  • Singleton Molecular Species Delimitation Based on COI-5P
Zhou et al. BMC Evolutionary Biology (2019) 19:79 https://doi.org/10.1186/s12862-019-1404-5 RESEARCHARTICLE Open Access Singleton molecular species delimitation based on COI-5P barcode sequences revealed high cryptic/undescribed diversity for Chinese katydids (Orthoptera: Tettigoniidae) Zhijun Zhou*, Huifang Guo, Li Han, Jinyan Chai, Xuting Che and Fuming Shi* Abstract Background: DNA barcoding has been developed as a useful tool for species discrimination. Several sequence- based species delimitation methods, such as Barcode Index Number (BIN), REfined Single Linkage (RESL), Automatic Barcode Gap Discovery (ABGD), a Java program uses an explicit, determinate algorithm to define Molecular Operational Taxonomic Unit (jMOTU), Generalized Mixed Yule Coalescent (GMYC), and Bayesian implementation of the Poisson Tree Processes model (bPTP), were used. Our aim was to estimate Chinese katydid biodiversity using standard DNA barcode cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI-5P) sequences. Results: Detection of a barcoding gap by similarity-based analyses and clustering-base analyses indicated that 131 identified morphological species (morphospecies) were assigned to 196 BINs and were divided into four categories: (i) MATCH (83/131 = 64.89%), morphospecies were a perfect match between morphospecies and BINs (including 61 concordant BINs and 22 singleton BINs); (ii) MERGE (14/131 = 10.69%), morphospecies shared its unique BIN with other species; (iii) SPLIT (33/131 = 25.19%, when 22 singleton species were excluded, it rose to 33/109 = 30.28%), morphospecies were placed in more than one BIN; (iv) MIXTURE (4/131 = 5.34%), morphospecies showed a more complex partition involving both a merge and a split. Neighbor-joining (NJ) analyses showed that nearly all BINs and most morphospecies formed monophyletic cluster with little variation.

Introduction and Background on Proposed Action This biological assessment (BA) has been prepared by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) to evaluate the potential effects on federally-listed threatened and endangered species and designated critical habitat from the movement of baled garbage and regulated (domestic) garbage (GRG) from the State of Hawaii for disposal at landfills in Oregon, Idaho, and Washington. Specifically, garbage is defined as urban (commercial and residential) solid waste from municipalities in Hawaii, excluding incinerator ash and collections of agricultural waste and yard waste. Regulated (domestic) garbage refers to articles generated in Hawaii that are restricted from movement to the continental United States under various quarantine regulations established to prevent the spread of plant pests (including insects, disease, and weeds) into areas where the pests are not prevalent.

ZooKeys 773: 57–67. https://doi.org/10.3897/zookeys.773.24156 Abstract Xizicus Gorochov, 1993, the quiet-calling katydid, is a diverse genus with 68 species in world, which includes more than 45 species in China, has undergone numerous taxonomic revisions with contradicting conclusions. In this study the complete mitochondrial genome of Xizicus (Haploxizicus) maculatus col- lected from Hainan for the first time was sequenced using the Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS) tech- nology. The length of whole mitogenome is 16,358 bp and contains the typical gene arrangement, base composition, and codon usage found in other related species.

E-mail: 1 [email protected]; 2rambo/[email protected] Abstract In this paper, one new genus, three new species are described: Alloxiphidiopsis gen. n., Alloxiphidiopsis cyclolamina sp. n., Alloxiphidiopsis /ongicauda sp. n. and Alloxiphidiopsis ova/is sp. n. (Meconematini). Two new combinations are pro posed: Alloxiphidiopsis emarginata (Tinkham, 1944) comb. n. and Alloxiphidiopsis irregularis (Bey-Bienko, 1962) comb. n. from Xiphidiopsis. A key to the species is given. Key words: Taxonomy, Meconematini, A/loxiphidiopsis, new species Introduction Meconematini is the largest tribe in Meconematinae, which was proposed by Burmeister (1838). 31 genera are presently recognised in this tribe, most of which are distributed in Asia. During the course of a revision of Chinese Meconematini, we discovered that the males of Xiphidiopsis emarginata Tinkham, Xiphidiopsis irregularis Bey-Bienko and three new species have highly modified 9th abdominal tergites, and the females of two species (the others are unknown) have denticulated ovipositors. These characters differ clearly from the other genera of Meconematini. Thus we think it is wiser to treat them as a single genus for the time being. The type specimens are deposited respectively in Shanghai Entomological Museum, Chinese Academy of Sci ences (SEM); Institute of Zoology, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IZCAS); Nankai University, Tianjing (NUT) and Bishop Museum, Hawaii (BMH). • Biodiversity of Freshwater and Estuarine Communities in Lower Pearl Harbor, Oahu, Hawaii with Observations on Introduced Species
BIODIVERSITY OF FRESHWATER AND ESTUARINE COMMUNITIES IN LOWER PEARL HARBOR, OAHU, HAWAII WITH OBSERVATIONS ON INTRODUCED SPECIES February 2000 Department of Defense Legacy Project Number 106 Cover From upper left: Photograph taken in 1999 of Waimalu Stream mouth lined with mangroves (Rhizophora mangle) as it enters Pearl Harbor. Upper right photograph: taken prior to the introduction of mangroves in 1911 at Kukona fishpond, Waiau, Pearl Harbor (J.F.G. Stokes photograph, CP 3763, Bishop Museum Archives). Plants shown in the 1911 Stokes photograph include a native great bulrush, Schoenoplectus (Scirpus) lacustris subsp. validus, coconut trees (Cocos nucifera), and pickleweed (Batis maritima) in the lower left corner. The native great bulrush community has now been eliminated in Pearl Harbor by mangroves. Lower left photograph: taken in 1930 at Loko Eo fishpond in the Waipio Peninsula of Pearl Harbor (J. Gilbert McAllister photograph, CN 15355, Bishop Museum Archives). The only identifiable plant growing along the fishpond walls in the 1930 McAllister photograph is pickleweed in the bottom foreground area. The Loko Eo fishpond was filled and now is the site of the present-day Ted Makalena golf course. Lower right photograph: Blaisdell Park area in 1999 near the mouth of Waimalu Stream; mangroves on the right side of photograph encroaching on pickleweed.
