This text can also be interpreted as the commencement of, and subsequent intense interest in the way superhero characters often portray a ‘camp’ sensibility (Medhurst, 1991) representative of a queer performative identity (Butler, 1993).

  • Censorship of Anime in Italian Distribution Ilaria Parini
Document generated on 10/02/2021 1:04 a.m. Meta Journal des traducteurs Translators’ Journal Censorship of Anime in Italian Distribution Ilaria Parini La manipulation de la traduction audiovisuelle Article abstract The Manipulation of Audiovisual Translation Editing of anime – Japanese cartoons – is a process through which the product Volume 57, Number 2, June 2012 is altered in order to make it appropriate for the public. Such a practice is quite common all over the Western world, and Italy is no exception. Japanese anime URI: https://id.erudit.org/iderudit/1013948ar are not designed only for an audience of children, and there exist different DOI: https://doi.org/10.7202/1013948ar types of products aimed at viewers of different ages; consequently, in Japan anime are shown at various time slots according to their characteristics. In Italy, on the contrary, cartoons are generally considered a product targeted See table of contents exclusively at children, and even those anime which were originally designed for an older audience are broadcast during the protected time slot and therefore have to comply to certain standards regarding their content and the Publisher(s) type of language spoken. Censorship thus tends to take place both on the visual and the verbal levels: scenes considered inappropriate are removed from the Les Presses de l’Université de Montréal story, the plot is often changed, the text is frequently domesticated in its references to the Japanese culture, and the language is flattened. Italian ISSN translators take an active part in the editing of anime: as they are the first ones 0026-0452 (print) to actually see the episodes, they are supposed to report to their commissioners 1492-1421 (digital) any ambiguous element they come across, and they perform (self)censorship on the verbal level, manipulating the dialogue exchanges as is expected by the translation company.

Signed by the final Examining Committee: Chair Marc Steinberg, PhD Examiner (Internal) Beenash Jafri, PhD Examiner (External) Bryan Hikari Hartzheim, PhD Supervisor Marc Steinberg, PhD Approved by Marc Steinberg, PhD, Graduate Program Director 2020 Annie Gérin, PhD, Dean of Faculty iii ABSTRACT Moon Prism Boys: The Magical Boy as Queering Device Alexandre Girard Vermeil Through a queer lens, this thesis examines the role that the magical boy character plays in the manga Magical Boy Majorian (2007-2008), and in season 15 of the popular magical girl genre anime franchise Pretty Cure, entitled Hugtto! PreCure (2018-2019). Using queer theory and gender studies research, this thesis argues that the magical boy figure challenges problematic forms of masculinity by performing what I call ‘shōjoness,’ a particular form of feminine aesthetic mainly found in shōjo (for girls) manga, and anime. The thesis contends that henshin (transformation) sequences allow a space for gender negotiation, which disrupts a heteronormative structure through the crossing, and blending, of gender expression and form.

ABSTRACT POLITICAL SCIENCE FULLER, FRANK R. B.A. OGLETHORPE U1JIVERSITY, 2000 M.S. GEORGIA INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY, 2001 THE ATOMIC BOMB: REFLECTIONS IN JAPANESE MANGA AND ANIME Committee Chair: Robert B. DeJanes, Ph.D. Dissertation dated May 2012 This study examines post-World War II “anime” and manga based on the bomb’s after-effects and changes in Japanese mindsets resulting from the War, especially as inspired by Osamu Tezuka and later artists influenced by his works. This study theorized that Japanese political culture elements, through particular plotlines, could be traced in manga and anime themes carrying hidden messages repeatedly referencing the bomb’s effects on Japan, citing Tezuka’s influence, in the 1945-65 and 1985-95 periods, in the post-apocalyptic, science fiction, and fantasy genres. Case studies were used to qualitatively assess data for historical evidence of Tezuka’s influence across specific genres, from scholarly studies and reviews of manga. comics, and related media. Evidence ofTezuka-inspired themes, such as hope out of endless devastation (the phoenix analogy) and man’s destructive obsession with technology by conquering nature (dependent variables), were analyzed from a comparativist, historical viewpoint, as influenced by atomic bomb-related themes. The researcher explains the Japanese fascination with technology and why many anime show status quo disagreements. Japan absorbed trauma from the bomb, was invaded by foreigners, and faced a complete overhaul. Post-war, the economy grew rapidly, but Japan must reduce rigidity and social conformity. The Japanese are aware of the US role in their dual defense arrangement; Japan felt discomfort as a junior-partner in the 1950s-60s.

