the Dutch Touch

DUTCH CANADIAN CLUB (EDMONTON) 13312 142 Street NW, Edmonton, AB T5L 4T1 September 2013 Phone: 780 452 2861

Dear members:

Where did our summer go? We are talking September already when you Upcoming Events are reading this. So where did we leave off in our last letter?

We just celebrated the coronation of William Alexander, followed by the FALL SEASON STARTUP Market, Bloomsday, Volunteer Appreciation Day and then we continued with DATES: the Dutch Pavilion at Heritage Days. Stitch N Rip!- Sep 9 A very big compliment to Emmy Diamond and Femke de Vries who once Sewing !Club!- Sep 10 again pulled off another very successful event with the help of countless Klaverjas Club !- Sep 10 volunteers: buyers, sellers, friers, assemblers, disassemblers, runners, Windmills!- Sep 12 drivers, organ grinders, entertainers, phone callers, etc. What a fantastic Concordia Band- Sep 12 team; stressful at times for sure, but that’s when we all step up to the plate. Card Making!- Sep 14 My compliments to all of you, you are just awesome, and I really mean that. Billiard Club !- Sep 18 We set a record for food sales: $45,000.00 gross. And the kitchen just worked Dutch Classes!- Sep 19 awesome. For next year we have to find a solution for the cooling of our precious herring; our Health Inspector was checking it every hour. 2 degrees C over and in the bin they went. GARAGE SALE September 14, 2013 The hall rental is going strong; 2013 booked solid and 2014 is filling up quickly and I advise you to give me a update as soon as possible if you want CARD MAKING a date for any of your club events before all dates are gone. September 14 & 28, 2013

We also have received some sad news again. Peter van Hees passed KLAVERJAS TOURNAMENT away in July, and on August 9 Joop van Beek passed away in his sleep. They September 15, 2013 will surely be missed, and we send our condolences to the families. Our senior maintenance group, Piet Flipsen and Ted & Pat Hoeksta DUTCH LANGUAGE painted our flagpoles. Just imagine these guys on a mobile scissor lift from CLASSES Northgate Industries. Amazing. I hope, when I have reached that age, that I September 19 - November 7, can still do all these things. Having said that, I also thought that if something 2013 would have happened to them, the news people would be there in a flash. So I told myself that some of these jobs should not be done by our volunteers SCANDINAVIAN anymore due to the demographics of our membership. All good things must CHRISTMAS MARKET come to an end. Thanks a lot to our super seniors who have proved that your November - TBA age is as young as you feel. CHILDREN’S SINTERKLAAS A big thank you to Sid Braaksma who donated a beautiful Baby Grand PARTY piano for our stage. December 8, 2013

On a personal note our daughter Michelle had a little boy (9 lb) named NEW YEAR’S EVE PARTY William Avery and when you get to read this Riek and I are off to Holland for 3 December 31, 2013 weeks. Hall rentals will be looked after by Rob Rietveld, phone # stays the same. Thank you all one more time. It is YOU who make this club the envy of our community, take care and look after those who need you.

2 EDITORIAL

September 2013 Dear readers: September already. Time to start thinking about organizing and participating in all our club events for the Fall and Winter seasons. I hope you had a good summer. My summer was pretty busy and that did not even include any vacation trips or visitors from out of town. I had a chance to spend a lot of time with our two youngest grandchildren. But I look forward to getting involved in the club events and activities again. It is always good to get connected with our members during the long winter season. Coming up at the club is the garage sale on September 14. What a great opportunity to get rid of some of your unwanted items and donate them to our club, where you then can pick up some great bargains as well. All proceeds are for the children’s St. Nick Party. We’ll be selling raffle tickets for the beautifully hand-crocheted bedspread there too for the same cause. This was made and donated by Truus de Visser (we’ll have it on display, it’s gorgeous). With the same raffle you can also win a beautiful baby quilt, made and donated by Trudy Moulyn, or a basket with an assortment of Dutch items. This summer our club received some sad news when two of our long-time members passed away and our condolences go out to the Van Hees and Van Beek families. As you can see, we revamped the Dutch Touch a little bit. Both Lisa and I are trying to learn a new program, not without some frustrations, but it’s getting easier already. We really appreciate our advertisers who make it possible to send out the Dutch Touch to our members. Please support them too when you need their goods or services. Lisa, thank you for all you do for the Dutch Touch, I’m sending out some extra hugs to you this month. Jenny Smits - 780-473-0905 - [email protected] NEWS FROM THE BOARD

