The Many Deaths of Captain Cook A Study in Metropolitan Mass Culture, 1780-1810 Ruth Scobie PhD University of York Department of English April 2013 i Ruth Scobie The Many Deaths of Captain Cook Abstract This thesis traces metropolitan representations, between 1780 and 1810, of the violent death of Captain James Cook at Kealakekua Bay in Hawaii. It takes an interdisciplinary approach to these representations, in order to show how the interlinked texts of a nascent commercial culture initiated the creation of a colonial character, identified by Epeli Hau’ofa as the looming “ghost of Captain Cook.” The introduction sets out the circumstances of Cook’s death and existing metropolitan reputation in 1779. It situates the figure of Cook within contemporary mechanisms of ‘celebrity,’ related to notions of mass metropolitan culture. It argues that previous accounts of Cook’s fame have tended to overemphasise the immediacy and unanimity with which the dead Cook was adopted as an imperialist hero; with the result that the role of the scene within colonialist histories can appear inevitable, even natural. In response, I show that a contested mythology around Cook’s death was gradually constructed over the three decades after the incident took place, and was the contingent product of a range of texts, places, events, and individuals. The first section examines responses to the news of Cook’s death in January 1780, focusing on the way that the story was mediated by, first, its status as ‘news,’ created by newspapers; and second, the effects on Londoners of the Gordon riots in June of the same year. -

Today, that legacy is being fulfilled by KS on three K-12 campuses and 29 preschools across the state, as well as through summer and community programs, partnerships, and K-12 and college scholarships ($30M) that touch a total of 47,000 students. MIDDLE SCHOOL PRINCIPAL Kamehameha Schools (KS), Hawai‘i, the largest independent school in the U.S., is seeking a new Poʻo Kumu (Principal) to lead its Kula Waena (Middle School), on the Kapālama campus, located on a spectacular 600-acre hillside campus on the island of O‘ahu. The overarching goal is for Poʻo Kumu to lead students, families, alumni, and staff in achieving the compelling educational mission and vision of Kamehameha Schools: that all haumāna (learners) achieve postsecondary educational success enabling good life and career choices. Kamehameha also envisions that learners will have grounding in both Christian and Hawaiian values and become leaders who contribute to their communities, both locally and globally. This new leader will foster an exceptional learning environment that promotes a purposeful, positive, and progressive school ethos in which students and staff feel inspired, engaged, safe, and valued. SCHOOL HISTORY As the last royal descendant of the Kamehameha line, Bernice Pauahi Bishop inherited thousands of acres totaling approximately 9% of the total lands in Hawai‘i, making her the largest landholder in the kingdom. -
In Polynesia: the Samoan Case
Illustrations SAMOA Early European views… In relation to the encounters with Samoans, no drawing was made (or survived) from the Bougainville expedition or from the Lapérouse expedition. For the official and posthumous publication of the Lapérouse expedition narrative (1797), only the `Massacre' was drawn and engraved by Parisian artists (in a style which departed from the 1770-1790s' `noble' representations of Tahitians; see pictures in the section on Tahiti). This view went right through into the German colonial period: the 1797 French engraving was reproduced or redrawn many times, as in this case (pl. 2) for a German account of Samoa. The author, formerly Supreme Judge of `German Samoa', has compared on two adjacent pages what he called in his captions the `Samoan raid on the French' (pl. 2) and the `Hawaiian murder of Captain Cook' (pl. 4). 211 ‘First Contacts’ in Polynesia … and colonial times In 1883, the French had elevated on the site a monument stating that their marines gave their life `for science and for their country'. It is in another German colonial book of 1902 that the picture of this French statement found a place (pl. 3). Position Specification Honolulu Museum of Art Director Position Specification Director Honolulu Museum of Art The Client The Honolulu Museum of Art (HoMA) was founded in 1927 by Anna Rice Cooke, the daughter of a prominent missionary family. She married Charles Montague Cooke, also of a prominent missionary family, and settled in Honolulu, building a home in 1882 on Beretania Street, where HoMA resides today. From the beginning, Anna Rice Cooke, who spoke fluent Hawaiian, wanted a Museum that reflected the unique attributes of Hawai’i’s multicultural makeup. Not bound by the traditional western idea of art Museums, she also wanted to create an institution that showcased the island’s natural beauty and climate in an open and airy environment. Her thoughtful consideration is evidenced in the charming courtyards that interconnect the various galleries throughout the Museum. The permanent collection has grown from 500 works to more than 50,000 pieces spanning 5,000 years. The Museum has one of the largest single collections of Asian and Pan-Pacific art in the United States, including an unrivaled collection by artists of Hawai’i and the Pacific. The collection also contains significant holdings in American and European painting and decorative arts, 19th- and 20th-century art, an extensive collection of works on paper, Asian textiles, and traditional works from Africa, Oceania, and the Americas. Other highlights include the Samuel H. Kress collection of Italian Renaissance paintings and the James A. Michener collection of ukiyo-e prints. The museum presents international caliber special exhibitions that engage a wide variety of audiences including residents and visitors to Hawai'i. The Honolulu Museum of Art features a collection of more than 50,000 works of art spanning 5,000 years including works by Hokusai, van Gogh, Gauguin, Monet, Picasso and Warhol, as well as traditional Asian and Hawaiian art. Community Guide to Hawaiʻi Land Conservation “He aliʻi ka ʻāina; he kauwā ke kanaka.” “The land is a chief; man is its servant.” Mary Kawena Pukui, ʻŌlelo Noʻeau. According to Hawaiian historian Mary Kawena Pukui, “Land has no need for man, but man needs the land and works it for a livelihood.” Introduction / Preface Community members often ask Hawaiian Islands Land Trust, The Trust for Public Land’s Hawaiʻi Program, and other land trusts how they can work with land trusts to save particular lands of natural and cultural significance. This guide is intended to help those community members, and applies to land that: 1) is privately- owned, 2) has significant natural, cultural, or agricultural resources, and 3) is threatened with uses that would harm the resources, such as subdivision and development. Protecting a threatened special place can seem daunting or even impossible. Knowing who to call, what to research, and how to ask for assistance can be confusing. The Trust for Public Land and Hawaiian Islands Land Trust share this guide to clarify the voluntary land conservation process and empower communities across Hawaiʻi in protecting privately owned and threatened lands with cultural, agricultural, and/or ecolog- ical significance. Voluntary land conservation – buying land for public agencies or community organizations or restricting land uses on private property with the cooperation of the landowner — has resolved heated land disputes and created win-win-win solutions that benefit private landowners, our environment, community, and future gen- erations. Where land use is contentious, the process of collaboratively working toward the land’s protection often begins a healing process that can build community resiliency and connections. -

Topics include animals used by Hawaiians, the canoe, fishing, barter, feather-gathering, petroglyphs, gourd water containers, platters, shell trumpets, cultivation, and training for war and weapons used.
