This whistle-stop Ulster Championship now picks up speed as we enter into the third of its four- weekend lifespan, and today’s meeting of Armagh and reigning champions Donegal begins the final four action. Both these teams have had just shy of two weeks to prepare for this fixture, double the turnaround for tomorrow’s semi-finalists, Cavan and Down. That extra week of breathing space will have been precious to managers Kieran McGeeney and Declan Bonner after arduous quarter-finals over Derry and Tyrone respectively, both hard-fought two-point wins in the swirling rain and biting wind of a harsh Sunday afternoon on November 1st . • If Irish Claim Nobility, Science May Approve
If Irish Claim Nobility, Science May Approve By NICHOLAS WADE Published: January 18, 2006 Listen more kindly to the New York Irishmen who assure you that the blood of early Irish kings flows in their veins. At least 2 percent of the time, they are telling the truth, according to a new genetic survey. The survey not only bolsters the bragging rights of some Irishmen claiming a proud heritage but also provides evidence of the existence of Niall of the Nine Hostages, an Irish high king of the fifth century A.D. regarded by some historians as more legend than real. The survey shows that 20 percent of men in northwestern Ireland carry a distinctive genetic signature on their Y chromosomes, possibly inherited from Niall, who was said to have had numerous sons, or some other leader in a position to have had many descendants. About one in 50 New Yorkers of European origin - including men with names like O'Connor, Flynn, Egan, Hynes, O'Reilly and Quinn - carry the genetic signature linked with Niall and northwestern Ireland, writes Daniel Bradley, the geneticist who conducted the survey with colleagues at Trinity College in Dublin. He arrived at that estimate after surveying the Y chromosomes in a genetic database that included New Yorkers. About 400,000 city residents say they are of Irish ancestry, according to a 2004 Census Bureau survey. "I hope this means that I inherit a castle in Ireland," the novelist Peter Quinn said by phone from the Peter McManus cafe in Chelsea. Some McManuses also have the genetic signature.

  • The Word “Legend”
True Legends are Gathering in Ballybofey… The word “Legend” is an often overused word in describing great sporting prowess or great GAA games and an official definition states “anyone or anything whose fame promises to be enduring”. The exploits of the youthful Clare Hurling team in winning the Liam McCarthy Cup on Saturday evening last, and in doing so beating a well fancied Cork side managed by the great Jimmy Barry Murphy, are already gaining legendary status. The fact that Cork only managed to lead both games for only 90 seconds is a testament to the Clare team but a word of warning….legends are not made in one sporting year !! The more mature readers will recall the fair haired Pat Spillane from the Templenoe Club in the Kingdom of Kerry, setting off on many a solo run from his own half back line and kicking score after score in All-Ireland Finals…I thought that he ran on the tips of his toes..!!!!…then again Legends can perform true feats of skill. True Legend…11 Munster Medals, 2 National Football Medals, 8 All-Ireland Medals and 9 All-Star Awards. Or Colm O Rourke gracefully weaving around flat-footed corner backs to score goals and points at ease, almost like a giant in slow motion. True Legend. 5 Leinster Medals, 3 National Football Legends, 2 All- Ireland Medals and 3 All-Star Awards. Peter Canavan struck fear into whole football teams when he got the ball within scoring distance and his deft touches when scoring goals would be the pride of any Premiership player on €150k a week.

  • West Side Story October 2006
West Side Story October 2006 Headmaster’s Welcome A very warm welcome to our Annual Prize Giving. The Abbey school community gathers tonight to celebrate the many outstanding successes of the past year in terms of academic achievements and also in terms of extracurricular activities and our involvement in the wider community. This evening the graduates celebrate that they achieved the best ‘A’ Level results in the school’s history. We continue to glow in the success of the MacRory and Hogan Cup wins and we applaud all who continue to contribute to the disadvantaged, locally in our social outreach programme and internationally in immersion projects to India, Kenya and Zambia. I would like to extend a warm welcome to our graduates. It is great to see you back in the Abbey – many, many congratulations on all your achievements. Also a special welcome back to the Abbey to our distinguished guest speaker tonight Brother Edmund Garvey. Brother Garvey taught in the Abbey from 1970 – 1984 leading an innovative religion department. He was also the community leader in Newry before joining the Province Leadership Team. In 1990 he was elected as assistant to the Congregation Leader in Rome and in 1996, the year of the beatification of Blessed Edmund Rice, he was elected Congregation Leader. During these twelve years Br Garvey travelled to all twenty six countries in which the Christian Brothers had missions. Br Garvey returned to Ireland in 2002 and has served as Director of Communications for the Christian Brothers. We are delighted he accepted our invitation to return to the Abbey and be with us once again in the school which remembers him so fondly.