On behalf of the members of the Board of the Dutch Canadian Club, I welcome everyone back to the Dutch Canadian Centre for the 2013-2014 season. We hope you all had a great summer. All activities and events will be starting up again in September for everyone to attend. Please consult the Upcoming Events Calendar for dates. DCC’s board meetings will be held on the 1st Monday of every month, with Committee meetings taking place immediately before board meetings, every other month (the months with 31 days). We start with an exception: the date of the first board meeting of the season will be on September 9th due to Monday September 2nd being a statutory holiday (Labor day). The board sends best wishes and prayers to Lisa Putters as she is going through some health challenges. Take care of yourself Lisa. Truus de Visser - 780-434-4133 - [email protected]

STITCH ‘N RIP CLUB Our fall season is starting up again and I hope you all had a great summer. For me this summer meant moving after living in the same house for 52 years. Do we ever collect things over the years! But I love my new house although it is a big change. We will be starting again on September 9 at 12 noon and please bring your own lunch. Coffee and tea will be provided. On the third Monday of every month we will knit for charities and will be using the supplies we have on hand. We are hoping that some more ladies will come out those days and do something for the less fortunate. We will take turns picking a charity. Hope to see you all again soon. BILLIARDS CLUB Since Summer is almost over it is time to think about all the activities in the club come September. I would like to call a meeting for the Wednesday night Billiard Club on September 18 at 7:30 pm. Please show your interest so we can have a nice season again like we always have. THE WINDMILLS Hello all! I hope everyone had a great summer. The Windmills will be under way for the fall season starting September 12th, 2013. We hosted two very successful open houses this summer, as well as having quite a few people showing up every Thursday. Two of our long term members celebrated some momentous occasions in July. Julie Wolfert celebrated her 80th Birthday and Fred Hemmes celebrated his 90th Birthday. Congratulations to both of them, and Happy Birthday to everyone who had a Birthday over the summer and to everyone with a Birthday this month. We had a couple of sad happenings as well. We send our condolences to Dora Van Hees and her family with the loss of Peter Van Hees and to Loes Van Beek and her family with the loss of Jo Van Beek. To our members under the weather… hugs and prayers from all your Windmill friends. Who knew! The hottest color of 2013 has been revealed and it’s a true gem. Emerald green, chosen by Pantone as the 2013 color of the year, can easily be added to your wardrobe, décor and life.

The Windmills 2013-14 Membership is due September and Pat Hoekstra is looking after this again this year for us. The rate is $20.00 per person again and must be paid prior to the annual general meeting. On September 26th, 2013 we will have our annual General Meeting. We hope to see you all there. The meeting will be followed by a fish fry.

In the Netherlands Fall is also just around the corner. The air is getting a bit chillier, the leaves are starting to change and the winter jackets are being prepared. But that doesn’t stop the fun from happening. Some of the events you can look forward to are: • Open Momumenten Dag (Open Monument Day/Heritage Days). • Wereldhavendagen (World Port Days). • Netherlands Theatre Festival (Dutch Theatre Festival). • Amsterdam Fringe Festival. The Taste of Amsterdam. • Tocht om de Noord (Journey around the North). It sounds kind of like Edmonton’s August doesn’t it.

