West Side Story October 2006

Headmaster’s Welcome

A very warm welcome to our Annual Prize Giving. The Abbey school community gathers tonight to celebrate the many outstanding successes of the past year in terms of academic achievements and also in terms of extracurricular activities and our involvement in the wider community. This evening the graduates celebrate that they achieved the best ‘A’ Level results in the school’s history. We continue to glow in the success of the MacRory and Hogan Cup wins and we applaud all who continue to contribute to the disadvantaged, locally in our social outreach programme and internationally in immersion projects to India, Kenya and Zambia.

I would like to extend a warm welcome to our graduates. It is great to see you back in the Abbey – many, many congratulations on all your achievements. Also a special welcome back to the Abbey to our distinguished guest speaker tonight Brother Edmund Garvey. Brother Garvey taught in the Abbey from 1970 – 1984 leading an innovative religion department. He was also the community leader in Newry before joining the Province Leadership Team. In 1990 he was elected as assistant to the Congregation Leader in Rome and in 1996, the year of the beatification of Blessed Edmund Rice, he was elected Congregation Leader. During these twelve years Br Garvey travelled to all twenty six countries in which the Christian Brothers had missions.

Br Garvey returned to Ireland in 2002 and has served as Director of Communications for the Christian Brothers. We are delighted he accepted our invitation to return to the Abbey and be with us once again in the school which remembers him so fondly.

On behalf of the Board of Governors I offer our thanks and appreciation to all associated with tonight’s celebration, past pupils, parents, staff and students.

I wish to thank in a particular way the parents of all the students gathered tonight. I thank them for their continued support and loyalty.

I also wish to thank and congratulate the entire staff of the Abbey for all their best efforts, commitment and dedication.

In conclusion I hope that you all enjoy the presentation evening and I invite you to join us for light refreshments in the school canteen at the end of the evening.

Mr Dermot McGovern Headmaster

Page 2 ANNUAL PRIZEGIVING 2006 Guest Speaker: Brother Edmund Garvey

Brother Edmund Garvey was born in Drogheda, Co. Louth. He was second youngest of a family of seven. For his education, he attended the local Christian Brothers Primary and Secondary Schools. He completed his Leaving Certificate in Colaiste Chiaráin, Bray, Co. Wicklow. He graduated from University College Dublin and did post-graduate studies at The Queen’s University, Belfast and Mount Oliver Institute of Religious Education, Dundalk. He received a Doctor of Humane Letters, Honoris Causa, from Iona College, New Rochelle, New York.

He made his Perpetual Profession as a Christian Brother in 1970. He taught in Belfast and at Abbey Grammar School, Newry, 1970-1984. He was Community Leader in Newry before going to Dublin to join the Province Leadership Team of St.Mary’s. In 1990, he was elected an Assistant to the Congregation Leader in Rome and in 1996, the year of the beatification of Blessed Edmund Rice, he was elected Congregation Leader. In those twelve years Brother Garvey travelled from Rome to all twenty six countries in which the Christian Brothers had missions.

He returned to Ireland in 2002 where he has served as Director of Communications for the Christian Brothers and has chaired a number of committees for the re- organisation of the Christian Brothers Congregation in Ireland and England. In 1999, Brother Garvey attended the second Vatican Synod on the Church in Europe and more recently he has been a member of the Religious Life Commission of the Conference of Religious of Ireland.

He has the happiest of memories of life and work in the city of Newry. He remembers his stay here as something like being at home because his father, who came from south Armagh, often spoke of Newry. He remembers The Abbey as one of the friendliest and most creative educational environments in the network of Christian Brother Schools.
