COUNCIL NEWS 18/05/2011

There has been no breakthrough in the doctor situation but a couple of names have been passed on to Council as possible prospects. Council has also made contact with a commercial health company which operates as a practice manager in several other towns in the western region. This company runs the practice, employs the doctors and handles the billing in these surgeries, and has expressed initial interest in looking at Grenfell. Arrangements are in hand to meet with the company management, hopefully this week, to see if our situation is sufficiently attractive to them for location and profitability.

Property owners and local organisations will shortly receive advice of the new 10 year Community Plan to be prepared by Council. There will be a number of public consultation forums where people can have their say about what they would like to see happen in the shire over the next 10 years, and there will also be the opportunity to express opinions over the internet. Keep watching for the public notices and try to attend one session if you possibly can.

A round of public consultation has just concluded for the revision of the Local Environmental Plan. Most of the standards in the present plan will be retained but the format will be changed to suit the State Government’s new standard template. This seems to be one project that the new Government is continuing with. Once the exhibition period concludes Council will consider any submissions and report to the Department of Planning, then the Minister. It is hoped the new LEP will be gazetted later this year.

Readers may have noticed photos of some irreverent paintings in the press. These paintings are usually of well known figures and together make up the Bald Archy Exhibition which the Grenfell Art Gallery has been fortunate enough to gain for August this year. The winning artwork is carefully selected by a sulphur crested cockatoo, and this year it features Julian Assange doing something disrespectful to (in?) Uncle Sam’s top hat. This show should be a ripper.

A reminder to all residents that the draft Management Plan for 2011/2012 will be tabled at the monthly Council Meeting this Thursday. The Management Plan sets out the property rates and the works programme for next year and should be of interest to everyone in the shire. Members of the public are welcome to attend, or you can subsequently view the document on Council’s website during the 28 day exhibition period.

T V LOBB GENERAL MANAGER

ASSISTANCE AVAILABLE TO FARMERS AND SMALL BUSINESSES

Farmers and small businesses within the Shire of Weddin are reminded that applications for the Natural Disaster Relief Assistance and Recovery Grants will close on 30 June 2011.

Eligible small businesses and farmers who sustained direct damage as a result of the November - December 2010 and January 2011 floods can apply for a grant up to $15,000 to assist with clean-up and immediate restoration costs associated with their business. For eligible farmers costs can include damage to farm buildings, crops and/or pastures, livestock husbandry needs and/or removal of dead livestock, fodder purchases, fencing, equipment and/or plant and infrastructure. It is not intended to cover loss of income due to destroyed crops. For small businesses, eligible costs relate to clean-up and restoration of trading (to continue or commence in a temporary location).

The NSW Rural Assistance Authority will assess the general eligibility of each application and advise successful applicants of an "approval in principle" in writing. Grants will then be paid to recipients on the subsequent production of tax invoices or receipts. These invoices/receipts must then be received by the NSW RAA before COB 30 September 2011.

The grants are not intended to cover damage covered by insurance or your own labour costs.

A Natural Disaster Relief Scheme is also available by way of a loan up to a maximum of $130,000. Again this loan is to assist with essential working capital and the replacement and repair of damage caused to the property and associated improvements not covered by insurance.

For further clarification on any assistance available, help is available through the Rural Financial Counselling Service - Southern Region, office. This assistance is provided by the Australian Government Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry and is free of charge and completely confidential. Your local Rural Financial Counsellor can also help with:

analysing your cashflow budget and viability preparing budgets, and profit and loss statements identifying areas of risk in your business improving your ability to plan your business operations identifying government assistance you might qualify for completing action plans you may need to develop to receive grants or income assistance identifying any advice and training you may need preparing for a visit to a succession planner

Please contact Lisa Minogue, Rural Financial Counsellor, at 89 - 91 Main St West Wyalong or by phoning 02 - 6972 1688.

Appointments can be made in the office or on farm for your convenience.
