The four instrument families are: strings, woodwinds, brass and percussion. Today we are going to explore the percussion family. Get your tapping fingers and toes ready! The percussion family includes all of the instruments that are “struck” in some way. We have no official records of when humans first used percussion instruments, but from ancient times, drums have been used for tribal dances and for communications of all kinds. Today, there are more instruments in the percussion family than in any other. They can be grouped into two types: 1. Percussion instruments that make just one pitch. These include: Snare drum, bass drum, cymbals, tambourine, triangle, wood block, gong, maracas and castanets Triangle Castanets Tambourine Snare Drum Wood Block Gong Maracas Bass Drum Cymbals 3 2. Percussion instruments that play different pitches, even a melody. These include: Kettle drums (also called timpani), the xylophone (and marimba), orchestra bells, the celesta and the piano Piano Celesta Orchestra Bells Xylophone Kettle Drum How percussion instruments work There are several ways to get a percussion instrument to make a sound. You can strike some percussion instruments with a stick or mallet (snare drum, bass drum, kettle drum, triangle, xylophone); or with your hand (tambourine). -

I spent the last three summers learning traditional dance- drumming in Ghana, West Africa. I focus primarily on two schools that I have significant recent experience with: the Dagbe Arts Centre in Kopeyia and the Dagara Music and Arts Center in Medie. While at Dagbe, I studied the music and dance of the Anlo-Ewe ethnic group, a people who live primarily in the Volta region of South-eastern Ghana, but who also inhabit neighboring countries as far as Togo and Benin. I took classes and lessons with the staff as well as with the director of Dagbe, Emmanuel Agbeli, a teacher and performer of Ewe dance-drumming. His father, Godwin Agbeli, founded the Dagbe Arts Centre in order to teach others, including foreigners, the musical styles, dances, and diverse artistic cultures of the Ewe people. The Dagara Music and Arts Center was founded by Bernard Woma, a master drummer and gyil (xylophone) player. The DMC or Dagara Music Center is situated in the town of Medie just outside of Accra. Mr. Woma hosts primarily international students at his compound, focusing on various musical styles, including his own culture, the Dagara, in addition music and dance of the Dagbamba, Ewe, and Ga ethnic groups. -

Selected compositions for comparison included Darius Milhaud's Concerto for Marimba, Vibraphone and Orchestra, Op. 278 (1949); David Friedman's and Dave Samuels's Carousel (1985); Raymond Helble's Duo Concertante for Vibraphone and Marimba, Op. 54 (2009); Tera de Marez Oyens's Octopus: for Bass Clarinet and one Percussionist (marimba/vibraphone) (1982). In the course of this document, the author will discuss the uniqueness of FyrStar's instrumentation of nine single reed instruments--E-flat clarinet, B-flat clarinet, alto clarinet, bass clarinet, B-flat contrabass clarinet, B-flat soprano saxophone, alto saxophone, tenor saxophone, and B-flat baritone saxophone, juxtaposing this unique instrumentation to the symbolic relationship between the ensemble, marimba, and vibraphone. i ACKNOWLEDGMENTS I first want to thank God, for guiding my thoughts, hands, and feet. African Drumming in Drum Circles By Robert J. Damm Although there is a clear distinction between African drum ensembles that learn a repertoire of traditional dance rhythms of West Africa and a drum circle that plays primarily freestyle, in-the-moment music, there are times when it might be valuable to share African drumming concepts in a drum circle. In his 2011 Percussive Notes article “Interactive Drumming: Using the power of rhythm to unite and inspire,” Kalani defined drum circles, drum ensembles, and drum classes. Drum circles are “improvisational experiences, aimed at having fun in an inclusive setting. They don’t require of the participants any specific musical knowledge or skills, and the music is co-created in the moment. The main idea is that anyone is free to join and express himself or herself in any way that positively contributes to the music.” By contrast, drum classes are “a means to learn musical skills. The goal is to develop one’s drumming skills in order to enhance one’s enjoyment and appreciation of music. Students often start with classes and then move on to join ensembles, thereby further developing their skills.” Drum ensembles are “often organized around specific musical genres, such as contemporary or folkloric music of a specific culture” (Kalani, p. 72). A Gay The University of The West Indies, Department Civil Engineering, St Augustine, Trinidad and Tobago [email protected] 5805 Acoustics 08 Paris Abstract 1 In this paper the Finite Element Method is used to model acoustic vibrations of steelpanTP PT shells. The steelpan surface is characterized as a three-dimensional compound shell, comprising notes (surfaces with reverse curvature) on a concave ellipsoidal surface attached to a cylindrical shell (the skirt). In this model note and inter-note surfaces are defined by geometric parameters which can be varied to define complex surface geometries. The geometric mesh model is used develop Tenor, Cello and Bass steelpans instruments and a 3D Finite Element shell vibration algorithm is used to demonstrate their vibration characteristics. Modes shapes and frequencies of the composite shell structures are computed for typical configurations of note and skirt geometry. The model demonstrates that there exist many composite natural modes of a playing surface involving the interaction between two or more notes. In addition, it is found that the frequency range of mode shapes associated primarily within skirt vibration overlaps with the musical range of the notes underscoring the potential for “skirt-note” coupling. Steelpan Concerto
Steelpan Concerto PERSONAL NOTES: A CONVERSATION WITH COMPOSER JAN BACH Sarah Bryan Miller, Chicago Reader, April 5, 1996 Composer Jan Bach, a professor of theory and composition at Northern Illinois university and a six- time nominee for a Pulitzer, takes commissions only from ensembles he's never written for before. "I do like new challenges and live in fear - among many phobias; I really believe most composers are nuts - that I will repeat myself if I write for the same combination twice." Bach - no relation to J.S., he's constantly having to say - is a native of Forrest, Illinois, a farming town an hour from Urbana. He started writing music at an early age, and as a student at the University of Illinois, where he received a doctorate in composition, he tested out of a year's worth of theory classes. His teachers have in- cluded Aaron Copland and Thea Musgrave. He's had commissions from, among others, the Vermeer Quartet, the Chicago Brass Quintet, and the Indianapolis Symphony, and his works have been performed at the Aldeburgh Festival and New York City Opera. Bach writes for standard instruments - piano, flute, voice, cello, harp. But he also writes for exotic ones in exotic combinations - flexatone, steel pan. His Concerto for Steelpan and Orchestra, written for Liam Teague, a native of Trinidad and a student at NIU, premiered late last year in performances by the Chicago Sinfonietta. The audience responded to the work with far more enthusiasm than is normally the case with world premieres, and the members of the orchestra seemed to genuinely enjoy themselves. -

Why? Because you can be creative! Although there are time-honored traditions on how to play these instru- ments, in the last 30+ years we have seen and heard several variations on playing techniques and available sounds. Percussionists from around the world, in classical, pop, jazz, studio, and world music settings have been discovering and utilizing these other techniques with great success. It is important that you know and understand the basic playing techniques and available sounds first. These will serve you quite well in concert band, wind ensemble, and orchestral settings. Many of you will have the opportunity to play percussion in a jazz ensemble or perhaps in a band of your own. That’s where these performance variations will really come into play. These variations are based on the performance techniques of similar instruments from cultures around the world, and today’s orchestral players are finding many of these quite useful, too. The most important thing is to have fun! Try these only as a starting point – there is no limit to the use of your own creativity. Triangle When holding the triangle in a clip in the standard fashion, it is possible and often desirable to muffle the sound of the triangle with the heel and/or the fingers of the hand that is holding the clip. The following ex- ample is one way to attain a useful pattern using this technique.
