In the category of plays, both Paula Vogel's Indecent and J.T. Rogers' Oslo, current Broadway transfers, earned a total of 4 nominations, including for Outstanding Play. Playwrights Horizons' A Life also earned 4 total nominations, including for star David Hyde Pierce and director Anne Kauffman, earning her 4th career Lortel Award nomination; as did MCC Theater's YEN, including one for recent Academy Award nominee Lucas Hedges for Outstanding Lead Actor. Lighting Designer Ben Stanton earned a nomination for the fifth consecutive year - and his seventh career nomination, including a win in 2011 - for his work on YEN. Arab-Israeli Peace Agreements Eli E. Hertz Between 1993 and 2001, the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) and the Palestinian Authority (PA) signed six agreements with Israel and conducted countless meetings and summits to bring about a lasting peace between them. Each Israeli concession was met with Palestinian non-compliance and escalating violence. Six times, Palestinians failed to honor their commitments and increased their anti-Israeli aggressions. Finally, they broke every promise they made and began an all- out guerrilla war against Israel and its citizens. The failure of the Palestinian leadership to be earnest and trustworthy stands in stark contrast to the statesmanship exhibited by Israel’s peace partners in the region: the late Egyptian President Anwar Sadat and the late Jordanian King Hussein, both of whom honored their agreements. Although Israel succeeded in reaching historic peace agreements with Egypt and Jordan, when the time came to negotiate with the Palestinians in the territories, the Israelis discovered the Palestinian Arabs were unable or unwilling to choose peace or honor their given word. Despite numerous agreements, the pattern has always been the same: The Palestinians violate the conditions and commitments of virtually every agreement they sign. The Camp David Accords The 1979 Camp David Accords brought peace between Israel and Egypt. Because of Egypt’s key leadership role in the Arab world and the clauses in the peace treaty relating to Palestinian autonomy, the Camp David Accords were a breakthrough which offered a framework for a comprehensive settlement. The Palestinians, however, failed to respond positively to this window of opportunity. On March 26, 1979, Israel and Egypt took the first step toward a peace agreement between the Arab world and Israel when they signed the historic Camp David Accords on the White House lawn. -

NEWHOUSE THEATER Lincoln Center Theater (under the direction of André Bishop) has announced that Michael Aronov, Adam Dannheisser, Jennifer Ehle, Daniel Jenkins, Dariush Kashani, Jefferson Mays, Daniel Oreskes, Henny Russell, Joseph Siravo, and T. Ryder Smith will be featured in the cast of its upcoming production of OSLO, a new play by J.T. Rogers, directed by Bartlett Sher. Commissioned by Lincoln Center Theater, OSLO begins performances Thursday, June 16 and will open Monday, July 11 at the Mitzi E. Newhouse Theater (150 West 65 Street). Additional casting will be announced at a later date. It’s 1993. The world watches the impossible: Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin and Palestinian Liberation Organization Chairman Yasser Arafat, standing together in the White House Rose Garden, signing the first ever peace agreement between Israel and the PLO. How were the negotiations kept secret? Why were they held in a castle in the middle of Norway? And who are these mysterious negotiators? A darkly comic epic, OSLO tells the true, but until now, untold story of how one young couple, Norwegian diplomat Mona Juul (to be played by Jennifer Ehle) and her husband social scientist Terje Rød-Larsen (to be played by Jefferson Mays), planned and orchestrated top-secret, high-level meetings between the State of Israel and the Palestine Liberation Organization, which culminated in the signing of the historic 1993 Oslo Accords. -