In my thesis, I will discuss and explore the following questions and current debates about anime as national Japanese product: - What is the importance of anime for the Japanese economy? - Has anime - as part of Japanese popular culture - become a soft power for Japan? - What is the cultural and national identity of anime? - Is anime a transnational product? Anime is the Japanese word for animation (brought to the screen, through series or film).

  • Animation Studies – Vol.3, 2008 33
Animation Studies – Vol.3, 2008 María Lorenzo Hernández Visions of a Future Past Ulysses 31, a Televised Re-interpretation of Homer’s Classic Myth This paper gives an overview of the animated series Ulysses 31 (1981), a French-Japanese co- production based on the epic poem The Odyssey, which introduced children and young audiences to Greek myths, relocating the original narratives into futuristic contexts such as the 31st century. Twenty-five years later Ulysses 31 remains a cult series, however it is also largely unknown since the images it invokes are buried in the memories of childhood. Although the series substitutes the wooden ships with spacecrafts crossing the universe of Olympus, Ulysses 31 manages to capture some of the original relationships within Homer’s thesis, in spite of their eccentric portrait. The heavy use of pastiche takes us back to the 1980s and the emergence of the ‘new’ fantasy-driven science fiction cinema; thus it is important to examine and discuss the series’ employment of futurist aesthetics and technology in its exposé of classic mythology. Ulysses 31 is a good example of a successful series from that period. Employing traditional animation throughout -such as painting on cells, cut-outs and the use of the multiplane camera- the art of the series offers a distinctive style that would be virtually impossible to reproduce through more recent technology. This paper will examine this aesthetic and compare it to similar shows from that period in order to locate its place in ‘the future past’. Ulysses as a Cosmic Adventurer One of the characteristics of the series that becomes apparent initially is the noticeable coherence of the series’ concept.

KADIR HAS UNIVERSITY INSTITUTE OF SOCIAL SCIENCES M.A. PROGRAM IN COMMUNICATION SCIENCES LANDSCAPES OF GLOBALIZATION: ANIMANGA OTAKU CULTURE IN ISTANBUL AND BERLIN M.A. in Communication Sciences ZEYNEP ALTUNDAĞ Advisor Associate Professor LEVENT SOYSAL Istanbul, 2009 ABSTRACT LANDSCAPES OF GLOBALIZATION: ANIMANGA CULTURE IN ISTANBUL AND BERLIN Zeynep Altundağ M.A. Program in Communication Studies Advisor: Assoc. Prof. Dr. Levent Soysal June 2009 Anime, manga and otaku culture, which drew considerable attention from the world youth culture in the 1990s, was formed within the popular culture wave that emerged in Japan especially after the 1970s, and has achieved its own market internationally within the new world policy of Japan after World War II. The alternative types, colorful and ideal characters and worlds provided has attracted the attention of world youth, academicians, and researchers. As this study focuses on the effects of anime, manga, and otaku cultures on the youth living in Istanbul, it aimed to evaluate this effect within the context of the boundaries of globalization. The fundamental problematic of this study is to evaluate and present this culture with its new, exclusive form of locality as a result of the interactions in each locality. This study was conducted as comparative one, with field studies performed in Istanbul and Berlin within the scope of anime and manga culture, and explains the existence and characteristics of manga and otaku cultures in Istanbul and Berlin through global culture, and to some academicians and researchers, it is a critical perspective on some views as to the problem of belonging related to different cultural formations in the world, in-betweenness, cultural schizophrenia, and being the other.
