Purchased by the Library Company, 1880. 4 n July 1, 1731, Benjamin Franklin and a number of his fellow members of the Junto drew up “Articles of Agreement” to Ofound a library. The Junto was a discussion group of young men seeking social, economic, intellectual, and political advancement. When they foundered on a point of fact, they needed a printed authority to set- tle the divergence of opinion. In colonial Pennsylvania at the time there were not many books. Standard English reference works were expensive and difficult to obtain. Franklin and his friends were mostly mechanics of moderate means. None alone could have afforded a representative li- brary, nor, indeed, many imported books. By pooling their resources in pragmatic Franklinian fashion, they could. The contribution of each cre- ated the book capital of all. Fifty subscribers invested forty shillings each and promised to pay ten shillings a year thereafter to buy books and maintain a shareholder’s library. -

RICHARDSON THELAST DECADE OF THE nineteenth century and the first decade of this century witnessed some activity in the collecting of historical children’s books, but that flurry did not extend much beyond New England generally, and the Connecticut Historical Society and the American Antiquarian Society specifica1ly.l A resurgence of interest in collecting occurred in the 1920s and 1930s. In 1938 six articles appeared in Library Journal under the title “Collections of Rare Children’s Books: A Symposium.” The series had been prepared under the auspices of the Publicity Committee of the American Library Association (ALA) Section for Library Work with Children. -

Museum Grants for African American History and Culture Program The Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture Abstract There is a growing demand nationwide for culturally relevant curricula in the nation’s K-12 classrooms. In New York, the State Education Department plans to mandate that all schools implement culturally relevant pedagogical methods, including the use of curricula that draw on a broader array of social experiences, while nationally a recent report by the Southern Poverty Law Center demonstrated both that students are under-educated about the history of slavery and that teachers recognize that they have not been well-prepared to teach it. With its rich collections of more than 11 million items and its strong relationships with local educators, the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, a research unit of The New York Public Library, is uniquely poised to meet these needs. Through the proposed Schomburg Curriculum Project, the Schomburg Center will engage a consultant Curriculum Writer to develop a history curriculum for grades 6-12 focusing on key themes in African American history that can be illustrated using the Schomburg Center’s rich collections. -
Mapping Worldcat's Digital Landscape
106 LRTS 51(2) Mapping WorldCat’s Digital Landscape By Brian F. Lavoie, Lynn Silipigni Connaway, and Edward T. O’Neill Digital materials are reshaping library collections and, by extension, tradi- tional library practice for collecting, organizing, and preserving information. This paper uses OCLC’s WorldCat bibliographic database as a data source for examining questions relating to digital materials in library collections, including criteria for identifying digital materials algorithmically in MARC21 records; the quantity, types, characteristics, and holdings patterns of digital materials cataloged in WorldCat; and trends in WorldCat cataloging activity for digital materials over time. Issues pertaining to cataloging practice for digital materials and perspectives on digital holdings at the work level also are discussed. Analysis of the aggregate collection represented by the combined digital holdings in WorldCat affords a high-level perspective on historical patterns, suggests future trends, and supplies useful intelligence with which to inform decision making in a variety of areas. Introduction rint books have been the traditional focus of library collections; indeed, the Pword library itself originates from the Latin word for book, liber. Over time, library collections have diversified to embrace a variety of information resources, such as scholarly journals, photographs, microfilm, and videotapes (the authors note that a Columbus-area public library even circulates artwork to its users). But after print books, one may argue that digital materials have made the greatest impact on the nature and shape of library collections. The reverberations of this impact are still being felt and the long-term consequences for traditional print book collections are yet determined. -

The tour was developed as part of the Malcolm X Boulevard Streetscape Enhancement Project. Welcome! Welcome to Malcolm X Boulevard in the heart of Harlem! This online virtual tour highlights the landmarks of Harlem and is available in printable text form. Introduction: This tour was developed by the Department of City Planning as part of its Malcolm X Boulevard Streetscape Enhancement Project. The project, which extends from West 110th to West 147th Street, seeks to complement the ongoing capital improvements for Malcolm X Boulevard and take advantage of the growing tourist interest in Harlem. The project proposes a program of streetscape and pedestrian space improvements, including new pedestrian lighting, new sidewalk and median landscaping and the provision of pedestrian amenities, such as seating and pergolas. The Department has been working with Cityscape Institute, the Upper Manhattan Empowerment Zone, the New York City Department of Transportation, and the Department of Design and Construction, and has received implementation funds totaling $1.2 million through the federal TEA21 Enhancement Funding program for the proposed pedestrian lighting improvements. As one element of the project, the Department developed this guided tour of the boulevard and neighboring blocks. The tour provides an overview of local area history, and highlights architecturally significant and landmarked buildings, noteworthy cultural and ecclesiastical institutions and other points of interest. A listing of former famous jazz clubs, such as the Cotton Club and Savoy Ballroom, is also provided. Envisioned as an information resource for residents and visitors, the tour is also available in printable text format for use as a hand-held guide for a self-guided walking tour along the boulevard. -

From Apprentice to Journeyman to Partner: Benjamin Franklin's Workers and the Growth of the Early American Printing Trade The lyf so short, the craft so long to lerne. —Geoffrey Chaucer, "The Parliament of Fowls" ANY APPRENTICES IN THE EARLY American printing trade must have felt as Chaucer's fabled craftsman did. Beginning M at a young age, they commonly spent up to seven years as contractually bound, unpaid laborers. They usually had to promise not to gamble, fornicate, frequent taverns, marry, and buy or sell or divulge secrets of the business. Apprentices worked long hours, often performed menial tasks, and were subjected to beatings—all without pay. Yet apprentices endured the arduous existence because it held for them the promise of eventual self-employment. Their goal was to learn a craft they could practice when their apprenticeship expired.1 The apprenticeship system was essential to the growth of the early American press. On April 12, 1966, the Landmarks Pre serv~tion Commission held a public hearing on the proposed designation as a Landmark of the New York Public Library and the proposed designation of the related Landmark Site. (Item No. 28). Two witnesses spoke in favor of designation. The Commission continued the public hearing until June 14, 1966. (Item No. 1). At that time one sepaker favored designation.