Looking forward to seeing you all September 12th! Oh, get your thinking caps on for where to go with our 2014 bus trip. Hopefully we will have better luck this year. Judy Boekholt – 780-467-3701 –[email protected]

10 HERITAGE DAYS 2013 - 38th Servus Heritage Festival What an incredible festival this year! Attendance records were broken each day resulting in a record 380,000 visitors to the park and 3.2 million food tickets sold! Not too surprising given the ideal weather conditions – NO evacuations this year! All of this resulted in a banner year for the DCC. The average sales per pavilion were $39,118. We were better than average by bringing in $45,000 (gross) for the DCC! The Food Bank collected more than 60,000 Kg of food and $60,000 in unused tickets! None of this would be possible without the hard work and dedication of all our wonderful volunteers! YOU make the Dutch Pavilion what it is. Our set-up is growing and we are evolving and learning each year what we can do to make it better. I believe we have the nicest set up at the festival. So THANK YOU! To each and every one of the many volunteers! Whether your contribution is small or large we couldn’t do it without you! 2 more years until the 40th Anniversary of the Festival!! It’s hard to believe that this festival which began from such humble beginnings will be celebrating this major milestone. Femke and I look forward to seeing you all again next year. We are already looking at some menu changes and fresh ideas for the set up! Thank you. Emmy & Femke

TODDLER TUNES TIME Do you have small children or grandchildren? Do you want them to learn to speak some Dutch and sing some Dutch songs? Do you want to learn with them? Do you want to get out of the house and visit with others with similar goals? We have a solution for all of these questions. A new drop-in group at the DCC targeted to children ages five and under, including infants. It will be a casual, fun group (meaning you can show up late and frazzled with mismatched socks and no one will mind) where the first 15-30 minutes will be typically spent singing Dutch songs that kids will be able to dance to, or with actions to follow. We can certainly sing in any language, so could well have English or other favourites as well. Following the singing, we'll bring out the toy boxes and the kids can enjoy play time while the adults can have coffee and chat, or get down and play too. The format is very flexible, so any suggestions are most welcome. There are similar programs in other communities locally, but none in Dutch, that we are copying to create our plan. We believe a weekday morning from about 9:30-11:00 or from 10:00-11:30 would work best. What do you think? What day do you prefer? If you have any level of interest in participating, please contact Fenna Poelzer at [email protected]. We don't need huge numbers to get started, just a few families looking for “gezellige” activities."

Bron: http://anw.inl.nl/search

14 BLOOMSDAY 2013

We would like to thank everyone who came out for our annual Bloomsday on June 9. It’s true what they say: many hands make work easy. Thanks to all the weeders and planters and those who donated bedding plants and perennials, the grounds around our building looked pretty good. We had sunshine and a little shower, perfect for our plants. Thank you Aris for doing the barbecue and John for looking after the bar and everyone else who pitched in with the work. And thank you John for looking after everything throughout the summer. Nel & Vicky Everyone’s name was entered into the draw for the garden bench, which was won by Renie Perreault. Congratulations! See you all next year. Jenny Smits - 780-473-0905 - [email protected]

Golf Poem

In my hand I hold a ball, It hooks and slices, dribbles and dies, white and dimpled, rather small. and even disappears before my eyes. Oh, how bland it does appear, Often it will have a whim, this harmless looking little sphere. to hit a tree or take a swim.

By it’s size I could not guess, With miles of grass on which to land, the awesome strength it does possess. it finds a tiny patch of sand. But since I fell beneath its spell, Then has me offering up my soul, I’ve wandered through the fires of hell. if only it would find the hole.

My life has not been quite the same, It’s made me whimper like a pup, since I chose to play this stupid game. and swear that I will give it up. It rules my mind for hours on end, And take to drink to ease my sorrow, a fortune it has made me spend. but the ball knows...... I’ll be back tomorrow. It has made me yell, curse and cry, I hate myself and want to die. It promises a thing called par, if I can hit straight and far. Stand proud you noble swingers of clubs and losers of balls.... To master such a tiny ball, A recent study found the average golfer should not be very hard at all. walks about 900 miles a year. But my desires the ball refuses, . and does exactly as it chooses.

