James, Superintendent BOARD LETTER REGULAR BOARD MEETING APRIL 15, 2019 REMINDER—NEXT BOARD MEETING The Regular Board Meeting will take place on Monday, April 15, 2019, at 5:30 p.m. in the Board Room at the Sylvester Small Administration Building, 70 North Broadway, Akron, Ohio 44308. If there is need for an Executive Session, it will immediately follow the regular meeting. The next scheduled Akron Board of Education meeting will be held on Monday, April 29, 2019, at 5:30 p.m. in the Board Room at the Sylvester Small Administration Building, 70 North Broadway, Akron, Ohio 44308. LEGAL, CONTRACTS & BOARD POLICY COMMITTEE Bruce Alexander – Co-Chair Morgan Lasher – Co-Chair 2020-2021 School Calendar The School Calendar Committee was responsible for developing two calendar options for the 2020-2021 school year. Copies of the calendar options are included in the Supporting Documents for review. The calendar options were distributed to all school employees for a referendum. The election has been completed and the results tabulated, indicating a preference for Option B. Option B received 67.2% of the votes returned. If there are questions, please contact Tod Wammes, Kathy McVey or the Superintendent. BOARD LETTER 3 APRIL 15, 2019 FINANCE & CAPITAL MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE Patrick L. Bravo – Co-Chair Tim Miller – Co-Chair Athletic Funds – Purpose & Policy Statements & Budgets Section 3315.062, Revised Code, permits a Board of Education to expend funds for student activity programs. “The Board of Education shall adopt by resolution in its minute record, rules, regulations and guideline policies to govern the establishment and operations of the Athletic Funds. (See Public Purpose - 1975 O.A.G. NO. 75-008.) The Board should also approve the individual purpose clauses submitted by each student activity group. In adopting the guideline policies, the Board must consider all applicable legal requirements including court cases, attorney general opinions, Ohio Administrative Code requirements as well as Ohio Revised Code requirement.” Purpose and Policy Statements & Budgets for the Athletic Fund are to be approved by the Board Members. At the Board Meeting of Monday, April 15, 2019, a resolution will be presented to approve the Purpose & Policy Statements & Budgets (on file in the Finance Department) for the following 2018-2019 Athletic Fund Accounts: North HS Baseball – Fryberger Kenmore-Garfield HS Boys Track – Thomas Baseball – Reno Softball – O’Donnell If there are questions, please contact Ryan Pendleton or the Superintendent. Acceptance of Donations The following donations have been received and will be used to support and enhance the academic program: LEGO Bricks 4 Kidz Presentation donated by Henry Lewis for Firestone Park Elementary School’s STEM Family Fun Night on March 14, 2019 – valued at $500.00 3 Program presentations – Weather STG – Youth – by Cleveland Museum of Natural History for 2nd grade students at Sam Salem CLC to support the science curriculum and the Ohio State Standards – valued at $400.00 $250.00 from Investment Network, Inc., to Crouse CLC to purchase supplies for Leadership Exploration “Go Buckets” $780.00 from King PTA to King CLC to purchase cork strips for display of student work throughout the building $800.00 from National Park Trust to STEM MS for 6th grade field trip to CVNP, including transportation Rehabilitation and updating of the Betty Jane CLC baseball field donated by Rubber City Baseball – valued at $1,000.00 The following donations were made to the I Promise School by the LeBron James Family Foundation: Professional development, teacher supplies and printing, and faculty lounge supplies for January 2019 – valued at $15,333.00 Interim Pick-Up Family Dinner on February 7, 2019, Chase Dreams Family Dinner on February 12, 2019, Valentine Dance on February 14, 2019, and Human Resources Open Houses on February 19 & 25, 2019 – valued at $6,049.50 Home Town Hall Dinner, signage, and DJ/music on February 19, 2019 – valued at $7,181.00 68 – Fresh Cuts haircuts and Financial Literacy Family Dinner on February 27, 2019 – valued at $6,025.00 Food and transportation for 150 seventh grade students career outing to Little Tikes on February 28, 2019 – valued at $7,519.00 BOARD LETTER 5 APRIL 15, 2019 The following donations were made to Project Rise: $20.00 from Thomas Fritsch for the Street Card Project $375.00 from Resnik PTA to assist McKinney-Vento families in need 150 pillow cases from Cassandra Rondinella – valued at $750.00 75 tote bags filled with new hygiene products from Jobs for Ohio’s Graduates for families/students experiencing homelessness – valued at $1,200.00 Hall space and dinner provided by Mt. Lebanon Baptist Church for 110 attendees at the Soul Food Dinner on 2/25/19 – valued at $895.00 38 tickets to Peter Pan Ballet, 30 tickets to Lose Your Marbles Dance Concert, 30 tickets to Rosa Parks, 20 tickets to Aesop’s Animals – donated by Akron Civic Theater for families experiencing homelessness to experience live theater – valued at $1,400.00 At the Board Meeting of Monday, April 15, 2019, a motion will be made to accept these donations and authorize the Treasurer to send letters of appreciation. This action supports Focus Area 3: Public Engagement – Maximize business and community partnership opportunities to support student success. MHJF Grant – College & Career Academies Middle School Initiative Akron Public Schools has been awarded a multi-year grant by the Martha Holden Jennings Foundation in the total amount of $500,000.00 to be paid in installments over the next five years, starting with $80,000.00 in the first year.
