Headmaster’s Welcome On behalf of the Trustees and Board of Governors I wish to welcome you to our Annual prize-giving. This important evening allows all of us associated with the Abbey school community to celebrate the outstanding successes of the past year and to offer thanks and appreciation to all concerned, past pupils, parents, staff and students. I would like to extend a special welcome to our graduates. It is great to see you back in the Abbey and it is particularly pleasing for the staff of the school to meet again with students and see how they are progressing in the “real world”.

I would also like to pay a special welcome and thanks to our distinguished guest speaker tonight Rev. Joe McDonald for accepting my invitation to return to the Abbey, a school which he holds in very high esteem. Each year when we sit down to invite people to act as guest speakers for our various prize-giving ceremonies the first criteria we attempt to follow is a very strong connection to the school. Joe McDonald meets this criteria better than any of his contemporaries. He first arrived at the school to take up a teaching position in the R.E. Department in September 1989 and very shortly later in January 1992 he was appointed Headmaster, a role he carried out until August 1995. As the last Christian Brother to be headmaster in the Abbey Christian Brothers’ he holds a special place in our hearts and minds and we are delighted to welcome him home tonight.

I wish to thank in a particular way the parents of all the students gathered tonight. I thank them for their continued support and loyalty to the Abbey.

I offer my heartfelt congratulations to all our students on their comprehensive range of success both in the academic field and in their extracurricular pursuits.

In conclusion, I hope that you enjoy the various presentations and I invite you to join us for light refreshments in the school canteen at the end of the evening.

Mr Dermot McGovern Headmaster
