-expanding. This year’s dinner will mark both the commemoration of those accomplishments and a commitment to the renewal, refurbishment and expansion of the Torah facility he built brick by brick in 1964. Whether you are a student, an alumnus, a parent or community member, my father’s vision touched your life, and I hope that you will join us in honoring his.

Barr, Jr., the first Director of the Museum and Director of Museum Collections for 20 years before his retirement in 1967. THE PAINTING AND SCULPTURE COLLECTION: A NEW PERSPECTIVE, opening at The Museum of Modern Art on March 14, brings the exhibition of the Museum collection up to date with new ground-floor galleries devoted solely to works executed since the middle 1950s. The Museum's unrivaled historical review of the modern masters and movements from Cezanne through Abstract Expressionism is presented in remodeled and newly installed galleries on the second and third floors. The expansion and redesigning of these galleries, carried out over a period of months by the present staff headed by William S. Rubin, Chief Curator of the Painting and Sculpture Collection, has been made possible in part by a generous grant from the National Endowment for the Arts and support from the New York State Council on the Arts. "Each new installation is, of necessity, something of a re-evaluation — if for no other reason than that only a fraction of the Museum's collection can be shown at one time," Mr.

  • Dear Youth Directors, Youth Chairs, and Youth Leaders, NCYI Is Excited to Continue Our Very Successful Parsha Nation Guides
Dear Youth Directors, Youth chairs, and Youth Leaders, NCYI is excited to continue our very successful Parsha Nation Guides. I hope you’re enjoying and learning from Parsha Nation as much as we are. Putting together Parsha Nation every week is indeed no easy task. It takes a lot of time and effort to ensure that each section, as well as each age group, receives the attention and dedication it deserves. We inspire and mold future leaders. The youth leaders of Young Israel have the distinct honor and privilege to teach and develop the youth of Young Israel. Children today are constantly looking for role models and inspirations to latch on to and learn from. Whether it is actual sit down learning sessions, exciting Parsha trivia games, or even just walking down the hall to the Kiddush room, our youth look to us and watch our every move. It’s not always about the things we say, it’s about the things we do. Our children hear and see everything we do whether we realize it or not. This year we are taking our Youth Services to new heights as we introduce our Leadership Training Shabbaton. This engaging, interactive shabbaton will give youth leader’s hands on experience and practical solutions to effectively guide your youth department. Informal education is key. What the summer shows us as educators is that informal education can deliver better results and help increase our youth’s connection to Hashem. More and more shuls are revamping their youth program to give their children a better connection to shul and to Hashem.

  • A Japanese Righteous Gentile: the Sugihara Case1
Chapter 10 A Japanese Righteous Gentile: The Sugihara Case1 In the Avenue of the Righteous Gentiles in the Yad Vashem Holocaust memorial in Jerusalem, Japan is represented by one individual deemed worthy to be included: a man who helped some 6,000 Jews escape from Lithuania in the summer of 1940. His name was Vice Consul Sugihara Chiune (or Sugihara Sempo), who granted transit visas to Japan to some two thousand, six hundred Polish and Lithuanian Jewish families, thus saving them from either probable extermination by the Germans or pro- longed incarceration or Siberian exile by the Soviets. Sugihara would have remained a footnote in history were it not for his efforts, made—as it was later claimed—without the prior approval of, and at times without the knowledge of, his superiors in Tokyo. It is hard to determine what led Sugihara to help Jews, and to what extent he was aware that he would earn a place in Jewish history. Apart from him and Vice Consul Shibata in Shanghai, who alerted the Jewish community in that city to the Meisinger scheme, Japanese civilian or mil- itary officials did not go out of their ways to help Jews, probably because there was no need to. We have already noted that the Japanese government and military had no intention of liquidating the Jews in the territories under their control and consistently rejected German requests that they do so. What led Japan to act the way it did was not the result of any concern for the Jews but rather the result of cool and calculated considerations.

1950 Sculpture in Wood and Stone by Carroll Barnes (March 1–March 15) Carroll Barnes (1906–1997) worked in various careers before turning his attention to sculpture full time at the age of thirty. His skills earned him a position as a professor of art at the University of Texas and commissions from many public and private institutions. His sculptures are created in various media, such as Lucite and steel. This exhibition of the California-based artist’s work presented thirty-seven of his sculptures. Barnes studied with Carl Milles (1875– 1955) at the Cranbrook Academy of Art. [File contents: exhibition flier] Color Compositions by June Wayne (March) June Wayne’s (1918–2011) work received publicity in an article by Jules Langsner, who praised her for developing techniques of drawing the viewer’s eye through imagery and producing a sense of movement in her subjects. Her more recent works (as presented in the show) were drawn from the dilemmas to be found in Franz Kafka’s works. [File contents: two articles, one more appropriate for a later show of 1953 in memoriam Director Donald Bear] Prints by Ralph Scharff (April) Sixteen pieces by Ralph Scharff (1922–1993) were exhibited in the Thayer Gallery. Some of the works included in this exhibition were Apocrypha, I Hate Birds, Walpurgisnacht, Winter 1940, Nine Cats, and Four Cows and Tree Oranges. Watercolors by James Couper Wright (April 3–April 15) Eighteen of James Couper Wright’s (1906–1969) watercolors were presented in this exhibition. Maspidim Remember Klal Yisroel’s Rebbe, The Novominsker Rebbe April 29, 2020 See the recording of the azkarah below. By: Sandy Eller Harav Elya Brudny, Rosh Yeshiva, Mir Yeshiva and Chaver Moetzes Gedolei HaTorah 22 days later it still seems impossible to believe. As Klal Yisroel continues to mourn the loss of the Novominsker Rebbe, Rabbi Yaakov Perlow ztvk’l, Rosh Agudas Yisroel, chaverim of the Moetzes Gedolei HaTorah and family members offered deeply emotional divrei hesped for a leader who was a major guiding force for Torah Jewry in America for decades. With state and local laws still in effect prohibiting public gatherings, maspidim addressed an empty beis medrash at Yeshivas Novominsk, an audience of nearly 60,000 listening through teleconference and livestream as the Novominsker was remembered as Klal Yisroel’s Rebbe. Normally echoing with exuberant sounds oftalmidim learning Torah, the yeshiva’s stark emptiness was yet another painful reminder of the present eis tzarah that has devastated our community. Rabbi Zwiebel waiting at a safe social distance while others were speaking. Throughout the over two hour-long azkarah, Rabbi Perlow was lauded for his unwavering devotion to Klal Yisroel, somehow stretching the hours of each day so that he could immerse himself in his learning and still give his undivided attention to the many organizations and individuals who sought his guidance. In a pre-recorded segment, Rabbi Shmuel Kamenetsky, Rosh HaYeshiva, Talmudical Yeshiva of Philadelphia, described the Rebbe as a “yochid b’yisroel” who cared so deeply for others that their needs became his. No communal issue was deemed too large, too small, or beyond the Novominsker’s realm of expertise, his sage counsel steering Klal Yisroel through turbulent waters when communal institutions such asbris milah, shechitah and yeshiva curriculums were threatened by public officials.
