It began with a cracker. For the second season in a row Cavan defeated their neighbouring rivals Monaghan, knocking the Farneymen out of the competition and ending their season completely in one fell swoop. The distance from which Raymond Galligan kicked the last-gasp winning score will likely be extended as it becomes eulogised in Cavan football folklore for years to come. Was it 55 metres, or 58, or 60, or more? Nevertheless, it was a sensational effort worthy of winning any game, and fittingly an Ulster Championship classic such as this. West Side Story October 2006 Headmaster’s Welcome A very warm welcome to our Annual Prize Giving. The Abbey school community gathers tonight to celebrate the many outstanding successes of the past year in terms of academic achievements and also in terms of extracurricular activities and our involvement in the wider community. This evening the graduates celebrate that they achieved the best ‘A’ Level results in the school’s history. We continue to glow in the success of the MacRory and Hogan Cup wins and we applaud all who continue to contribute to the disadvantaged, locally in our social outreach programme and internationally in immersion projects to India, Kenya and Zambia. I would like to extend a warm welcome to our graduates. It is great to see you back in the Abbey – many, many congratulations on all your achievements. Also a special welcome back to the Abbey to our distinguished guest speaker tonight Brother Edmund Garvey. Brother Garvey taught in the Abbey from 1970 – 1984 leading an innovative religion department. He was also the community leader in Newry before joining the Province Leadership Team. In 1990 he was elected as assistant to the Congregation Leader in Rome and in 1996, the year of the beatification of Blessed Edmund Rice, he was elected Congregation Leader. During these twelve years Br Garvey travelled to all twenty six countries in which the Christian Brothers had missions. Br Garvey returned to Ireland in 2002 and has served as Director of Communications for the Christian Brothers. We are delighted he accepted our invitation to return to the Abbey and be with us once again in the school which remembers him so fondly.

Headmaster’s Welcome On behalf of the Trustees and Board of Governors I wish to welcome you to our Annual prize-giving. This important evening allows all of us associated with the Abbey school community to celebrate the outstanding successes of the past year and to offer thanks and appreciation to all concerned, past pupils, parents, staff and students. I would like to extend a special welcome to our graduates. It is great to see you back in the Abbey and it is particularly pleasing for the staff of the school to meet again with students and see how they are progressing in the “real world”. I would also like to pay a special welcome and thanks to our distinguished guest speaker tonight Rev. Joe McDonald for accepting my invitation to return to the Abbey, a school which he holds in very high esteem. Each year when we sit down to invite people to act as guest speakers for our various prize-giving ceremonies the first criteria we attempt to follow is a very strong connection to the school. Joe McDonald meets this criteria better than any of his contemporaries. He first arrived at the school to take up a teaching position in the R.E. Department in September 1989 and very shortly later in January 1992 he was appointed Headmaster, a role he carried out until August 1995. As the last Christian Brother to be headmaster in the Abbey Christian Brothers’ he holds a special place in our hearts and minds and we are delighted to welcome him home tonight.
