And just like that, the 2020 Ulster Senior Football Champion is up and running. It began with a cracker. For the second season in a row Cavan defeated their neighbouring rivals Monaghan, knocking the Farneymen out of the competition and ending their season completely in one fell swoop. The distance from which Raymond Galligan kicked the last-gasp winning score will likely be extended as it becomes eulogised in Cavan football folklore for years to come. Was it 55 metres, or 58, or 60, or more? Nevertheless, it was a sensational effort worthy of winning any game, and fittingly an Ulster Championship classic such as this. Paul Faloon (An Dún) Paul is a member of the Drumgath club in County Down and he has been refereeing since 2011. He is a member of the National Referee’s Panel and has refereed a number of Allianz Football League games, most recently the Division 4 clash a few weeks ago between Antrim and Waterford. Paul has taken charge of numerous finals in Down most notably the Minor Championship Final in 2013, the Intermediate Finals 2014 and 2016 and the Senior Championship Final between Burren and Kilcoo in 2017. Last year he took charge of the Ulster Club game between Cargin of Antrim and Derrygonnelly from Fermanagh. Within the province, Paul has taken charge at all levels of Inter-County Football, including numerous Dr McKenna Cup fixtures. He was the man in the middle for the 2015 Ulster Minor Championship Final between Derry and Cavan and the 2019 U20 Final when Tyrone overcame Derry. However, today will be his first game in the Ulster Senior Football Championship. A highly respected referee, Paul is a regular in the Ulster Schools Football fixtures and has refereed all of the biggest games in the Schools calendar, including the 2016 Rannafast Cup Final, 2017 MacLarnon Cup Final and 2018 MacRory Cup Final.

Barry Cassidy (Doire) Barry is a member of the Bellaghy Wolfe Tones Club and has been refereeing since 2002. He has taken charge of county finals at all levels within his native county of Derry, including three Senior Football Finals in 2010, 2013 and this year’s decider when Slaughtneil overcame Magherafelt. Barry joined the National Referee’s Panel in 2011 and that year he refereed the Division 4 League Final between Longford and Roscommon. A year later he was the man in the middle for both the Ulster U21 Football Final as well as the All Ireland Minor Final when Dublin defeated near neighbours Meath. He continued to rise through the ranks, refereeing the 2013 Dr McKenna Cup Final between Tyrone and Monaghan as well as the 2014 All-Ireland U21 Final where Dublin saw off Roscommon. In 2019 he was in Croke Park for the last All-Ireland Club Final to be held on St Patrick’s Day, when Corofin held off the challenge of Dr Croke’s. Yet despite being one of the most accomplished match officials in the country, today will only be Barry’s second game in the Ulster Senior Football Championship, with his first and only game being Donegal’s comfortable victory over Antrim in 2014.