15 Mushroom Power Ancient remedies, modern supplements Mushrooms have been eaten for thousands of years in Asian countries for their health promoting benefits. In the past several decades researchers have begun to explore the active constituents of certain mushrooms in order to understand their full potential to improve health. While some of these mushrooms are edible, all five discussed here are also available in convenient supplement form. Reishi Reishi (Ganoderma lucidum) is a bitter tasting fungus whose edible (although not palatable) part is the fruiting body of the mushroom. It grows on the wood of deciduous trees, and is notable for its large stalk and fanlike fruiting body. the active constituents are is polysaccharides, triterpenes, and beta-d-glucans. Medicinal qualities The polysaccharides in reishi play an important role in regulating the immune system, enhancing tumour response, and lowering blood pressure. Triterpenes inhibit histamine release, improving seasonal allergies as well as liver function. Reishi is often referred to as an adaptogen, which means it helps the body adapt to stressful environments. Health benefits A wide range of health conditions have been shown to benefit from reishi supplements. These include cancer, high blood pressure, elevated cholesterol, rheumatoid arthritis, chronic fatigue syndrome, and many viruses. Reishi’s immune-boosting effect and ability to improve tumour response make it useful as a complementary alternative treatment in cancer care. other areas of interest stemming from its effect on the immune system involve treating hepatitis and the herpes virus. Some animal studies have shown promise in the use of reishi to reduce plasma glucose l Maitake (Grifola frondosa) Can be eaten as a food, but research shows that the extract, maitake D-fraction holds superior medicinal benefits. the active constituent is 1,6-beta-glucan, a protein-bound polysaccharide, which benefits the immune system and limits tumour proliferation. Medicinal qualities Another constituent, the alpha glucans, have been shown to have effect on insulin sensitivity. Due to its effect on blood sugar, maitake is commonly used in the treatment of diabetes and for weight loss. Over 30 years of research shows maitake mushroom D-fraction to be a potent immune system modulator with antitumour activity. The main research focus continues to be on its use in cancer therapy, either to enhance the effectiveness of chemotherapy or to decrease the side effects of cancer drugs. Health benefits Maitake D-fraction has been shown to shrink cancer tumours and decrease pain caused by chemotherapy. It also alleviates chemotherapy side effects such as hair loss, nausea, and low white blood cell count. It’s also used in the treatment of high blood pressure. elevated cholesterol, and viral infections. Shiitake (Lentinus edodes) is the second most cultivated edible mushroom worldwide. Either the extract or the whole dried mushroom is used in herbal preparations. The active constituents are lentinan,1,3-beta-glucan, and eritadenine. Shiitake Shiitake (Lentinus edodes) is the second most cultivated edible mushroom worldwide. Either the extract or the whole dried mushroom is used in herbal preparations. The active constituents are lentinan,1,3-beta-glucan, and eritadenine. Medicinal qualities The most studied active component is the polysaccharide lentinan, which slows tumour growth rates. The 1,3-beta- glucan is used to ease the side effects of chemotherapy drugs. The eritadenine component is being studied as a way to block cholesterol absorption into the blood. Health benefits By stimulating the immune system, shiitake aide in slowing tumour growth and the progression of AIDS. Shiitake has been shown to lower cholesterol in the blood and may be useful in the prevention of heart disease. Studies show that it also lowers triglycerides and prevents fat deposits in rats fed a high-fat diet. Shiitake contains proteins that stop viruses of many types from replicating.

16 Chaga Chaga (inonotus obliquus) is a slow-growing white rot fungus that grows on birch trees in cold climates in North America, northern Europe, and Russia. Its active ingredients include phenolic compounds, melanins, and lanostane type triterpenoids. Medicinal qualities Chaga is used as a folk medicine in the Baltic areas of Europa, and Russia to treat tumours and other diseases without toxic side effects. Its active components produce antiviral, anti-inflammatory, and antitumour effects. Chaga also strengthens the immune system. Health benefits Chaga has many uses including the treatment of allergies and bacterial infections, and the reduction of inflammation and oxidative stress in the body. A 2010 study showed that chaga and its compounds may hold potential as natural anticancer ingredients in food or pharmaceutical products. Cordyceps Cordyceps (Cordyceps sinensis) is a fungus that is closely related to mushrooms and is used like a medicinal mushroom. It grows in high altitude climates in the Himalayas. Cordyceps grows from a base of caterpillar larvae that the fungus feeds on. Medicinal qualities The active constituents of cordyceps include the polysaccharides, cordycepin, modified nucleosides, and the cyclosporine-like components. Clinical interest of cordyceps revolves around its effeect on the immune system and antitumour activity. Health benefits Traditionally, cordyceps is said to cure 21 ailments including cancer, asthma, diabetes, and viruses. In its fermented form, it can be used to enhance endurance in athletes.

