The Doctor and Leela land on a muddy day in and immediately step into the slimy mucus trail of a large worm. Moments later, it becomes clear that the creature is fleeing, as hunters with dogs and guns are following. Trail of the White Worm is the beginning of what, in loose ways, is a four part series finale for the first series of Fourth Doctor Adventures (FDA’s). I say loosely, most of this episode does continue into the next story, The Oseidon Adventure, the characters, the enemies and some of the story, however, the ‘White Worm’ aspect is very conclusively wrapped up. The titular trail of a white worm is discovered by the Doctor and Leela within the opening seconds of the story, and things take a variety of twists and turns from there. The writing is clever enough that I thought it was going to follow a couple different genre tropes before it finally zeroed in on the real target. : Trail of the White Worm

Audio Drama Review: Trail of the White Worm

The titular trail of a white worm is discovered by the Doctor and Leela within the opening seconds of the story, and things take a variety of twists and turns from there. The writing is clever enough that I thought it was going to follow a couple different genre tropes before it finally zeroed in on the real target. The Trail of the White Worm is the first episode in the two-part “season finale” that wraps up the first series of the Fourth Doctor Adventures. Playing off of a famous piece of folklore, the story finds the Doctor and Leela facing off against a heated foe over the fate of a fantastical creature. Trail of the White Worm is an audio drama based on the long-running British science fiction television series Doctor Who. This audio drama was produced by Big Finish Productions. This is the first part of a two-part story, the second part being The Oseidon Adventure.

The legend dates back to Roman times, at least: a great White Worm, as wide as a man, slithers out of the rocks of the Dark Peak Gap to take animals, sometimes even children, for its food. When the Doctor and Leela arrive in the wilds of Derbyshire, only to get caught up in the hunt for a missing girl, they soon discover that the legend of the Worm is very much alive - even now, in ‘Trail of the White Worm’/’The Oseidon Adventure’ is the first four-part audio adventure from Big Finish featuring the Fourth Doctor and Leela. The story is strangely divided into two separate CDs. The first CD is called ‘Trail of the White Worm’ and the second CD is called ‘The Oseidon Adventure’.