Democracy Promotion in Palestine: Aid and the “De- Democratization” of the West Bank and Gaza Leila Farsakh Introduction Since the initiation of the Oslo Peace process in 1993, the West Bank and Gaza Strip is estimated to have received over $15billion in aid, two times the size of its GDP. While aid to conflict areas and peace transitioning societies is not unusual, the amount of aid that the Palestinians in the Israeli occupied territories of the West Bank and Gaza have received over the past 18 years has been unprecedented, both in historical terms and in comparison to other developing countries. On average $258 were disbursed in aid per Palestinian in 2004 compared $215 in Bosnia in the 1990s or $235 in East Timor.1 The donor community, as much as the Palestinian leadership, deemed this aid necessary for the success of the peace process. A philanthropy of UN bodies, international organizations- most notably the World Bank and the IMF-, EU members donor’s aid agencies, and local NGOs have been heavily involved in trying to build the foundations of a sound Palestinian economy and to lay the basis for the creation of a viable Palestinian state. Humanitarian aid has also become important as Palestinian per capita income fell after 1996 and again after 2000. The donor community has also given particular attention to projects geared towards promoting democracy and good governance, considered central to any successful Palestinian polity. However, the ability of aid to deliver on its three main promises of developing the economy, building the foundation of the Palestinian state and promoting democracy, proved limited and contentious.2 After more than 18 years of Oslo peace process and huge amount of aid, the Palestinian economy is fragmented, dependent on Israel and 1 Le More, International Assistance to the Palestinians after Oslo, London: Routledge, 2008: 179. -

Prior to joining MEI he spent nine years working for former President Carter’s organization, The Carter Center. He served in the Center’s Conflict Resolution Program, out of Atlanta, GA, before moving to Jerusalem to run the Center’s Israel-Palestine Field Office. Stock led Carter Center efforts to facilitate the reunification of the Palestinian political system and to assert Palestinian sovereignty via international fora. He designed and managed projects targeting the Fatah-Hamas conflict, and implemented programming to monitor and advance political solutions to the Syrian civil war. Prior to joining the Center, Stock worked in Afghanistan on a USAID-funded grant to strengthen local civil society organizations. During the Al-Aqsa Intifada, he lived in the Gaza Strip, working with a Palestinian NGO to design and fundraise for conflict resolution programs targeting the Palestinian community. -

Undergraduate Research Thesis Presented in partial fulfillment of the requirements for graduation with research distinction in Political science in the undergraduate colleges of The Ohio State University By: Jade Musa The Ohio State University April 2021 Project Advisors: Professor Ines Vald푒́z, Department of Political Science Professor Alexander Thompson, Department of Political Science Professor Maurice Stevens, Department of Comparative Studies 1 Introduction: The “two state solution”, a plan for a “Jewish State” and “Arab State” in the United Nations General Assembly recommendation 181 (1948), has failed egregiously since its inception. For a conflict that has numerous times been described as intractable, it is a wonder why the international community and the parties to the conflict themselves would continue to advocate for a plan that has never worked to accomplish its raison d’etre. The Trump Administration took it’s shot at the “intractable” conflict of the century, a sword in the stone for contemporary United States Presidents, for he who solves “peace in the Middle East '' will clearly be the worthiest of them all. The Trump Administration is in fact the first Presidential Administration in the U.S., to endorse a non-two state solution, “discarding” the state aspirations of the Palestinian people and going so far as to recognize Israeli settlements that have long been considered illegal under international law (Crowley and Halbfinger 2020, Beaumont 2020). Although there was international condemnation for the Trump Administration’s Peace Plan, especially considering the controversial U.S. embassy move from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem as well as Netanyahu’s announcement for Annexation, for the most part the Trump administration recognized the “facts on the ground” that previous administrations had allowed to happen under the auspices of a “two state” paradigm. -

By using available Israeli and Palestinian labor data, it first explores the nature of institutional rigidities imposed on labor mobility and the extent to which Palestinian labour migration to Israel has become regulated by security, rather than by economic, considerations. The paper then explores the domestic Palestinian labor market conditions and analyses Israeli demand and the extent to which it has been influenced by the entry of foreign workers into the Israeli labor market. Finally, special attention is given to the growth of Israeli construction sector, particularly in settlements in the West Bank. The paper reveals that Palestinian labor flows are not yet over and that they continue to be a function of Israeli demand as well as of Israel’s demarcation of its borders with the Palestinian territories. Introduction Between 1970-1993, Palestinian labor flows to Israel were a key factor in the integration of the economy of the West Bank and Gaza Strip (WBGS) into Israel. They anchored Palestinian dependence on Israeli goods and trade relations and tied the absorption of Palestinian labor force to Israeli demand for Palestinian goods and services. Palestinian daily commuters to Israel, predominated by male unskilled laborers, represented a third of the employed population and generated over a quarter of the WBGS GNP over most of this period (World Bank 1993, Arnon et al 1997). -
