  • Apichatpong Weerasethakul
UNKNOWN FORCES: APICHATPONG WEERASETHAKUL April 18 – June 17, 2007 hold of and ask what I should do. I am consulting a fortune teller now for what the next film should be. She told me the main character (light skin, wide forehead), the locations (university, sports stadium, empty temple, mountain), and the elements (the moon and the water). RI: The backdrops of much of your work accentuate feelings of aloneness and isolation from others. Films like Tropical Malady (2004) and Worldly Desires (2005) traverse remote recesses of distant, even enchanted jungles. In FAITH (2006), you leave earth entirely in search of greater solitude in outer space. You seem interested in or at least drawn to obscure or enigmatic sites that have been left relatively unexplored, untouched, unimagined… AW: That’s what I got from the movies. When you are in a dark theater, your mind drifts and travels. In my hometown when I was growing up, there was nothing. The movie theater was a sanctuary where I was mostly addicted to spectacular and disaster films. Now, as a filmmaker, I am trying to search for similar feelings of wonder, of dreams. It’s quite a personal and isolated experience. Tropical Malady is more about a journey into one’s mind rather than Apichatpong Weerasethakul a real jungle. Or sometimes it is a feeling of “watching” movies. RI: Can you speak about your use of old tales and mythologies in your work? What significance do they hold for you? AW: It’s in the air. Thailand’s atmosphere is unique. It might be hard to understand for foreigners.

  • 1997 Sundance Film Festival Awards Jurors
1997 SUNDANCE FILM FESTIVAL The 1997 Sundance Film Festival continued to attract crowds, international attention and an appreciative group of alumni fi lmmakers. Many of the Premiere fi lmmakers were returning directors (Errol Morris, Tom DiCillo, Victor Nunez, Gregg Araki, Kevin Smith), whose earlier, sometimes unknown, work had received a warm reception at Sundance. The Piper-Heidsieck tribute to independent vision went to actor/director Tim Robbins, and a major retrospective of the works of German New-Wave giant Rainer Werner Fassbinder was staged, with many of his original actors fl own in for forums. It was a fi tting tribute to both Fassbinder and the Festival and the ways that American independent cinema was indeed becoming international. This book covers the linguistic picture of Flemish everyday life-world that is ap- proached from the point of view of the language structures typical for tussentaal (Flemish interlanguage), a spoken variety of Belgian Dutch. The study’s focus lies in finding those features of tussentaal that provide an image of daily reality and by means of which the speaker can model it in accordance with their needs. For the pur- poses of this research, a corpus of ten Flemish movies (approx. 18 hours of recordings, 83.000 words) has been put together. The movie dialogues are examined within the methodological framework of ethnolinguistics. KEY WORDS: Flanders, Belgium, Belgian Dutch, tussentaal, Flemish interlanguage, linguistic picture of the world, everyday life-world Katarzyna Wiercińska, Faculty of English, Adam Mickiewicz University, al.

Aural Auteur: Sound in the Films of Rolf de Heer. 2 Aural Auteur: Sound in the Films of Rolf de Heer. ABSTRACT. Aural Auteur: Sound in the Films of Rolf de Heer. An interpretative methodology for understanding meaning in cinema since the 1950s, auteur analysis is an approach to film studies in which an individual, usually the director, is studied as the author of her or his films. The principal argument of this thesis is that proponents of auteurism have privileged examination of the visual components in a film-maker’s body of work, neglecting the potentially significant role played by sound. The thesis seeks to address this problematic imbalance by interrogating the creative use of sound in the films written and directed by Rolf de Heer, asking the question, “Does his use of sound make Rolf de Heer an aural auteur?” In so far as the term ‘aural’ encompasses everything in the film that is heard by the audience, the analysis seeks to discover if de Heer has, as Peter Wollen suggests of the auteur and her or his directing of the visual components (1968, 1972 and 1998), unconsciously left a detectable aural signature on his films.
