The Temple's 1st Vice President is Michael Neumann. Everyone thinks the President has the toughest job. The President puts his face on the job; the 1st Vice President puts his back to the test. The nature of the position in dealing with personnel issues is a daunting task. Michael carries out this job with professionalism and attention to detail. Michael has probably served on every conunittee and has been the mainstay of our Social Action Conunittee for IS years. He tells me when I'm right, and he tells me when I'm wrong. So far my win-loss record is just ahead of the Indians. Michael is not only my friend, he is Temple's friend and we both are the better for him.

God, I have time, I have plenty of time, All the time You gave me, The years of my life, The days of my years, The hours of my days, They are all mine, Mine to fill, quietly, calmly, But to fill completely, up to the brim. God Bless all of those who fill their time with Your work. God Bless this group, who has dedicated their time to Temple Israel and to YOU.

Connecting with the Past

Steve Howell's students at Garrettsville's Garfield High School won the 9th_12th grade creative writing category in Cleveland's Yom Hashoa V'Hagvura competition. To win in a city-wide contest is difficult enough, but in this case, none of Steve's students is Jewish. Rather, they have learned about the Holocaust from their teacher's inspiring course, "Crossroads," on intolerance and Holo caust literature. The students read their poetry on May 5 at Park Synagogue in Cleveland.

This summer, Steve will study in Washington on the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum Fellowship. The purpose is to create a core of Holocaust teachers to implement educational programs throughout the country. Steve is one of fifteen selected to receive the fellowship. During the first week of August, he will be at the museum for intense study and research in order to help facilitate the completion of his project.

"1 proposed two projects. The one 1 like connects one or two adolescents to Holocaust survivors, and for an extended period of time, to let the students hear the stories and to simply be in the presence of a survivor. My hope is that after spending many hours over several weeks with a survivor, the student( s) can then retell that survivor's story. This gives us the opportunity to hear the story about a young person, told by a young person. 1 think that using adolescent writers to share the stories will be especially poignant and perhaps make the information even more accessible to young people. Needless to say, I'm excited to be a part of it."
