It turns out that he was bipolar, and suffer the dramatic mood swings that this illness brings. After a period in hospital and a large dose of the correct drugs he is back to his normal chirpy self. The collection of articles in this book show him at his belligerent and grumpy best. His articles are to the point, occasionally fairly blunt, but this is softened but wit and humour, often at his own expense, but also life in general. Random anecdotes, a spot of ranting and some interesting birding titbits. May 18, Jennifer rated it liked it Shelves: library-loanreadnon-fiction. Bill Oddie has enhanced the life of the nation and certainly mine. Yet I'm Bill Oddie Unplucked: Columns sure he'd be described as a National Treasure and this collection probably demonstrates why. He is a prickly character who has difficulty letting go of things. Inde Bill Oddie has enhanced the life of the nation and certainly mine. But overall it does make it a somewhat uncomfortable read. However, he's been doing lots of interesting things and he writes about ordinary things in an unforced but entertaining way I particularly enjoyed his blogging work here. He blends real knowledgeability of and passion for some Blogs and Musings of wildlife ie serious birding and his frustration over his exploitative robins and bewilderment about what happened to his tadpoles. • Lancashire Countryside Directory for People with Disabilities
Lancashire Countryside Directory for People with Disabilities first edition Whatever your needs, access to and enjoyment of the countryside is rewarding, healthy and great fun. This directory can help you find out what opportunities are available to you in your area. Get yourself outdoors and enjoy all the benefits that come with it… Foreword written by: Bill Oddie OBE This directory was designed for people with a disability, though the information included will be useful to everyone. Lancashire’s countryside has much to offer; from the gritstone fells of the Forest of Bowland to the sand dunes of the Sefton Coast. There are some great opportunities to view wildlife too, including red squirrels and hen harriers. It is more than worth taking that first step and getting yourself involved in your local countryside, regardless of your abilities. For people interested in wildlife and conservation there is much that can be done from home or a local accessible area. Whatever your chosen form of countryside recreation, whether it’s joining a group, doing voluntary work, or getting yourself out into the countryside on your own, we hope you will get as much out of it as we do. There is still some way to go before we have a properly accessible countryside. By contacting Open Country or another of the organisations listed here, you can help us to encourage better access for all in the future. Published in Summer 2014 Using the Directory Throughout the Directory you will see some symbols. These are to help you see what kind of facilities or information is available.

  • Stories of Natural History Film-Making from the BBC
Networks of Nature: Stories of Natural History Film-Making from the BBC Gail Davies Thesis submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Submitted 1997 Awarded 1998 University College London Gail Davies Phd: Networks of nature Abstract In May 1953 the first natural history television programme was broadcast from Bristol by naturalist Peter Scott and radio producer Desmond Hawkins. By 1997 the BBC's Natural History Unit has established a global reputation for wildlife films, providing a keystone of the BBC's public service broadcasting charter, playing an important strategic role in television scheduling and occupying a prominent position in a competitive world film market. The BBC's blue-chip natural history programmes regularly bring images of wildlife from all over the globe to British audiences of over 10 million. This thesis traces the changing aesthetics, ethics and economics of natural history film-making at the BBC over this period. It uses archive material, interviews and participant observation to look at how shifting relationships between broadcasting values, scientific and film-making practices are negotiated by individuals within the Unit. Engaging with vocabularies from geography, media studies and science studies, the research contextualises these popular representations of nature within a history of post-war British attitudes to nature and explores the importance of technology, animals and conceptions of the public sphere as additional actors influencing the relationships between nature and culture. This history charts the construction of the actor networks of the Natural History Unit by film- makers and broadcasters as they seek to incorporate and exclude certain practices, technologies and discourses of nature.
