A Brand of History of Ludwig Timpani

As timpanist of the Pittsburgh Symphony, William F. Ludwig, Sr. shared a love for the classical works that was only equaled by his passion to perform them on-stage. In 1909, Ludwig, being the purist he was, grew frustrated when the hand-tuned timpani of the day made it difficult to play Wagnerian parts to his liking. But it wasn’t long before his frustration turned to inspiration. With a more practical, portable, pedal-tuned timpani in mind, the accomplished timpanist took on the role of part-time inventor. Not surprisingly, Ludwig’s earliest designs and models failed. Hydraulically operated hoses leaked. Cables stretched. But he was determined and never lost heart – as perfecting the music was far too important to him. Then, in 1921, after years of disappointments, he struck perfection. The Balanced Action™ model remains the standard in timpani design and sound quality held around the world. You need only to hear the difference in a Ludwig Timpani to judge for yourself. Ludwig’s Grand Symphonic timpani series reflects the evolution of design. TIMPANI MODELS & SIZES To this day, Ludwig’s patented Balanced Action™ tuning pedal is widely imitated, yet never Hammered Copper matched. The new rolled-lip copper kettle is specially designed to hang within the suspension ring like a bell, extending the range to a 7th of the most overtone-free pitches ever to sound LTG720KG 20" from a timpani. These one-piece bowls are hammered one at a time. Sturdy pull rods are built within the struts for safety and a clean appearance, while friction blocks sit astride the main LTG723KG 23" horizontal pull rod, supporting the balanced action on both ends of the range. The reliable LTG726KG 26" and fully adjustable pedal activated tuning gauge comes standard with all Ludwig timpani. A double-ring suspension system isolates the kettle completely from the tuning mechanism and Polished Copper Hammered Copper provides great depth of tone. A profile collar that extends the LTP520PG 20" LTP520KG 20" head beyond the kettle edge for greater resonance and pitch definition. KEY IMPROVEMENTS The Grand Symphonic, Professional, and Standard Series Timpani have all been updated with incredible new functionality. 1. New tuning gauge placement will allow these drums to be configured with American or German set-up. All tuning gauge linkage has been removed from the pedal and seamlessly transfered under the base. 2. A permanent third omni wheel has been added under the pedal. This wheel allows 360º fluid movement, allowing the player to have total control of drum placement. 3. Improvements have been made to the rear casters including upgraded braking, larger size wheels with a quick- release function. This allows smooth movement and the ability to quickly remove rear casters with ease.

Today, it is estimated that there are more Ludwig Standard TIMPANI MODELS & SIZES Symphonic Series Timpani in use throughout the world than all other models and brands combined. The Ludwig Standard Timpani Fiberglass Polished Copper kettles are mounted directly to the struts of the drum.
