  • 1 2021 State of the Akron Public Schools Thank You All And
2021 State of the Akron Public Schools Thank you all and welcome to my 2021 State of the Akron Public Schools address. It’s good to be here with you today. This year’s speech is my last State of the Akron Public Schools Address as superintendent, a role that I have served in since 2008. So today I want to focus on what has changed over the last 13 years, and provide a few updates on our schools. When COVID struck, we adopted a temporary brand. Although we have always been Adaptive, Responsive and Supportive, never more has that applied than it has in the past calendar year. To underscore the many ways we have been Adaptive, Responsive and Supportive I want to call your attention to the flipbook that summarizes our approach this past year as we faced the COVID-19 pandemic. Most of you have been sent a link to view these materials. They will also be on our website after my speech. Also, Bruce Winges from the Akron Press Club will collect your questions and will present them when I'm done. And thanks again to the Akron Press Club for sponsoring this event. The email address for those of our viewers wanting to ask questions is: [email protected] I would like to acknowledge our Akron School Board members: Dr. N. J. Akbar, President Dr. Derrick Hall, Vice-President Bruce Alexander Diana Autry Patrick Bravo Lisa Mansfield, and Valerie McKitrick. Knapp 2009 Abstract In the period between 1890 and 1920, developments in curriculum, educational philosophies, and culture dramatically affected the size, scope, and interior spaces of public schools in Akron. Through the examination of original blueprints, Board of Education meeting minutes, and a collection of other primary sources, the author traces the history of schools in Akron from the passage of the Akron Law, which established a publicly funded school system, to 1920. The first chapter explores the history of Akron, including its founding and development. It also includes a study of the industries in the area, and their affect on population and culture. Chapter two discusses the period from 1890 to 1908, and ends with an analysis of the Collinwood school fire and its immediate impact on schools in Akron and throughout the nation.

Wednesday, May 27, 2020 Dear APS and Community Social Distancing, Day 70 Along with making our nine high school graduations virtual this year, Akron Public Schools is working on plans to do a virtual Teacher of the Year program. We could argue that this year our Teacher of the Year is every teacher. Parents and families are aware of the hard work their children's teachers have put in since the middle of March to reach out to students through our Connected Learning platform. Keep watching our social media sites for features on our 40+ candidates (one from each school building) and then watch for details on the teacher we select as our final APS Teacher of the Year. Keep washing those hands. Merkle’s Mental Health Moment: Endless decisions can wear us down. Dr. Erich Merkle, Pupil Adjustment Program, Office of Special Education, Akron Public Schools These days, life is made far more complicated by living with the ever-looming threat of viral contagion. We have to pre-plan many of our daily activities and then ensure we take care while doing them. All of this creates psychological and mental exhaustion. Psychologists describe this phenomenon as decision fatigue, but you can overcome it through shifting your thought patterns and putting a few key strategies in place. While you're working on your decision processes and cognitive fatigue, be sure to take a moment to reflect on the importance of psychology in helping us understand ourselves and one another on International Psychology Day. • May 27 is United Nations International Psychology Day Teacher of the Year Building Winners – Kenmore-Garfield and North Clusters This week, we are recognizing the building winners for APS Teacher of the Year.