17 CUCUMBERS ARE COOLER THAN YOU THINK 1. Fat busting: Do you ever wonder why women put cucumbers on their eyes to relieve puffiness? The photochemical in cucumbers makes the collagen in your skin tighten, thus the lack of puffiness. Did you know that you can rub a cucumber on a problematic spot of cellulite anywhere on your body to lessen the visibility of it? Did you also know that it has the same effect on wrinkles? Wow, it makes purchasing those fifty dollar creams seem a little silly, doesn’t it? You can also rub a little bit under your kiddo’s eyes after a long bout of crying to avoid that puffy ‘I cried for an hour straight’ look. 2. Defogger: Do you get annoyed when you get out of the shower and you have to fight the fog on the mirror? Who has time for that when the kids will be awake at any moment? Try rubbing a slice of cucumber on the mirror before you hop in and not only will you get a fog-free mirror, but you’ll have a nice smell that will boost your mood. 3. Headaches: If you suffer from headaches from chasing your babies all day, or had a little too much wine with dinner and want to avoid a hangover, eat half of a cucumber before bed. Cucumbers are high in B vitamins, sugar, and electrolytes, and they replenish the nutrients missing in your body to help you avoid a hang over or to beat that headache that’s been threatening to take over. 4. WD-40 replacement: Did you know you can get rid of a squeak by rubbing a cucumber on the hinge? Wow, now you don’t have to tear your garage apart looking for that little can with the red straw, and the baby won’t wake up when you slowly open the nursery door to check on him. 5. Crayon on the walls: Take an unpeeled cucumber and rub the crayon off of the walls in the event that your kiddo left you some art. You can also use this technique to erase a pen mistake. 6. Halitosis killer: Take a slice of cucumber and put it on the roof of your mouth. Hold it there with your tongue for 30 seconds. The photochemical that you love for cellulite and puff reduction will also kill the bacteria that is causing your bad breath. 7. Tarnish remover: If you’re finding tarnish on your stainless steel kitchen faucets and appliances? Rub it off with a cucumber slice. Not only will it remove years of tarnish, it will leave it streak free and your will thank you, and your kids won’t be put at risk from a dangerous chemical. 8. Energy booster: If you’re feeling tired in the afternoon, don’t give Starbucks your five bucks. Instead, grab a cucumber. There are just enough carbohydrates and B vitamins to give you a longer-lasting and healthier boost of energy than soda, coffee, or those health hazard energy drinks. 9. Munchy madness: Did you know that European trappers ate cucumbers for energy and to keep from starving to death? If those big burly manly men can eat a cucumber to keep from starving, you can eat one as a healthy choice when the munchies hit. Slice some up and take them in a small plastic container to the movies if your theater doesn’t offer healthy alternatives to munching on butter soaked popcorn. 10. Frugal facial: Slice up a cucumber and boil it in a pot of water. The chemicals inside of the cucumber will mix with the steam. Remove the pot from heat and lean over it, letting the steam hit you. Your skin will be more radiant and healthy, and you will feel relaxed and rejuvenated. 11. Shoe polish: Cut a slice off of your cucumber and rub it on your shoe. It will not only shine it up, but it will repel water. 12. Pest control: Put three or four slices of cucumber in a small pie tin and place them in your garden. The chemicals in the cucumber have a reaction that pests hate. You won’t smell it, but it will drive them from your garden all year long. Replace them periodically. 13. Sunburn: Sometimes sun block doesn’t always protect your little ones from sunburn. If you have burnt little kiddos you don’t have any aloe, rub some cucumber on them. Many doctors even use cucumber to treat patients with irritated skin and sunburns. 14. Blood pressure: Cucumber has been long used to treat high blood pressure. If you have it, add cucumbers to your daily diet. There is also ongoing research into the use of cucumbers for lowering cholesterol. 15. Constipation remedy: The seeds of a cucumber are a diuretic. If you’re constipated, try eating a cucumber. If you suffer from chronic constipation, add cucumber to your daily diet.”
